FIFA best XI has no EPL(best league in the world?) players in it- Goalkeeper: Iker CasillasDefenders: Dani Alves, Gerard Pique, Sergio Ramos, MarceloMidfielders: Xabi Alonso, Xavi Hernandez, Andres IniestaForwards: Lionel Messi, Radomel Falcao, Cristiano Ronaldo
Marcelo you could take issue with. Alves too, I think.
Agreed and even with Alonso a little
I don't know if the EPL's better than La Liga. Has that been quantified anywhere?
Depends on what you would look at I guess. The top of La Liga has done better than the EPL, but the EPL might be a deeper league.

I'm not going to aruge that the exclusion of an EPL player is wrong. But it does seem kind of silly that the ENTIRE Best XI is from La Liga.

The Bundesliga, EPL, and La Liga all get the same number of CL spots (3 + 1 play-in), so they're all considered fairly close to each other. Italy has 2+1.
Then one step further shows that the EPL doesn't do as well as La Liga in teh CL coefficient, iirc.

I think people forget that RM hasn't even been in a CL final for over a decade. Barca is the dominant team, but the EPL is much deeper (3 different CL winners and 4 different finalists over the last decade).

Current UEFA coefficients have La Liga at 84, EPL at 77.6, and Bundesliga at 75. Bundesliga and La Liga look roughly tied for first in 12-13.

I had a longer response typed up in regard to CL, but interestingly enough, in the past 10 years, the EPL has had 3 winners, and 4 runner ups with 4 different teams being represented (ManU, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal)

Serie A has also had 3 winners and I think 2 or 3 runners up, with 3 teams represented (Milan, Inter, and Juventus)

La Liga has had Barcelona winning 3 times, and no runner ups

Bundesliga has had BM with 2 runner ups, nothing else

The last winner was from Portugal, and France also had a runner up - Monaco

fwiw

In my eyes, from top to bottom, EPL is the best, with Serie A in second. La Liga and Bundesliga close enough for third.

But, the best club in the world is in La Liga, and La Liga also probably boasts the most top end talent in the world.

It's just really too hard to judge between leagues, as styles of play are different. I just think Spurs/Everton type clubs in the EPL would challenge for 2nd - 3rd spots in other leagues, and I have a hard time believing Malaga and Real Betis would be a top half team in the EPL. That's just me though.

It's hard to argue with the CL coefficient as the best indicator of top-to-bottom league strength.

I just did :shrug:I don't know what formulas it uses, but obviously the top end of La Liga is very high. I mean Barca and RM would surely be rated higher than any team in the EPL, and the way Atletico has played of late, they'd be right near the top too.But I think the next 10-12 teams if comparing the two leagues would all come from the EPL.And then obviously both teams have bottom feaders. So, do you want the team with the best of the best, or 11 of the top 15. Kind of like the stars and scrubs theory in fantasy baseball I guess.Again, just the way I see it. (which is biased and usually wrong, but at least I'll admit that part)

I'm not sure that the scrub teams matter when selecting a World Best XI, though. It's not as if anyone was selected from Mallorca or Deportivo.

The UEFA coefficient weights Europa League games just as heavily as CL games. So when English teams blow that tournament off, it hurts the league's ranking. And when Atletico wins the EL, it helps La Liga as much as when Barca wins the CL.

And mathematically, the coefficient isn't very good. In college basketball terms, it's more RPI than KenPom... it's based on a somewhat random assignment of point values for events rather than any empirical research.

I don't buy that excuse about EPL teams not trying to win in that tournament. It didn't seem like Stoke, ManU, or ManCity were blowing off the Europa League last year when they were knocked out by Spanish and Portugeuse teams. They lost with most of their starting lineups intact.

Stoke was definitely fielding their best teams and trying their hardest. Pulis went out publicly and stated that getting results in Europa League play were extremely important to the club. And while I don't necessarily think United or City were blowing off Europa League play, they were certainly in the midst of a heated premier league race, so it's hard to calculate just what was going through players minds - but yes, both clubs put out strong lineups. However, almost every other club has put out their b team, and Liverpool has put out their youth teams out there ffs.Spurs has routinely rested starters in away matches, only strong side they've fielded was @ Lazio, and Newcastle too has never played with a full lineup.Weighting Europa League play with the most important club tournament in the world is not exactly level.

Yeah, I get that it varies. I would just think examples like Atletico's dominance of the tournament in recent yerasor Athletic's nice run last year would make people re-think the assumption that teams in La Liga outside of Barca and Real couldn't make the top half of the EPL.

There's not much else that UEFA can use to rank leagues. There aren't enough meaningful interleague games to go on. The Europa league pool goes deeper, particularly for minnow countries. Everybody knows the rules going in and it's not like UEFA coefficients are all that important. Besides, it's good for Cyprus to outrank the Netherlands in something related to soccer.

Lionel Messi was honored as FIFA’s world player of the year Monday for a record fourth year in a row. Messi, the 25-year-old Barcelona and Argentina star, received more than 41 percent of the vote, beating his rival Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid, who was second at 23.6 percent, and two of his Barcelona teammates, midfielders Andres Iniesta and Xavi...

The vote was a signal of how dominant Spanish soccer, and especially its two cornerstone clubs, have become in the world game. The top six finishers all play in Spain, including three from Barcelona (Messi, Iniesta and Xavi) and two from Real Madrid (Ronaldo and goalkeeper Iker Casillas). Only the Colombian Radamel Falcao, a star striker for Atletico Madrid, broke their stranglehold; he finished fifth

New Toronto FC president Kevin Payne appears set to shake things up a bit more at BMO Field.According to a Soccer By Ives report on Monday, Payne has relieved current head coach Paul Mariner of his duties, and is set to name former D.C. United defender Ryan Nelsen as Mariner's replacement. This comes just hours after the news that technical manager Bob de Klerk has also been let go.TFC did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MLSsoccer.com on Monday, but did send out a media advisory that the club will be making a "major announcement" at BMO Field on Tuesday. Nelsen, a New Zealand international, spent five seasons with D.C., winning an MLS Cup title in 2004. He then moved on to a long and productive career in England, primarily with Blackburn Rovers. He also captained the All-Whites at the 2010 World Cup, in which they were the only squad to finish the tournament unbeaten. The 35-year-old Nelsen is currently on the books at Queens Park Rangers, but is not expected to feature as a player/coach for TFC, according to the report.

This is pretty fun. The players had the wackiest votes, IMO.http://estaticos.marca.com/deporte/balondeoro/2012/votaciones-2012.pdf
Messi voted for Iniesta, Xavi, and Aguero. Portugal Captain Bruno Alves doesn't vote for Messi at all. Klinsmann with a 2nd place vote for Pirlo.Spain coach no votes for Messi.German coach: Ozil :lmao: , Nuer, Xavi

I learned that Luis Suarez is also the coach for Honduras. And he didn't even vote for himself. So selfless.

When C Ronaldo talks like this I just think he is an idiot but when Zlatan says it I just crack up. :) "Today at training journalists even started talking to me on the field, which is not normal. They shouldn't be allowed. I think France is not used to having someone in their country who is of my level." -- Paris Saint-Germain's Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic. (Guardian)

When I'm hired to run my own soccer channel, my first act is to get Zlatan and Cantona to host a show together. Sure fire hit. If I'm lucky, they might even Kung Fu fight each other.

I think partly it's because it sometimes seems like Ibra is actually in on the joke -- that he's winking and having fun while he's acting like an insufferable star. Whereas Ronaldo is just 100% insufferable.

And people were worried that Brazil was not going to be prepared for WC2014 in time. I am sure the FIFA officials demanded this be ready.

Brazil prostitutes plan English classesJanuary 8, 2013By Associated PressSAO PAULO -- Prostitutes in one of Brazil's biggest cities are beginning to sign up for free English classes ahead of this year's Confederations Cup and the 2014 World Cup.The president of the Association of Prostitutes of the city of Belo Horizonte says by telephone that 20 have already signed up for the courses and she expects at least 300 of the group's 4,000 members to follow suit. So much for all of those Portuguese classes I took. :kicksrock:

USMNT U20 Marc Pelosi starting at left mid for Liverpool in their U21 NextGen Series game against Inter Milan.ETA- he ended up sitting just in front of Coady in the middle. Pushing up once in a while but mainly holding the mid. rink- http://nutjob.eu/njtvx3.htmlOf course by the time I find it it's halftime. From the comments, Pelosi has had a really good first half.THis is the gist of his play today-

I thought Pelosi was awesome tonight. Composed on the ball, always choosing the right ball and mopping up when needed. First rate.

Why are some of the names in the format last, first and then some are first, last?

Zlatan is a real life Ben Stiller character.

I'd love to see their phrase books.
