watching the espn and eurosport play by plays... can someone describe why RVP gets a yellow but Ramos gets not even a foul? correct calls?

Van Persie elbowed/swung his arm in Ramos' neck/chin area. Usual theatrics by Ramos.
thankswhat about ramos elbowing evans and no call?
He made it look inadvertent, but it should've merited at least a yellow.Interesting stat from the Guardian MBM: Real hasn't scored from a corner all year. And if not for set-piece goals, Real would've only dropped 8 points this year instead of 18.

Missed it when I went to get a drink, sorry.
no worries... espn and eurosport's commentary full of snarky remarks so was wondering if the calls were correct or if the hometown calls gave rvp a yellow and ramos nothing.

Can I still make fun of Jmon for (presumably) being a Barca fan only because Kobe is a Barca fan.I mean, that's kind of a special case, right?
I agree you get an exemption for Jmon, but I otherwise bristle a bit at accusations of front running. With a few exceptions, I don't think any of us were born into our clubs. I completely support all efforts to mock and brutalize each other's respective teams, and generally think this thread is overly tame in that regard (but we've got other boards for that). I'm not really sure what it means to "choose" a club to follow. I couldn't just change my mind one day and decide I like some other big club.
I don't really understand why anyone feels the need to talk trash much at all. Certainly not to the extent found on most soccer boards. I'm glad there isn't too much of it that going on here, relatively.

United fan since 1992 when I saw them, Arsenal and Leeds play in Norway. Didnt know the history of any of them, and this was the start of United's run. They were just so much more fun to watch then the other teams....

I'm watching the Dutch broadcast. Announcer was surprised he swung his arm in such obvious fashion, thought it was a dumb play by Van Persie, which agree with. Especially this early in the game.

Whose the American dude doing play-by-play on FSC? Hes actually not terrible!BTW absolutelty incredible atmosphere at the Bernabeu. Its buzzing.

is that gus johnson?
Yes. He has improved quite a bit from last seasons MLS games.
Guys, hes one of the better US play-by-play guys Ive heard. Really enjoying his call. Great energy as you would expect from him but not too chatty. Also lets the atmosphere soak in. On the down side, hes doesnt overwhelm with his knowledge of the sport, tactics, etc. But to be fair though, the color commentary guy chimes in with strategy, tactics, etc.I like it

Just curious - what dont you like? Also, are you talking about for soccer, or in general?

Color guy is Warren Barton, right? I'm not sure I've heard him call a game either.
Yes. They are making a great pair. It would be near impossible to tell that this was Johnson's very first call for tv. If he continues to take this seriously (and assuming Fox keeps and or/gets some additional soccer properties), he is going to be solid for WC2018.

He yells any time anything happens. No nuance to his play-by-play whatsoever.

FSC announcers generally sound like they are trying to lull me to sleep, some excitement isn't too bad.
Agreed. Anyone who has ever listened to any Spanish announcers would think Johnson is on downers with how calm he is. I find him a nice happy medium between the "never take a breath" Spanish announcers and the "wow this sport looks boring" British announcers.

54'Oooh controversy. Evra, of all people, bursts through the middle and Varane brings him down but the referee waves play on. Fergie apoplectic. That was a foul and a red card. Big, big call.wtf??

Really interesting article. One of the things working against him is his lack of history with the sport. Even if he gets the tactics/strategy down, he'll have to learn up on the history of the sport, the big games (which he has no recolletion of), etc. He can obviously read about it, but not having been through it will put him at a disadvantage.Fascinating the read about all the things hes been doing to prep for this.

The refs been letting a lot of pushing and shoving go. But on that one the RM player grabbed Evra's jersey. It was a certain foul and he was the last defender.

thanks, hate to see a red change the game, but if its the right call it has to be made.

You can get away with a lot of physical play in the Bernabeu, particularly as the home team.

It was no worse really than Jones foul in the box that should have been a pk. The ref has been consistent.

First half. Full arm extended push clearing out DiMaria. http://forums.footballguys.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=305522&view=findpost&p=15308866

ahh i see it now. thanks41'Furious pace to the game now - Jones shoves Di Maria down off the ball in the area but no penalty given, then RVP squanders possession again. United wobbling.

Wow. How did RVP not get more wood on the second chance? Not sure there are many other left foots in the world you want on the ball there with keeper dead to rights.

The "fouls" might have been similar but the situations weren't. Evra was going to be behind the defense.
