I always get jacked up for these draws, no idea why. It would be no different to just read about it later this afternoon, or really any time over the next couple weeks. I'm losing focus here at my desk and its still over an hour away. Napoli in pot 4 seems to be the crucial draw IMO.

Reports that Ronaldo will not even attend the uefa poy ceremony, his excuse being a RM friendly at Deportivo La Coruna. With only three finalists, that seems like quite a snub.

NBC getting the shaft a bit in early EPL action.

Last Saturday's games were all    After the Arsenal/Fulham early game there were 7 total goals in 6 league games, and quite frankly none of them were even close to compelling. In 6 Bundesliga games there were 20 goals....hell there were more red cards (8) than goals in England over that stretch.

And this Saturday is shaping up not to be a whole lot better.

City/Hull (one sided affair early game)

Cardiff/Everton

Newcastle/Fulham

Norwich/S'hampton

WHU/Stoke

Palace/Sunderland (at least Jozy may feature on a national stage)

Thank God for Sunday though....Liverpool/United and Arsenal/Spurs are two very big games before the break.
Did you think City/Cardiff was going to be a one-sided affair?

I think pots 2 and 3 will really determine the group of death. Seems to me if one group gets one of PSG and Juventus AND one of Dortmund or Man City, then that's a nightmare group for whatever pot 1 team is seeded. Napoli out of pot 4 would just be the icing on the cake.

Bring on Man City! :boxing:

I boldly predict a thumping by Hull City (meaning a 0-0 draw).

Q: how many matches over the course of the year would you consider compelling? There's 38 rounds of games so the top mattch-ups can only be spread so much.

Capital One Cup Question: Do teams field their best lineups for this, or do they send out the b-team or something like that?

I don't get jacked up about it, but I enjoy the draws. I actually prefer the discussions about it afterwards even moreso as there is always a lot of interesting matchups coming up down the road. Tons of teams in pot 3 and 4 that can cause trouble this year.

Well, since you and Scooby both seem to ignore the fact I was detailing Saturday games only....

I gave Cardiff a punchers chance against City. They were at home, and if you read my thorough and awesome Premier League preview, you would see I had tipped them to stay up.

City is now the wounded bird, at home, against what I feel to be the weakest premier side. This game will be an absolute horror show. I cannot recall a time I have not woke up early to watch the early game on Saturday and/or Sunday, but there is no need to waste my time watching this one.

Capital One Cup Question: Do teams field their best lineups for this, or do they send out the b-team or something like that?
Depends.

Most teams send in their B sides, but some clubs take these games a bit more seriously. Aston Villa started a very strong lineup yesterday. Liverpool also fielded a stronger than expected side, and it will come up to bite them in the ###, so that's why most teams put b-teams out there. Liverpool suffered a number of knocks/injuries and had to have a few players run a full 120 minutes.

It is still early in the season, and there is a 2-week break coming up, but come mid season there are all kinds of interesting lineups through out in Capital One cup play. FA Cup may get a bit stronger consideration.

That's true. For the three English teams in pot 1, Schalke would be a great draw from pot2 because you've avoided PSG and Juve while eliminating Dortmund from contention, so pot 3 looks better without them or City in the mix.

The biggest challenge for Barça this year will be integrating Neymar without alienating Pedro or Alexis. Oh and relying on Mascherano and Pique for their CBs. Those two will get exploited by top attacking teams.
Why are they still doing this? There has to be dozens of defenders out there that they could afford that would be better than Mascherano.

I'm gonna be in Munich later this month. I'm definitely going to see a match, unfortunately Bayern won't be in town while I'm there though. Closest options are Dortmund @ Nuremberg or Frankfurt @ Stuttgart. Any thoughts on which would be better? Anyone been to either of those stadiums? Leaning towards Dortmund @ Nuremberg, I think that'd be a fun city to spend a day in plus Dortmund are obviously the best side of the four.

Good for Chelsea getting Schalke.

RIP arsenal
It's not as Deathly as previous Groups of Death. If you consider Dortmund the clear favorite, I'd still put Arsenal as a narrow favorite over Arsenal er, Napoli for the second spot with OM really being just spoilers, IMO.

At the very least, the potential is there for some tasty football. I'm looking forward to it.

I actually think United's draw is tricky. Nobody wants to travel to the Ukraine. A hot striker like Kießling is never fun to face, and Sociedad is a team on the rise. United should get through, but I doubt it will be a cakewalk.

Shaktar been picked apart this offseason, not too worried about them. Still have Adriano and Srna, so always a danger, but Paulinho, Mkhityarin gone, both key players.

If United can't beat Real Sociedad they are in trouble big time anyway. Bayern Leverskeun bout the 4th or 5th best team in Bundesliga, may be a tricky away fixture but even so, United should advance without big trouble.

Of course I said that two years back and they lose at home to Bilbao and Basel knock them out at OT too

Probably for the best, although I'd have loved to have seen his expression when Ribery won. I mean, cmon. I'm totally fine with a Bayern player winning it, but don't give it to a worse player at the same position. Give it Lahm or Neuer or even Schweiny.

Eephus and his ongoing Dons love made me look up the '88 FA Cup Final just now. Only 25 years ago, but it reads like ancient history.

--The bench was only three deep

--Teams only got two subs

--The entire game replayed in event of tie on 120 minutes

--And the starters for the two teams combined featured...

13 English

3 Scots

3 Irish

2 Welsh

1 Zimbabwe (Grobbelaar)
