How many of the regulars in this thread still pay attention to college or nfl football?
Never really have followed college. Check in on the results, root for a team outside the SEC to win it all. Work with some diehard USC, Oklahoma and Texas fans but don't follow a team myself (no team at my college).

NFL watch as many games as possible. Perfect Sunday is United from 7-9 then 3 games of NFL with SD being one of them.

Kind of surprised nobody's come in for James Ward-Prowse for that matter. I think he's a real talent.

I normally don't get too exorcised about bigger clubs poaching a club's talent, but this is very sad. There's no way Soton can intelligently replace these players, even with the money coming in. They just don't have time.
Not sure what they're doing...they're getting great money for these guys. 12-16M for Chambers?? Doubled their money on McLovren, did well with Lallana. They aren't giving guys away, they just need to buy
Have to wonder if the heiress is just cashing out...
I don't know what Southampton's financials look like, but they have one of the best youth systems in the country. Pretty amazing the amount of English talent they pump out of there. As long as they can supplement their first team with veterans they should chug along for quite some time. No reason to cash out on that money train.

Everyone thought they were solid because of how Liebherr had structured things. Then after the season they were saying they would need to sell a couple of players to balance the books, blaming Cortese for overspending. Then they sale everyone. So, I don't think anyone really knows right now.

It hasn't exactly been a fire sale although the end result is similar. They've been selling their good players to top teams. It's hard to keep your talent happy when United, Arsenal and Liverpool come a calling.

The next 34 days at St. Mary's will be fascinating.

What really seems to have sold Arsenal on Chambers is his versatility. He really didn't play right back for the youth team or reserves. He was a CM. And many project him as a CB. I think Arsene sees him as his own Phil Jones. So while he certainly isn't as good a RB yet as Davies or Debuchy, he can play there, or as a more dedicated holding mid or even as an emergency CB the way that Sagna did. Every team needs a good utility infielder.

Its almost exactly 5 years ago that the Liebherr family bought Southampton out of administration for between £13m and £15m. The club will likely make at least £60-70m in television money alone this season. With other commercial revenue + player sales, gross revenue will likely exceed £200m this year alone. On the one hand, what a tremendous investment. On the other, its got to be hard on the fans. Nonetheless, its very hard to criticize an owner for accepting the crazy money the club is getting for these players.

But even in the financial sense, they're obviously taking a chance with relegation. They probably need to get unlucky to get sent down, but it's not impossible.

Catching up from my Pittsburgh weekend because I hate posting on mobile. 34.000 at Heinz for the game, broke the old record of 10 years ago by nine thousand. Milan appeared to be playing 14-year-olds on defense who were abused by Jovetic, Iheanacho and especially Navas. Only Sully Muntari played well for them, Honda was ineffectual. Balotelli played the second half, which was pretty exciting for all and funny when the two bozos ran out onto the field to get a selfie with him. 20-minute lightening delay the only downer. We had lunch and beer in the Strip District and took the subway over to the stadium for an easy walk to our seats. Good time, need to catch some local action now.

This Southampton thing is killing me. Now Rodriguez and Schneiderlin? Gracious, those second rate Dutchmen they're buying with the cash won't come close to replacing all those guys.

FTR, no tackle football for me this year again, thank you.

Yeah, but its just this year that the daughter assumed control of the club isn't it? First got rid of Cortese, now selling off every asset they can.

Just read a "behind the scenes" post from an alleged Soton ITK - essentially said that morale has been going down hill since Cortese left. Thinks the club has been for sale, but did not generate the asking price Liebherr wanted, so she is selling assets to meet the lower evaluations. Does not think they are done selling, but I don't really know what else they have to sell.

Obviously not a true fire sale, because they are getting premium prices, but to just gut a young team like that is a bit sad, and apparently no intention of fully re-investing the funds into the team.

Gator, any plans for Liverpool to sign another striker since the Remy deal fell through? What do you think about a Sturridge/Sterling/Lambert striker combination? Good enough?

I'm no Gator, but Lambert is like Andy Carrol without the skills. So that should go well.

Ain't gonna happen

For those that care, Andy Carroll has 29 EPL goals in 124 appearances. Rickie Lambert has 28 EPL goals in 75 appearances. If we just take the time since Lambert has been in the EPL, Carroll has 9 goals in 39 appearances.

Both Carroll and Lambert had one year in the Championship. Both did well, but Lambert did significantly better. Carroll had 17 goals in 39 appearances. Lambert had 27 goals in 42 appearances.

I suppose its true that Lambert doesn't have as much skill as Carroll if you believe that the ability to avoid injuries and to score goals isn't tied to skill. I believe otherwise.

They'll look for another striker or winger, maybe get back into the Shaqiri mix. That Remy deal would have been perfect...proven PL scoring forward, in his prime for that price? :wall:

I'm a big fan of the Lambert signing at 4M. He provides depth, leadership and will run his nuts of for his boyhood club.

My guess is they'll bring in two more players at the most; striker/winger and a LB or RB.

What's up with Osvaldo? I know he's disgruntled and not likely back, but I think they still own him and he's probably worth something. They bought a couple attacking players from Holland. 50 million pounds for two 19 year old full backs seems pretty damned astute, but we'll see. The first game is just under three weeks away, but I think the window is open until the end of August, so they could still put something decent together.

Last I checked, Inter was ironing out a deal with Soton. He's already agreed to personal terms with Inter. Koeman has also admitted he wouldn't be with Soton this season (this was before his entire team was Raptured on him though).

Here's the projected starting IX for Atleti right now:

--------------------Oblak

-----------Godin---------Miranda

--Juanfran----------------------Siqueira

---------------Gabi----Tiago

--------------------Koke

--------Arda----------------Griezmann

-----------------Mandzukic

That looks pretty nice. Love to see Koke in the middle of the pitch with Gabi and Tiago behind him. Arda + Griezmann are quality wingers. This could morph into a 4-4-2 pretty easily with Griezmann playing withdrawn striker, Koke shifted to the left MF and pulling back flatter with Tiago, Gabi, and Arda.
Oof, going to be another close year. I have always got the sense that AG was more of an attacking winger, do you think he'll be able to track back like Atletico requires?

While leaving Soldier Field yesterday, I had a nice conversation with the Liverpool fan next to me about how we felt sorry for the guy in front of us that had on a Victor Moses jersey. Seriously. I guess they did sell one.

Villa didn't track back that much, but did enough to hound the opposition back four and DM when needed. He'll probably be asked to play like Arda in a much as he needs to establish his positioning first and foremost vs. the central midfield and striker, followed by creating with his feet and making smart passess. Finally hell be asked to tackle and try to disrupt the flow of the opposition's game.

Leave the hard nosed #### to Gabi, Tiago, and Mario.

You should have asked him if his Aly Cissokho jersey was at the cleaners.

Seattle, wait
That got out of hand quickly. The first Galaxy goal was great. The pass to spring Donovan was fantastic. Great match from the Galaxy.
Spacing and shape was perfect from them- they picked up every 2nd ball and seemed to always have a man open. Seattle looked like they were playing a man down all game, only able to counter- and even then just through the middle. LA did a great job containing Yedlin's probes forward and then exploiting the space he left.

Zardoz looks legit. Some solid hold up play from him, even when LA was essentially pumping the ball clear. I forget- citizenship?

eta: LA's spine- in particular their MF, was really dominant. Not sure who the 2 or 3 guys in the middle were for them, but they were the key on both sides of the ball, IMO.

Gyasi Zardes is American. Born in California.

He was signed as homegrown player for LA (I think he was their very first if memory serves).

I forgot to mention something I saw in the Milan-City game Sunday. After the last City score, Balotelli took a shot right from the ensuing kickoff in the center circle. I told my friend I'd never seen somebody try that before but then yesterday ESPNFC's weekend top goals featured a guy from Liga MX, I think, actually scoring on it, a 55-yard screamer into the corner. Is that something a player will try every once in a while?

I think this is the one ESPN showed. Balotelli's shot was more like this one.

If Schneiderlin and Rodriguez join Spurs as rumored, Southampton will only have four players left from their 2013 opening XI (Boruc, Fonte, Wanyama, Ward-Prowse).
