People seem to overlook the fact that United won two of the last 4 titles, losing out on a 3rd on goal diff. With pretty much this team. They had a really bad season but now they have a better manager then last year that will bring some dynamic play to the side. They do need some defensive help and possible another cm. so I do not see a 1st place finish but I like what I have seen so far.

Chelsea/City

United/Arsenal

Liverpool

Tottenham/Everton
Ditto.

But I think I'd put Spurs and Pool together and drop Everton by themselves.

Soccer books... this might get swallowed up by transfer talk and title predicitons but what good soccer books can you recommned?

I know Inverting the Pyramid is popular from a tactics side. I just finished George Vescey's book 8 World Cups. Overall it is great history lesson of the last 8 world cups, covering key players, games and even getting into FIFA scandals but it was a little dry.

Any recommendations?
Looking for just reading material or more along the lines of Inverting the Pyramid?
There was a bunch of great recommendations for both topics earlier in the thread, I think when BobbyLayne asked the same question. I'll try to find them...

For general non historical/non analytical reading material, my favorite soccer book of all time was The Miracle of Castel Di Sangro. Great read. Here is a synopsis

Master storyteller Joe McGinniss travels to Italy to cover the unlikely success of a ragtag minor league soccer team--and delivers a brilliant and utterly unforgettable story of life in an off-the-beaten-track Italian village.

When Joe McGinniss sets out for the remote Italian village of Castel di Sangro one summer, he merely intends to spend a season with the village's soccer team, which only weeks before had, miraculously, reached the second-highest-ranking professional league in the land. But soon he finds himself embroiled with an absurd yet irresistible cast of characters, including the team's owner, described by the New York Times as "straight out of a Mario Puzo novel," and coach Osvaldo Jaconi, whose only English word is the one he uses to describe himself: "bulldozer."

As the riotous, edge-of-your-seat season unfolds, McGinniss develops a deepening bond with the team, their village and its people, and their country. Traveling with the miracle team, from the isolated mountain region where Castel di Sangro is located to gritty towns as well as grand cities, McGinniss introduces us to an Italy that no tourist guidebook has ever described, and comes away with a "sad, funny, desolating, and inspiring story--everything, in fact, a story should be" (Los Angeles Times).

charvik/El Floppo/Mjolnirs/T Bell et al (aka friends of BL, but I'll take advice from anyone)

I have a 15 year old who is a total soccer nut. As in scouring the internet during World Cup qualification to find steaming games of the CAF (he can't find Burkina on a map but knows they almost took out Algeria).

Dad, on the other hand...

I'd really like to teach myself more about the beautiful game as a means of connecting more with him. I also happen to like futbol a lot, but my base knowledge is lacking.

Where do I start? If you could recommend 3-5 books and a couple websites I would appreciate it.
A good book on the history of soccer tactics, which also has insight into soccer's expansion outward from England into various world regions and those regions'/cultures' various "takes" on soccer tactics, is called Inverting the Pyramid. This would be a good read, though it assumes a basic level of soccer knowledge so it might have some terminology that would be challenging for you. Still, I'd recommend it.

If you like video games, you can actually learn a lot about tactics from playing Football Manager or even FIFA and "gamify" your learning experience.
This thread and Wiki are a good start.

this book actually gives a little bit of a different read than most imo - http://www.amazon.com/Soccer-IQ-Things-Smart-Players/dp/1469982471/ref=zg_bs_16638_2

ETA> FIFA World Cup 14 comes out Tuesday. Pick that up for you and him
The Ball is Round is another good "beginners" book.
In this extraordinary tour de force of a book, David Goldblatt describes the rise of football, from a chaotic folk ritual to a sector of the global-entertainment industry. It's the story of players and managers, fans and owners, clubs and national teams; a chronicle of who won and who lost. But it's also a history of states and markets, money and power. And, above all, how all these forces interact. It is a history which attempts to locate where the line between the realm of glory and the realm of power has been crossed, that celebrates the love of the game, but knows that it can be bought. Thus the book describes and accounts for the careers of Pele and Maradona, Puskas and George Best; the histories of the Wunderteam and the incomparable Hungarians, the anti-futbol of Estudiantes de la Plata and the futbol arte of Brazil 1970. It explores the cultural meanings and political uses of football in Peron's Argentina, Adenauer's West Germany, Stalin's Soviet Union and Mussolini's Italy. It ranges from the postcolonial politics of African football to the manufacturing history of the football boot; from the history of stadium architecture to the architecture of power in global football's leading institutions.
I'm obviously a "little" biased but 44 Years With The Same Bird is another great book.

It's a passionate view from a fan (also a journalist) that describes his love affair with the game and how it affects his entire life, his relationship with his parents, and his son. Even if you are not a fan of Liverpool, this book gives a good view of the passion involved.

"Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very

disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more

important than that."

The Arsenal parallel to that is Fever Pitch, also written by a writer (author of High Fidelity and About a Boy).
I read The Miracle of Castel di Sangro: A Tale of Passion and Folly in the Heart of Italy during a long flight right after it came out. Nice read, again on the passion for the game (this time in Italy).

:hifive: What makes this book fun is that it reads like fiction. God bless my crazy paisans :)

This sounds like last season when a lot on here predicted they'd be out of the top four.... ;)
True, and with a manager up to the task they shouldnt have ended out of the top 4. Then the believers saw what Moyes can do and, well, you see what happened. But LVG is a top coach and will get the lads going properly. We shouldnt see an 80 cross game again!

Can someone post the most updated "FBG team directory"? About that time of year to bump that post - no idea how to search for it

I recalled a few tweets Robin Williams had during the World Cup - I Believe a That we will win stuff - but had forgotten about his role in the '94 draw. From Roger Bennets Dec 2013 article:

Fittingly for such a surreal occasion, it was Robin Williams who stole the spotlight. First, the comedian described the draw bracket as "the world's biggest keno game" and then proceeded to refer repeatedly to Sepp Blatter as "Sepp Bladder," even after the then-FIFA general secretary corrected him, insisting, "This is not a comedy!"
