And it's also important to remember that even if United aren't playing with their A-team, their backups should still be able to take care of business against a team like Milton Keynes. There are some no-names in the squad, but there's also De Gea, Evans, Kagawa (before injury), Januzaj, Anderson, Chicharito, and Welbeck. We do bash some of these players plenty in this very thread, but that's still a strong pedigreed lineup....a lineup that should in theory be able to get past Milton Keynes, even though it features mostly backups.

It's not that the early rounds of the cup aren't important, it's that the manager has a balancing act...do I want to play Rooney and RvP on short rest after the weekend's games, potentially jeopardizing them for this upcoming weekend? Or do I want to give Chicharito some playing time and hope that he can get us past a third-tier team, and save Rooney and RvP for the more important league game this weekend?
It's not just that they are losing...plenty of EPL teams lose in these competitions when the other team packs it in and they score on the counter...it's that they aren't controlling the game.

Celtic knocked out of CL by Maribor.

This is probably a good thing. Fox Sports usually shows most of Celtic's group games as if people here care about them. Now they can pick something better.

Michael Cox rather convincingly makes the case that Di Maria will play in a diamond midfield for United. Which seems plausible. Of course, that means getting Rafael healthy or *shudder* starting Smalling as a RB.

So on an epic scale of being a really ####ty team, on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the worst loss imaginable, where would today's potential loss rank for ManU?

Nah, unfortunately no one cares about the league cup. Fantastic for MK and non-United fans but they need to win in the EPL and not here. Completely embarrassing though.
This will be a big deal until ManU can string together a few wins. The fact that it is coming on top of a very lackluster start to the season, just exacerbates the situation.

I posted my 4-2-3-1 that I think he needs to play. Will be interesting to see what he does. The defense is bad either way but at least with 4 at the back it's a bad they know how to play. 3 at the back looks horrific so far.

As one of the CMs or CAM?I like the fact that since Di Maria played centrally as #10 a lot last season fans think he can slot in deeper as a CM.

I'm all for it, get him as far away from goal as possible, please.

so your saying the 3-5-2 is dead?
I'll never give it up, but it's not like it was ever LVG's signature formation. He went to it because he thought the Dutch were crap in CM without Strootman.

With Man U, he can play Mata as the 10 and Di Maria and Herrera as the middle of a narrow diamond. Then his choice of the pu pu platter at CDM. Carrick for passing. Jones for tackling. Fletcher for experience. Not ideal, but doable. I'd probably choose Jones.

Cox describes Di Maria as a "shuttler". He starts in narrow positions but can sprint forward diagonally into wide positions at times.

Hell, maybe this will force them to spend even more. The side should be embarrassed but I still don't think anyone but Eephus cares.

Evil Kagawa likes this.

Like I said above, this isn't losing 1-0 where the MK's packed it in and scored on some random set piece goal against the run of play...EPL don't get embarrassed like this often in any Cup competition, so LVG will take heat until they string some wins together.
