Intentionally didn't follow the transfer closing today. Happy about the Welbeck move, but I suppose I'd have preferred an actual target striker. You know, cause Sanogo kinda sucks.

Radamel Falcao will earn £265,000 per-week at Manchester United, slightly different to the previous £360,000 sum mentioned earlier.
From the Guardian:

"With the striker’s salary of £190,000 a week being paid by United the agreement was set to cost the club at least £16m, with the 20-times champions having an option to buy Falcao next summer from Monaco.

As Falcao’s salary is tax-free at Monaco and United denied they were matching his net take-home of £10m a year, it may be the French club agreed to pay the 50% tax to ensure the striker will suffer no lost earnings. Manchester City and Arsenal, who were also offered Falcao by his agent, Jorge Mendes, were quoted the same numbers before they turned down the deal."

I'm curious, why is Januzaj not thought of higher? He seems to impress more than anyone else on the pitch when I've watched the first 3 weeks.
He's a fantastic talent, but also very young. I expect he will get decent time this season.
What I've seen of him- it's his decision making and tactical awareness that seems immature. Fantastic skills on the ball and good physical ability- just makes the wrong dribbles, runs and passes too much... you can see the reaction on his teammates' faces more often than not when he attacks 3 defenders instead of playing the easy ball, or doesn't make the 2nd run to support the play.

But he's young, right? Still a teen or young 20 guy? Seems like he'll learn that stuff and learn to utilize his fantastic skill-set... in the right setting.
Still 19 and I agree with you - got to learn a team game. Wonderkid at 1-on-1 drills I'm sure but needs to work on crossing and decision making plus strength.
He certainly plays for the right team to get practice on this skillset.

Bigger impact/most goals scored this year: Balotelli or Falcao?
Are you just talking about EPL or total? United is down to two competitions already versus 4 for Liverpool.

Not to state the obvious but I think it will all depend on playing time. If RvP really is injured and will require surgery then Falcao will play virtually every match I imagine. I don't think Balotelli will start as much but his goals per minute could be about the same.

Also, Balotelli won't get PKs when Gerrard is on the pitch - not sure who will take them for United when Falcao is playing. Z, did Falcao take penalties for Atletico?

How did you factor in red cards in your analysis?
As the most important factor?

Srsly, impact goals is a little vague. I think both guys could be in the 10-12ish range. Bolo has the potential to act up, Falcao has had three knee injuries, two major ones. Both have their issues. Torres showed that as a striker, once your first step goes, the goals go with it.

For United it's way less of a risk than it was when he was linked with Liverpool. Liverpool can't spend 20M on a loan, United can.

I know it's a running joke, but in all seriousness, he's only had one red card since the card he got in the EPL in 2012.
I thought one of the tenants of this thread site is we don't let facts get in the way of a joke (even bad ones like mine).

Pretty sure that's too many characters to be a tenant of this site.

(sorry- "tenet")

Balotelli... who the hell knows.

We've all seen him work hard and want to win. And we've all seen him not work hard and not know karate, but know ka-rayzee. First game for Liverpool he was was working his ### off and doing a ton of great stuff for his team off the ball, even though the rust wouldn't let him finish most of that work. Because we all know he has skills and can finish, it's pretty easy to think that he'll be scoring a lot of goals in that offense once he finds his touch AND he keeps working as hard as he did over the weekend. He'll be scoring goals even if he doesn't work that hard. I see anywhere from 10-25.

But of course, he kidnapped a midget to bring to an interview after running covert ops on the interviewer for 3 hours.... so who the hell knows.

Yes, Falcao took penalties while at Atleti. Also, good riddance to Toby. Bad things happened to Atleti with him on the field.
Could you expand on the Toby evaluation for us woeful Saints followers? Does he make them better anywhere in the lineup?
I don't know #### about (the?) Saints. Alls I know is that he was a great step down from Godín and Miranda in defending. He didn't cover the other CB well, and his challenges left something to be desired. Here's a bit from an article: "

A poor showing at right back against Levante in early May played a big part in a 2-0 loss that could have been extremely costly for Diego Simeone’s side. Most notably, the Belgian had a terrible game against Malaga soon after, looking rattled by the occasion (a win would have wrapped the league up for Atleti) and often making poor decisions when trying to win the ball. He made up for his bad display that day by scoring the equaliser with a header, but the previous errors suggested the big stage could affect the 25-year-old."

For real, although he saved Atleti with a crucial goal during the la liga run, If he would have played better against Levante or Málaga, Atlético would have iced the league without needing a result in the final game vs. Barça. I can't forgive him for those errors, so I'm happy to be rid of him.

He simply didn't show well for Atlético although people say he's got talent enough. He can score with his head though, he's quite a bit less proficient than Godín (one of the best CBs in the biz right now) in that respect.

Thanks, Z. I don't remember that guy at all and I watched AM a half dozen times or so last year. I think Koeman is justifiably worried enough about his defense that he thinks anybody is an improvement (over Yoshida!).

GQ recently ranked the sleeziest sports personalities in the world.

Sterling got #1. Aron Hernandez came in number 2 and good old Sepp came in 3rd.

I missed this in the news but I assume this is part of some back room deals concerning the Qatar mess.

Platini announced he will not run against Blatter for the FIFA presidency.

The saga of picking an EPL team continues. I think I might be closing in on Swansea, as they're fun to watch and I wouldn't have any guilt about following them. I just wish they had a more robust fan presence Stateside, as I think being part of a local fan community would help keep my interest. Liverpool was damn entertaining but I don't know, that Red Sox connection might be a dealbreaker for me. As for West Ham, I don't think I've seen a more bitter or angry fan base in sports in recent years (at least the internet faction), and I'm a friggin' Raiders fan.

I watch these decisions with interest and a touch of jealousy.

I have been watching Euro soccer going all the way back to Soccer Made in Germany on PBS in the late 70's. But in all these decades I was never able to support an overseas team like many can. I was never able to form any sort of emotional connection with a team so far away.

I formed temporary bonds with certain teams over the years but that was only due to having US players on the teams and that was more a connection with the player, never really with the team.

And I may end up the same way. As painful as a connection to a sports team made in childhood can be, I've found it to be a bond that's next to impossible to break. I don't know if I, closing in on 40 years old, have it in me to really connect with a new team, especially one across the ocean, but I can't watch sports with no rooting interest.

At least I have the Union close by, so that's an easier leap to make.

Yeah I am the same way. Having Americans on the teams does give a small amount of rooting interest for me but it is always prioritized player first then team.

I was young enough when the Revs started and being so involved in that supporters culture back in mid 90's helped me form that bond.

I wanted to get into the EPL, but I knew I needed a rooting interest. So I found a team that fits the "type" of team I was looking for. For example, I didn't want ManU, the "Yankees" of the EPL. I didn't want boring, defensive teams, or teams that aren't managed well. I also didn't want a team that couldn't realistically compete in the future. (which in the EPL leaves you with 5-6 teams)

I found the team (thanks mostly to help on this forum), immersed myself in learning about them through video games, message boards, and the website, and began watching all their games.

As crazy as it is, I feel like I have a pretty good attachment to Liverpool now. Obviously not at the level anywhere close to fans who live in Liverpool, have been to many games, or fans that have followed the team for many years. But hey, gotta make the plunge sometime!

Swansea has a huge American support vase. Apparently. They had the highest rated games of all the EPL last year. But, I know what you mean. I never see a Swansea fan anywhere ever. I guess the Welsh are mostly homebodies?
