Oh thank god!Am I reading too much into the term "lead" announcer? Does that mean he will still do some games?Looks like the soccer thread won't have Gus Johnson to kick around anymore. He's stepped down as the lead soccer announcer for Fox.
Asked by SI if the external criticism of Johnson’s soccer work impacted his decision, Shanks said no, but added, “I am not going to lie and say we were unaware of it. We make decisions based on how we feel, and in this case, in consultation with Gus.”
Shanks said he still wants Johnson to call some soccer matches and both would not eliminate the possibility of calling some 2018 World Cup games. But Johnson will not be Fox’s lead announcer for the 2018 World Cup, nor will he serve that role at the 2015 Women’s World Cup.
Said Shanks: “All we said at the end of the conversation was he still wanted to do games and I still wanted him to do games. But we did not discuss which games those will be. I would like to see him in some capacity for 2018. But we have to figure what commitment we can make to him as far as getting him reps.”
They still want him to call some games according to the article I read.Oh thank god!Am I reading too much into the term "lead" announcer? With US, MLS and Bundesliga moving to Fox next season, I really don't want him popping up in any telecast.

he was just hitting his stride...
Hopefully he can go back to doing football and basketball. I like him as an announcer, but his schtick just does not work at all for soccer.Ramsay Hunt Experience said:Looks like the soccer thread won't have Gus Johnson to kick around anymore. He's stepped down as the lead soccer announcer for Fox.
ADM was was excellent on the day no doubt, but I thought the "inch-perfect pass" to Mata was most likely a shot on goal. It struck me as a bit funny at the time, since he scored his goal on a cross.Tactical shape change really helped. Blind was everywhere and made a huge difference keeping the team's shape, especially defensively. With the guys going forward that they have (RVP, Rooney, ADM, Mata, etc) it almost doesn't matter what their shape is going forward- those guys will create regardless. But the 4-4-2 just fits so much better with the players out there- and especially with Blind.Considering their recent 4-0 loss to MK Dons, I'm going to go with playing better. Change in formation helped immensely. How much was this QPR sucking vs. United playing better?
Anders Herrera etc also really filled in as a guy moving the ball around in the MF that was lacking for United. And of course, ADM was just electric every time he touched the ball. The perfectly weighted and directed ball he gave to Rooney after sprinting 75 yards was ridiculous- and he was trying to hit Mata for the 20 minutes prior to the inch-perfect pass to set up Mata's goal- one diagonal ball after another that each either just missed or got picked off- but all great vision and decisions, IMO.
But QPR was terrible. Poor shape, poor pressure, and very little by way of ideas or abilities in the attack. It was the perfect team for United to play against- not much pressure up high to threaten their weakness in the back and previously through the middle (although again, BLind really helped) and not enough pressure on those fantastic playmakers up front to force them into mistakes. I think possession was almost 70-30, and it wasn't even as close as that on the field.
And their backers' gullible.I don't think I ever saw positive odds on United finishing top 4, and now they're at -160 or so. Very surprising for me after one good result, given last year's finish and their start this season. The brand is strong.
interYeah, that Milan/Parma game was a real cracker.
Inter Milan kinda loves playing Sassuolo too. Inter put up 7, without a pk. And they had this new guy they got from Dinamo Zagreb I think that's just ####### great.
mebbe a shot, but considering he had been looking for Mata a number of times prior to that play on similar balls/runs, I thought it was a pass- just driven and hit technically the way a shot is... the only way to get it to him on the ground.ADM was was excellent on the day no doubt, but I thought the "inch-perfect pass" to Mata was most likely a shot on goal. It would be like me calling a hockey game (about which I know next to nothing outside of what I've seen watching a handful of games), except I'd just yell periodically when the mood struck.Hopefully he can go back to doing football and basketball. I've said it before but it must be an absolute blast to work in Paddy Power's marketing department.
Chambers was the first choice RB for Soton all last year.Missed all games this weekend except the Arsenal game. Stream of consciousness thoughts.....I thought Welbeck looked good. Sanchez is really starting to thrive offensively. Ozil was completely invisible. I hate zonal marking. Shame that they had all the momentum after the 2 quick goals and couldn't hold on. City looked scary dangerous every time they had the ball on the counter. Wilshere was superb...that's the kinda player Arsenal need him to be. I thought Chambers played admirably in a new position (for Arsenal...did he play side-back at Southampton?). Shame about Debuchy.
That was definitely a part of that, but Silva looked good, and Fernandinho was certainly reveling as he does in his role of destroyer and yet they just couldn't control the middle third. Surprisingly so given the quality of their team overall.Yaya absent, mystery solved.
Not even close as I don't think "first choice" only starts half of the possible games. It was a platoon system and that really only started after Clyne missed a handful of games with an injury.Chambers was the first choice RB for Soton all last year.Missed all games this weekend except the Arsenal game. Well, if he's starting, we know that u21s doesn't stand for under 21 stone amirite?Since I know you ALL are extremely interested - it appears Luke Shaw is starting for United u21's today.![]()

Fair enough - I'd thought he'd started more than that. I do believe he was first choice by the end though. Not even close as I don't think "first choice" only starts half of the possible games. The US Open Cup Final is going to be really interesting. Obviously Philly should be starting a top lineup but I am unsure about what Seattle will do.Domestically, glad to see the Union come back for the point against NY. Really looking forward to the Open Cup final now.

Abel Hernandez scored on his debut first....no - i have Hernandez on my fantasy team - only reason I knew....Did you see either goal? Hernandez was a nice header. Valencia's was an absolute cracker
Would love to but mid-week is tough. I would also assume Philly will put their best feet forward, but they did end up subbing in a few of them (e.g. LeToux) sooner than expected against NY.The US Open Cup Final is going to be really interesting. With LA dropping points this weekend Seattle is really in the drivers seat for the Supporters Shield. So I can't figure out if Seattle will go for the Cup or rest some players to assure the best chance at the Supporters Shield.
Are any of you Philly fans going to the game?
Good game here after a slow start. Hernandez looking like a stealHernandez![]()
