Holy ####storm, Batman!!!

Before I tell you this story, I know that a lot of you in here are fans of MLS. I'm not trying to downplay that for you, nor am I trying to have a repeat of the battle I've fought on the interwebs this morning. But before I tell you the story, let me lay out the facts:

1) I am glad that we have a league in this country

2) I fully agree that it has gotten better

3) I have tried many many many times to watch it, and I just can't get into it because a) I live in Tennessee, and there's no local team for me to get behind, and b) the quality just isn't as good as other leagues around the world. I don't think any of you would disagree with that.

4) Nothing would make me happier than if MLS got on the same level as leagues around the world, and nothing would make me happier than if it became bigger than the NFL or MLB in this country

Having said that, I can't get into it. Would love to, but have been unable to for the above reasons. So, as you know, today was the unveiling of the new logo, which as many of you agree above, looks pretty poor. When the story was posted at NBC Soccer, they asked the question "What do you think of the new logo?" I responded with "About as uninteresting as the league, itself."

You would think that I wiped my ### on the flag and pissed on Miss America. Jeez. I took more abuse their then I do here, and that's saying something..
Imo you deserved the abuse.

What you did was no different than the idiots who constantly posted how much they hated soccer during the WC.

If you don't like the league, that is your opinion and there is nothing wrong with it. More people hold that opinion than do not so you are in the majority.

Feeling the need to denegrate people who might like it is pretty sad and that is exactly what your statement says to me. You are basically saying you are smarter than those people who like MLS, no different than the people who thought they were smarter than soccer fans because they do not like soccer.

Why not just stick to what leagues you like and not put down leagues you don't? It just makes no sense to me why you would have even bothered answering that question when you obviously hate the league. What response did you actually expect when you post something that inflammatory to people who likely watch and enjoy a league?
Not really sure how you got "I'm smarter than you" out of me saying "the league is uninteresting", but whatever floats your boat. Also, didn't denegrate anyone, at all. But, let's not focus on facts, or anything. Inflammatory? Really??? "the league is uninteresting" as a response to "What are your thoughts?" is inflammatory? Maybe you just shouldn't be so touchy about your league? Just a thought.

Magath Out

finally
I wonder if this is going to negatively affect Emerson Hyndman? Magath obviously gave the kids too much rope but I fear the new manager might go in the complete opposite direction.
It's been hard to find info on his performances, but I don't get the impression that Hyndman was being cited as part of the problem. His performances have seemed solid when I've had the opportunity to watch Fulham matches.
I have only read reports but he looks to have been decent overall.

But my comment was more about a philosophy than any one given player.

The new coach might have a mandate to use vets instead of kids and I was wondering if that could affect his playing time since he is one of the many youths Magath gave time too

I was just giving you feedback on why you got so much crap is all.

If you were not interested in why you took the abuse, why did you post the story? I assumed you were wondering why. I did not understand you thought everyone else was wrong and you were right. My bad.

Well, this isn't the PL, so the fact that there's a teenager in the midfield in the Championship isn't quite as shocking. Plenty of blue chip teens from the PL get loaned into starting positions for Championship clubs for example, and Hyndman seems to be approaching that level of quality.

I'm sure the overall youth movement is going to get reevaluated in light of what amounts to their crisis, but even so that might not affect him. I of course hope it doesn't given that I'd love for him to develop well.

I thought the level of poster here was different than the "move to England then, cause 'Merica" poster over there, and I thought someone might enjoy discussing it. You seem to read a lot into what I say. You're not my ex-girlfriend, are you? Is your name Allie, and are you bipolar? This is the exact same type of conversations that we used to have.

Me: "I'm going to the store."

Her: "Why'd you call me a #####?"

Me: "The league is uninteresting. I'm glad it's in this country. I'm glad it's gotten better. I do wish that there was a team close to me that I could get into."

You: "You think you're smarter than everyone. Why do you hate America? Are you in ISIS?"*

yeah he is an important component given his age and his playing time in a decent league.

As we know from the US Nats thread on here, we don't have all that many yanks to follow abroad which is ironic because we have more yanks than ever in Europe, but so few are actually playing.

yeah. that's needed.
Maybe they just need to explain the symbolism in greater depth. A good logo should never stand on it's own without a dissertation of what it represents.

ETA: Oh wait, that's exactly what a good logo should do. My bad.

This is MLS once again trying to be something it's not, namely European. The shield is evocative of coats of arms. You tell me where that's at all relevant.

This is just round two of "Real" Salt Lake and other non-organic nonsense that looks ridiculous to everyone, it's just not as obvious.
This is decidedly the worst part of American soccer.
I don't mind the FC on some of the names (although SC would work as well or maybe better).

I thought both Real Salt Lake and Sporting KC were horrendous.

Of course what do I know seeing as KC is arguably one of the best rebrands in history going from a complete Chivas USA like non entity to wonderfully supported team.

While we are logo bashing, does the US Soccer logo's color scheme bother anyone else? The flag has red and white stripes with stars on a blue field. The logo has blue and white stripes with stars on a red field. WTF?

Also, since this is really the only thread that keeps me coming back to this site, I feel that I should apologize to NewlyRetired and anyone else if I have offended you. There's two basic things that you should know about me. 1) I'm highly highly sarcastic. To the point that I'm borderline caustic when attacked, so if I offend, it wasn't intentional. 2) If I'm posting at night, there is a possibility that I might be a little buzzed. So, you know. Take that as you will. Sometimes if I'm torched, I'll post something that cracks me up, and crickets.

Let's all go around the room and talk about what our greatest fears are. I'll start.

Werewolves.

When they use the open space in the logo, it does not look half bad. I still hate the dangling leg but this mock up of the MLS shield for RSL looks ok to me

still better than blank nothingness :)

I liked QG's suggestion that the Fox Robot will end up there starting next season on the telecasts :)

here is a look at how the US logo has changed over the years

Cool. Thanks.

So basically they are approaching their 20th anniversary of ####### up our flags colors.

MLS is holding a press conference for the new logo.

Someone tweeted that Chivas USA is not showing up on that back drop.
yeah. that's needed.
It's all so forced. The MLS has throughout its history seemed overly aware of how it's newer/lesser/inferior to European leagues and consquently always seems to overcompensate instead of saying, "#### it, let's just make an American soccer league and go and compete." It drives me nuts.

I don't think the bold is accurate.

For the first phase of MLS existence, they were entirely too American imo.

A) non standard rules

B) horrendous team names like Clash, Burn, Metrostars and Wiz

C) uniforms that were clown like

D) playing 90+% of the games in football stadiums

These american ideas nearly saw the league collaspe. Garber immediately changed almost all of them when he became commish. And that is when they started the euro likeness.

But how do you argue with them? Their success has been bigger than anyone could have dreamed 12 years ago when most fans figured they were inches away from going under (which they were).

Like I said above, most people thought the Sporting KC rebrand was going to be a disastor. It has been the exact opposite.

A few pages of MLS talk and I missed it...

I'll say an overall "meh" on the logo. It's a little uninspiring but it doesn't bother me. I felt the same way about a number of recent rebrands (LA, SKC) but they grew on me. I'm sure this will too.

BTW, I never checked in following the USOC Final al PPL. Amazing experience, best live match I've ever been to, and the best crowd vibe at PPL since at least 2011, only 15k but it sounded like 30k, whole stadium was into the chants, which almost never happens. Props to the Sounders traveling support, they brought it too.

Basically it came down to bench depth. Seattle could bring in Martins and Pappa, while the Union countered with...uh, Danny Cruz.

Anyway, the Union had a ton of chances and I'll be reliving Nogueira's shot off the post for a long time. Total Wondo vibe that came true. :kicksrock:

Only one of those is "uniquely American" and I agree that some of the original names somehow managed to be worse than the quasi-Euro names they were replaced with, but that's hardly an endorsement.

They always needed their own stadiums as soccer stadiums have an intimacy about that American football stadiums do not (not to mention less need for a large bench area). It's one thing the English have always seemed to understand, unlike the Italians who have seemed to often go for cavernous stadia with seats away from the pitch. That has happily coincided with a move in that direction generally with American stadia, however, with smaller baseball parks for example rather than those awful multi-purpose stadiums so many teams played in from the 1960's onward.

Anyway, I'm not sure the naming changes you've cited helped the league so much as a lot of people from my generation (~40 years old) who played soccer growing up giving the sport a try as spectators, and that coinciding with ever-lengthening baseball and football games that have simply gotten tedious.

Soccer has a simple, unfettered purity about it as a sport that other major American sports seem to lack.

I never once said the name changes helped the league.

All I mentioned was most said the Sporting KC name was going to be a disastor and it clearly is significantly less important than most of us realized at the time.

I did not get to see the game but every article I read said there were chances after chances galore. I saw Noguerira's shot in the highlights. Were the others bad misses, good saves, a little of both? When did LA rebrand? They have kept the name from day 1 but have gone through some uniform changes. Did they change the logo along the way?

This post screams BG

Looks like QG was not that far off on the white space on the logo. Guess I need to wait this out to see how it is used.

===========================

This white open space acts as a vehicle to frame the great experiences of MLS soccer. This window will bring you in and out of MLS action, providing our broadcasters and other content partners with a very dynamic platform.

It is going to be used for advertisements.

Even more lame imo

Why can't the league have it's own logo without relying on others? Way too gimmicky to leave a "fill in the blank" logo. It's like something that should be handed with a kids menu at Chilis.

B and C were Nike. Just because Nike sucks doesn't mean they needed to do a complete 180 and pretend we're in Europe all of the sudden.

They actually need to look at the A-League to learn how to brand properly for your market.

I agree.

The problem is trying to explain that to the people in charge who have seen every metric they have rise since they made these changes the past decade.

Seeing as how they continue to do this, my guess is that they are unwilling to decouple this copying of Europe with the sucess they have had growing the league and business.

When the story was posted at NBC Soccer, they asked the question "What do you think of the new logo?" I responded with "About as uninteresting as the league, itself."

You would think that I wiped my ### on the flag and pissed on Miss America. Jeez. I took more abuse their then I do here, and that's saying something. Having said that, it was kinda sorta cool, in a weird sort of way, to at least see people fired up about the sport in this country.

:kicksrock:
I did not get to see the game but every article I read said there were chances after chances galore. I saw Noguerira's shot in the highlights. Were the others bad misses, good saves, a little of both? When did LA rebrand? They have kept the name from day 1 but have gone through some uniform changes. Did they change the logo along the way?
The Beckham era logo is much different that what it was previouslyhttp://www.sportslogos.net/logos/list_by_team/331/LA_Galaxy/

I'll start.

Werewolves.
Werewolf.

still have no idea wtf that is.

THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING!!!!!!

Is it too late to get in on this whole MLS thing?

MLS will never be a "top league in the world" with single entity and without pro/rel. It's like the MLS top brass thinks world soccer started in 1996 and they aren't that far behind

Be like Europe

Don't Be Like Europe

Be Like Europe

Don't Be Like Europe

This gets so old. There is no one right answer imo.

If you want to have some fun seeing how violent people can get, go create an account on Big Soccer and repeat your statement. You might get death threats :)

I won't touch it with a ten foot poll but I am pretty certain if MLS had pro/rel and no single entity, they would have been out of business ten years ago since none of the new owners would have invested in something so risky.

...you're trying too hard....Sellout...

I honestly don't think we need relegation/promotion... although it makes it fun for the neutral.

Single-entity, otoh...

It's not the right time for it yet but you can't have a world class league with the bulk of the nation's teams locked into permanent minor league status. We will need viable Rochesters and Nashvilles and Omahas to supplement the powerhouses that can play at a world class level.

we are at earliest 30 years from that happening.

I am not sure people understand just how precarious it is trying to run a lower level soccer team in the US. Teams go out of business constantly. USL Pro is only staying alive due to smartly aligning with MLS to get some funding.

The NASL could easily go out of business in 2-3 years leaving us with no second division.

Most lower level teams play in actual or glorified high school football stadiums.

The infrastructure needed is going to take decades and a ton of public support which we know is not easy. We need almost every lower level team to have a Blackbaud type stadium before any one can even think of promotion relegation imo.

===========================================

Then again none of this matters to me one way or another. We could mimic an England setup identically, as some want, or we could be completely American as others want, but in the end neither are going to see MLS as one of the best leagues in the world. The gap between MLS and the top 6 leagues is too great to close in our lifetimes.

Personally I think the goal should be to be the best league in our region, which would put us more closer to a top 10ish type league but we have a ways to go to catch Liga MX but I feel like that is something that will happen in the near future (with in the next 10 years).
