Thrilled that #fifa has added the 2016 Copa Centenario hosted by U.S. to the international calendar. Look forward to an amazing tournament.
:pickle:

We've been waiting for something like this for so long. I'm going to try to go to all the Nats games if it is doable (not at each end of the country)
This article mentions the dates for the tournament. There is not going to be a lot of time from end of club season to start of this tournament.

=========

[CENTENNIAL CUP AMERICA] FIFA's executive committee approved putting the 2016 edition of the Copa America -- the Centennial Cup America -- on the FIFA international calender. This will allow the 16 national teams to have their players released from their clubs for the tournament that will will run June 3-26in the United States.

“With its addition to the FIFA calendar, the historic Centennial Cup America in 2016 is now set to be the most important full national team tournament hosted in the Americas since this year’s FIFA World Cup,” said Concacaf president Jeffrey Webb in a statement. “We want to thank FIFA, all Confederations and all others involved for their unconditional support in this process, making sure that this once in a lifetime celebration was treated with the respect that the players, football fans around the world and participating countries deserve.”

The tournament marking the 100-year anniversary of the Copa America will consist of 16 teams: the 10 South American teams plus six Concacaf teams.

The six Concacaf teams will consist of the United States and Mexico, both automatic qualifiers, 2014 Copa Centroamericana champion Costa Rica, the 2014 Caribbean Cup champion to be crowned in November and two playoff winners.

The next four highest ranked teams at the 2015 Gold Cup will play off for those final two spots.

Liverpool falling apart? I had then as pegged for fighting for 4th with United, but maybe 6th is a more realistic spot. They only have to climb 6 places to reach that perch.

Atlético took it to Sevilla today. The game wasn't pretty, but it seemed like Sevilla wanted to play like Atlético and get physical and simply weren't up to the task. I'm disappointed in Mandukic not being able to score, but his ability to be a menace for at least one opposition CB opens things up for the rest of the team. Gabi isn't having a great season either IMO, and seems to have fallen off from his masterful performances of last year. Thankfully the team managed to keep both Tiago and Mario Suárez so there's enough central midfield experience to go around.

It's probably no coincidence that the team looks light year better with Simeone on the sideline instead of the press box. Don't get me wrong, they are still looooong shots to repeat as la liga champs, but today was the first time they truly dominated their opponents, imposing their will on the game.

Barça and Real certainly look to be on another level though against all mid-level opponents. Scoring at will and simply punishing any mistake at the back. I can only hope that this season is as nail biting as last season with a three way race for the title. Atlético being nasty certainly helps their chances against teams that want to win "beautifully".

A related question for you guys.

Would you rather:

  • Play the style of game that suits your ideal, i.e. beautiful football, but only come close to the top level of teams
OR

  • Play the game to win, using whatever means (within the rules) to turn the game to your favor. If that means parking the bus or picking up 7 yellows in critical matches, then so be it.
My brother is an Arsenal fan. I'm at Atlético fan. You can see where we might have a disagreement on this topic.

Win the game. Nothing else matters.

Gone all day and just now finishing the matches. Some thoughts:

Pool - Everton - Gerrard just lives to torment Everton - seemed like the script was written for him yet again until......Jags with a screamer. Top strikers would have been happy with that shot - unreal for a CB. I was hoping for a little more "getting stuck in" - maybe Rooney should move back to Everton (foreshadowing).

United - WHU - Deja vu for United as they start strong and look great in attack but look like they could make Sunderland's attack look potent. They are either going to have to get out to 3 goal leads or hope that the defense gets straightened out. Fantastic goal from Rooney and it's good to see RvP on the scoresheet - he won't be sitting much the next few games because......Rooney is a ####### idiot. I've spent the better part of Rooney's 10 years with United defending him and thinking (hoping) he's grown up. Well, he has but only slightly. He still can be a petulant child on the field. Granted it at least seems like it's because he really wants to win and not because he's Joey Barton's soulmate. Here's the thing though. United fans are still used to this stuipidity from him on occasion - it's like watching Scholes tackle, eventually you know they will get sent off. I don't think the side will miss much as Mata slots in for him and we know Mata won't get sent off as he's too lazy to chase someone down.

Arsenal - Spurs - not much to say, not sure the scoreline tells the story. Spurs had 2-3 good counter chances early and they wasted them - after that it was all Arsenal and they deserved the point and probably more.

All in all it was a good day for United even if it wasn't for Rooney. If Arsenal keeps getting injuries then it could be a crazy battle for 3rd and 4th. Chelsea may be out of reach for everyone but City by Xmas.

One of the idiots on the EPL highlight show bashed Alex Song for taking too many touches and getting the ball swiped. He said "maybe it was too long in La Liga and he's not used to the pace of this league yet". :bs: Song got run out of La Liga because he could't handle it there. Played maybe 6mins in the season. Get your facts straight, guy. Reminding me of the people at the bar today looking at the Barcelona-Granada score and using that as an example why La Liga sucks. Like Chelsea and Man City don't put up 4-6 goals against the relegation teams. I'd bet good money Granada would beat Burnley.

/soapbox

Three more goals today for Chelsea. 60+% possession and almost twice as many passes as their opponent. Yes it was Villa at home and not Barca in the Nou Camp. But the "Park the Bus" attitude bemoaned by everyone (no one more than me) seems to be a thing of the past. They have seven more goals than the next team (City and Everton) and are playing attractive, positive football. Cant tell you how happy I am.

Love love love the attack. Fabregas and Matic make for a dream central midfield with the right amount of mettle and creativity. Three of 1) Hazard, 2) Oscar, 3) Willian 4) Schurrle attack relentlessly. And Costa remains the biggest revelation in Europe simply by being in the right place and not being wasteful with his opportunities. Jose will always be conservative at heart, and we will continue to see Ramires on for Oscar/Willian/Schurrle when playing bigger teams, but even in those instances the club has more than enough attacking power to keep opponents on their toes.

You have all day to pass in slow Liga, guy. Granada couldn't best Forrest

Major League Soccer has a new single-season sellout record with a month to spare. The crowd of 22,591 at BMO Field for Toronto FC's 3-2 win over the visiting Portland Timbers represented the 113th sellout of an MLS game this season, surpassing the record of 112 set in 2012 and matched again in 2013.

Sacramento capped off a dream debut season winning the USL Pro Championship 2-0 tonight in front of an awesome crowd.
Fertile ground with no other pro sports teams in town.
A lot of fans poo poo the idea, but when you look at Seattle, Portland and KC, they all have one thing in common besides their ravenous fan bases. They don't have 4 other pro sports teams in the city.

The Revs have been here since 1996 and I bet the mayor barely knows who they are and yet there was Kevin Johnson right on the sidelines tonight cheering in Sacramento.

I went to an engeering college where the girl to guy ratio was about 1 to 7. Girls who would not be looked at twice in a regular college setting were lusted after.

I know this is a but tongue in cheek, but it seems to be a popular stance, so I will respond.

You EPL honks have a way to prove it. Beat them head to head. Champions League or Europa. What is the head to head record. I'll hang up and listen.

This answers the question better than I can.

I'll try to translate it though.

Win the right way when you think it's possible.

And that begs the question: If you don't think it is possible to win without playing cyclical, then aren't you admitting you're not the better team? Which leads to the question: just ####### admit it when you steal a victory. Ok, that wash't a question…. It's late and I'm drunk. But how about this too though…:

Let me flip your script, Z

Let's say your tam is going to lose. Would you rather see them go out on there sword giving the other team a hell of a fight the whole way through, or just sit back and hope that one of their two counters steals a goal before the wall is broken?

TIA

I'll Answer Yours

Win >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> LoseThe goal is to win games. Sure it would be great if you did it with style and flair. But nobody gets style points. You do waht it takes to meet your objective. If that means park the bus, then park the bus.
