Ugh. Someone talk me off a ledge, because these last several Swansea games have been depressing. Starting to wonder if I should have just stuck with my original plan of watching a full season before picking a side.

Pretty good MLS game - LA v Seattle last night. Good quality entertainment IMO for someone who very rarely finds time to watch MLS.
Yeah saw the second half. Dempsey's goal was top notch. Thought the keeper could have done much better on both of them. I did find it ironic that Twellman kept pointing out how little defense Donovan was playing.

Has the offside rule changed recently?

Was playing in a game last weekend. Striker coming across the field is offside when the through ball is played for him to run onto. He continues his run toward the ball. Defender turns and runs toward the ball but it gets by him without touching it. Offside player continues run takes the ball and heads toward goal. Defenders call for the offside. Ref says that since the defender went to try and play the ball it meant the striker was no longer offside and was a recent rule change.

I have not seen any ref call it this way and noone I have asked has confirmed this change. Any ideas here? (we were the offside team and no we didnt score it).
It has been tweaked recently, but not in a way that explicitly covers that situation. Here is the complete text of the current Rule 11.

Offside position

It is not an offence in itself to be in an offside position.
A player is in an offside position if:
• he is nearer to his opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the
second-last opponent
A player is not in an offside position if:
• he is in his own half of the fi eld of play or
• he is level with the second-last opponent or
• he is level with the last two opponents
Offence
A player in an offside position is only penalised if, at the moment the ball
touches or is played by one of his team, he is, in the opinion of the referee,
involved in active play by:
• interfering with play or
• interfering with an opponent or
• gaining an advantage by being in that position
No offence
There is no offside offence if a player receives the ball directly from:
• a goal kick
• a throw-in
• a corner kick
If the striker never stopped running for the ball, I don't see how the change would affect him.
Thanks, I didnt think so either and this particular ref has a history of making up rules as he goes. One of the worst (if not the worst) in the area.

On occasion he has said that he would book a guy for the foul if it was fall league and not since its summer season, handball by the keeper outside the box with his hand over his head on a shot was not a red card (last man and clear goal scoring opp)... He is extremely ridiculous and full of himself.

This game a player on the ground reached up and pulled a guy down by his collar (NFL horsecollar tackle) and only got a booking. He also missed 6 handballs, 2 pks and 2 red cards in the game. Yes the handballs were debatable mostly, but a shoulder in the back in the box, and intentional handball to save a goal by a guy on the ground are not, 2 PKs, 1 red there....

We lost 3-1 since they scored their chances and we didn't (although they admit their 2nd goal was offside and not even close) but when you should be playing men up and have 2 pks it does make a difference.

GB listening to music while watching instead.

Was a good game. Don't totally get why there is some type of playoff for the Supporters Shield though.

I thought these two games were just regularly scheduled games... not playoffs. ???
I'm pretty certain that's correct. As noted earlier in the thread, or perhaps in the Nat's thread, its somewhat of a scheduling quirk that Seattle and LA play each other on consecutive weekends for their final two league games of the season. I don't think there's any playoff associated with the Supporters Shield. I think its just like every other league in the soccer world - most points after playing the entire league schedule wins the cup. I believe the league finish determines in part the seedings and home field and the like for the MLS Cup.

Maybe....does seem odd they would have a home and home already scheduled for the top two teams though.

btw- it pains me to watch the BullStars. Just a mess of a team, but with some really nice upside (Sam's goal over the weekend was pretty nice... team defense on 3rd goal- not so nice)
