***Official Soccer Discussion Thread*** (4 Viewers)

From ESPN

Here is a look at the 10 most compelling and intriguing call-ups in Bradley's 33-player pool:

Jozy Altidore -- That Altidore was included in the pool was no surprise. What remains a mystery is just how many of the three friendlies he will actually take part in. With concerns being raised about Altidore feeling fatigue from a busy year of international and club soccer, it will be interesting to see if Bradley uses the U.S. team's best young prospect in all three matches, or if he leaves him home and uses him only against Argentina, which seems like a very real possibility.

DaMarcus Beasley -- Far from an unproven commodity, Beasley's inclusion is compelling because he has recently returned from major knee surgery that was expected to keep him out much longer. When healthy, he is one of the best players on the national team. If he is truly ahead of schedule, you can expect him to play a key role in the next round of Word Cup qualifying.

Kenny Cooper -- American fans are starving for new forward prospects to root for, and Cooper is one of the more attractive prospects in the bunch. His combination of size, technical and finishing ability make him a future national team fixture. Concerns about his ability to handle the speed of play on the international level have kept him out of the national team mix during the past year, but his early form for FC Dallas earned him a call he will need to make the most of.

Robbie Rogers -- There is little debate that left wing is one of the thinnest positions, if not the thinnest position, in the U.S. pool, and Rogers has gotten off to a fast start in MLS to force his way onto that short list. With Lewis not getting any younger and Bobby Convey proving unable to stay healthy, the 21-year-old Rogers will have a chance to prove not only that he is a serious national team prospect, but also that he deserves a place on the Olympic team.

Michael Orozco -- Unknown to American fans before his steady and impressive performance for the U.S. under-23 team in Olympic qualifying, Orozco has established himself as a regular starter in the Mexican First Division and looks like a bright center back prospect for the future. The 22-year-old San Luis defender might still be too young to be a serious national team candidate, but he will have a real chance to move up the pecking order as Bradley looks to inject some new blood in the defender pool.

Nate Jaqua -- When the 6-foot-3 striker left MLS champion Houston for an obscure team in Austria, it was believed he might not be heard from again. Five goals in 10 matches later, Jaqua's professional prospects are looking up. After helping SC Rheindorf Altach avoid relegation, Jaqua is now a free agent who did enough to catch Bradley's eye. With the pool of true target forwards rather thin and untested, Jaqua will get as good a chance as any to show that he has the tools to merit a serious look.

Freddy Adu -- Talk about a roller-coaster year so far for Mr. Adu. After turning in a superstar performance in Olympic qualifying, Adu returned to Benfica to find himself out of the squad rotation. After spending the past three months without any first-team soccer, Adu still earned the call. There is no questioning his talent, and Bradley will give him a chance to show that his casting out at Benfica is no indication of where he is in his development. Adu is still one of the most dangerous players in the Olympic pool, but perhaps a super-sub type of player for the national team at the moment, which is something Bradley will need down the road in situations like tough World Cup qualifiers.

Heath Pearce -- It's no surprise that Pearce was called, but it will be interesting to see whether he really is ready to put a stranglehold on the left back position. He fought through his own rough period with German club Hansa Rostock to fight his way back into the playing rotation, and he stands as the best left back prospect in Bradley's pool. With Jonathan Bornstein injured, Pearce could get several high-level matches that not only will give him a chance to solidify a starting national team role, but also raise his profile on the transfer market.

Josh Wolff -- Out of sight but not out of mind, Wolff has been plying his trade at 1860 Munich and has done well. He is known to most American fans as a forward but has evolved into a useful right winger in Germany. He should provide some depth at another thin position for the U.S. team. The 31-year-old showed some flashes against Brazil in September and should get his chance to earn a role not only in the upcoming friendlies, but in World Cup qualifying as well.

Eddie Johnson -- Call him "Mr. Enigma." Johnson made the move from MLS to the EPL side Fulham earlier this year and performed well enough early on to merit playing time and even a few starts. He didn't dress for the Cottagers down the stretch, and now we are left to wonder what sort of form Johnson will be in later this month. Will he be the talent who scored a bunch of national team goals four years ago, or will he be the ineffective forward who just hasn't produced or finished many chances in his recent national team performances?

So far we have 2 in for a potential Euro2008 fantasy league.

1) La Máquina Zeta

2) andyb

I think if we get to 8 owners, we can make this work.

When will Giuseppe Rossi by far the best American Player in the world who was born in Teaneck, NJ come and play for the US National Team.
We had a Rossi discussion a while back. IIRC, he's been capped for one of the Italian youth squads... mebbe an appearance on the Sr squad? IIRC, he was ruled ineligible for the US as a result of whatever Paisan action he got. Who remembers better...?And he's a guy that I doubt will ever make much of a mark for the Italian nats, but would be HUGE for the US.
He became cap-tied to Italy on his 21st birthday, which was a few months ago (ETA: Feb 1, 2008 was the deadline). He's ineligible for the USMNT.
I was unaware age had anything to do with eligibility.I thought the rule was this:

If you represent a country in a senior side game at a FIFA approved tournament, you are tied. Not all friendlies are considered valid for this.
You are correct. An A-level international cap-ties you. However, a player also becomes cap-tied if he represents a country in a FIFA-sanctioned youth tournament and does not change national team affiliation prior to his 21st birthday. There was a Feb 1 countdown thread over at the bigsoccer boards for Nat fans hoping Rossi would change his mind.

Saw that tackle on ESPN of Becks this morning. Hard tackle, worthy of a red. Becks got upended nicely. Came back vs 10 men and put a beauty of a pass on the far post for the game winning header.
That was a very nice pass but it was 4-1 at the time so it wasn't a game winner. For those impressed with Beckham's "brilliance" I'm not really. He's clearly a class player but he spent the whole day yesterday trying to make highlight passes. He probably fired 6-8 balls into the box that were no where near even as he was uncontested. His corner kicks (he got about 3) were all well overshot. But that one cross was pretty and he had one or two others that were on a dime as well. He's soft and no one is going to mistake him for much of a defender but I do think he and Klein worked well together along the right side. I will also say he is a very good ambassador. We were on the 2nd row at midfield and so the first half he was right there. He smiled and yucked it up a bit with the crowd. The cameras were annoying and I can't imagine trying to play with people asking for you to smile for their picture every 2 minutes. He was gracious and actually did look up at the crowd and smile a few times during breaks in action as he was getting water. On the tackle, did it look on purpose? Because I certainly couldn't tell but the way Becks reacted and the angle the defender took I assumed it was.

Good stuff, guys... :lmao: ####### pinko gumbah traitor, that Rossi.

The final weekend of the German Bundesliga was this past weekend.

Bayern topped the table with 22 wins, 10 draws and 2 losses and set a record by allowing only 21 goals in 34 matches.

Luca Toni took the scoring title with 24 goals for Bayern.

Werder Bremen finished 2nd and gets the other straight ticket to the Champions League.

Schalke 04 finished 3rd and will enter the qualifying stage of the CL

Hamburger SV and Wolfsburg finished 4th and 5th qualifying for the UEFA Cup.

1. FC Nürnberg, Hansa Rostock and MSV Duisburg were relegated.
And last years titel winner Stuttgart couldn´t even qualify for the UEFA-CUP directly. Bayern has a great team. Ribery is one of my favourite players to watch.

Borussia Mönchengladbach, 1899 Hoffenheim and 1. FC Köln were all promoted from the Second Division. Hoffenheim spent just one year in the Second Division after being promoted from the Third last year!
Just 3000 people life in Hoffenheim. But because SAP Co-founder Dietmar Hopp comes from there and has payed over the last years ~25million € for the rise of 1899 Hoffenheim form 5th league (2001) to first league. He is also building a 30000 seat stadion. It will be interesting to see how the club will hold up in the first league. They just qualified for the first league on the last gameday of the 2. Bundesliga. The best man they have is Ralf Rangnick a excelent coach, who worked with Schalke and Stuttgart before. Very good coach. They will have to buy a couple of players now.

Here is an article about the Club and his rise.

I'm in. It will be my third Euro '08 fantasy league. McDonald's and Uefa are partnered for an online fantasy setup that I believe is free.
I would be interested too. IIRC Yahoo also offered a free fantasy contest for the last World Cup. Maybe tehy are doing this again.

 I was going to post about Hoffenheim, but forgot. THat's the beauty of the promotion system- get an owner with vision and $$ and the sky's the limit, regardless of how small the town is, or how small the stadium (currently seats 5k- the same as my college soccer-only stadium).

I would love to participate, but one week during the tournament I will be out of town and have zero to questionable internet access. So, I'll just watch.

I hope thats not a knock on Cantona, greatest United Player ever!! Fans voted on it and he won!
Internet poll I bet you. Can't see the old timers voting for Eric over the Best that ever played, anywhere.
I dont know what the voting was just that United fans voted Cantona. I was surprised too but he is largely given credit as bringing United back to the forefront of the soccer world after several down years.
No real fan of United can say they didnt know about Becks. Must be a frontrunner. Got FSC on their cable and heard they were good. Unbelieveable. Whos number were they wearing???
Can't remember for sure on him. I'm pretty sure she was wearing a Ronaldo.
#7? hmmm, who wore that before Ronaldo? oh right Becks. lol

I thought the game was a 1-0 game? Thats what ESPN made it look like. THe tackle was late but i dont think it was on purpose. Late and from behind. As far as his brilliance, he is a guy that is going to get you the service from the outside. That is his job and he does it beautifully. He isnt a scorer outside of the 20 yard free kick and he isnt a defender. His job is to put balls into the box and serve the forwards, set them up for goals. At that level he is brilliant.

:goodposting: Some people tend to dismiss Beckham's skill because he doesn't make the highlight reals with his wicked crossovers or by blowing past his opponenets.Corners are considered important enough that most game summaries list them along with shots/shots-on-goal, etc. Corners are great because they result in the ball being placed in front of the goal-mouth, which provides the best scoring opportunity on the field.Beckham's long-ball from around the midfield line, does the same thing. It often turns the flow of the game from the defensive end to the attacking gaol-area with one quick kick of the ball. He essentially gives his team a half dozen free 'corner kicks' per game. Whiule that's not nearly as exciting as watching Christiano Renaldo do his thing, it can't be dismissed, either.

The final score of the LA Dallas game was 5-1The bad tackle on Becks occurred in the 75th minute when the score was 4-1

Deco done in Barça

Deco ha anunciado que no seguirá en el Barcelona la próxima temporada. En un acto promocional, el portugués arremetió contra la directiva azulgrana y señaló que no desea seguir donde no le quieren. "Iré a Inglaterra o a Italia, seguro. En España, no, porque el único club que hay del nivel del Barça es el Madrid y al Madrid nunca iría", dijo.
Translation: Deco has announced that he will not continue with Barça for next season. During a promotional act, the Portuguese player attacked the Barça leadership and signaled that he didn´t want to continue where he's not wanted. "I'll go to England or Italy I'm sure. It won't be in Spain because the only club that is on Barça's level is Madrid (Real) and I'll never go to Madrid.Analysis: Deco is a good talent and it looks like he can now be had on the cheap from Barcelona since he doesn't want to stay around. I think it's likely that he'll get picked up by José Mourinho, wherever he lands, which points to Milan (AC). Could any of the top tier English teams use him?
I like Deco a lot as a player but he shouldn´t have to play where the fans boo him every time he touches the ball and agree with his descision. I would be up for a Euro leauge but my intternet is questionable, how much do you thik it would take daily?

Hopefully we can set up a slow draft in the week prior.
I must be misunderstanding the rules. Why do we need a draft? Don't we all just pick our teams on our own on the web site and then we see how we stack up against each other in a division?
Honestly, I don't know. I thought it was more like Fantasy American Football, where there's no double players on each team.I'm gonna write my buddy that does fantasy MLS and ask him what the deal is since I've never played it.The other thing we could get going is a pick 'em type tournament pool where the games are all predicted in advance (win-draw-lose) all the way until the final. I remember charvik setting one of those up for WC2006. Hey, whatever happened to that dude anyway??

Honestly, I don't know since I'm unclear on the rules right now.¿También, cómo está Valladolid? ¿Has encontrado unos puselanos buenos? Buena suerte.

¿Vas al partido de los selecciones España-EEUU? Está en Santander en junio. Sería una oportunidad buenísima.

I do fantasy MLS.You pick your own team and manage it. It allows for 1000's of players to play in a league and there will be overlap.Think of it similar to the FBG contests that are run for the entire site.I am almost 100% sure there is no draft needed for this. You should set up a division, give us the info and then we will all pick our own teams.

BTW, I'm close to buying tickets for the Earthquakes-Galaxy game.

Anyone else going? Anyone else seen a soccer game at the Oakland Coliseum? If so, where are the best seats for value?

Tonights game will be the biggest in British Club Football ever. I'm not convinced it will be the most exciting though.

I'm sure most everybody here has read about Newcastle's Joey Barton getting 6 months in prison. Check out this rap sheet, though.

BAD NEWS BARTON:

• 2004: February - Barton picks up the first red card of his career in Manchester City's FA Cup fourth-round tie at Tottenham. After being booked for a late challenge in the first half, the midfielder is shown a second yellow for dissent.

April - Barton storms out of Eastlands before kick-off after being axed from the side to face Southampton.

July - Blasted by manager Kevin Keegan for causing a mass brawl in a pre-season friendly at Doncaster.

December - Stubs a lit cigar into the eye of young team-mate Jamie Tandy during club's Christmas party. Fined six weeks' wages by City. Forced to pay four weeks' salary - approximately £60,000 - immediately, with a further two weeks suspended for a year.

• 2005: May - Barton breaks leg of 35-year-old pedestrian while driving his car at 2am in Liverpool city centre.

July - Involved in an altercation with a 15-year-old Everton fan at City's team hotel in Bangkok, where the team are playing in the FA Premier League Trophy. Is fined eight weeks' wages by City after being found guilty of gross misconduct. Accepts punishment and agrees to undertake a programme of rehabilitation.

• 2006: September - Drops his shorts in the direction of Everton fans following City's 1-1 draw at Goodison Park. Merseyside Police investigate the matter.

December - Barton is shown the second red card of his career - this time a straight red - for a wild two-footed lunge on Abdoulaye Faye in City's 2-0 home defeat to Bolton.

• 2007: March - Arrested on suspicion of assault and criminal damage in an incident involving a taxi driver. Bailed until May pending further inquiries.

May - Suspended by City for the rest of the season after a training ground altercation with Ousmane Dabo, which leaves his team-mate needing hospital treatment.

October - Appears at Trafford Magistrates Court to answer a charge of assault on Dabo. Indicates he will plead not guilty at a full trial, which is expected to take place in June 2008.

November - FA investigate Barton's tackle on Sunderland's Dickson Etuhu in the Wear-Tyne derby but decide to take no action.

December - Causes controversy by describing the St James' Park crowd as 'vicious'.

Arrested in Liverpool city centre after a late-night incident and later charged with common assault and affray. Remanded in custody and misses Newcastle's New Year fixtures, released on January 3.

• 2008: May 20: Jailed for six months after admitting common assault and affray.
Talk about somebody who needs to get the ax. Sheesh.

All the papers had Cashley as an injury scare this morning.http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2008/ma...ed=networkfront
I read this morning that A Cole will play, but that was on a Chelsea message board so is perhaps of limited reliability.I saw an interesting article regarding the debts of the two participants: http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2008/ma...rleague.chelsea

Chelsea has approx. £736m in debt and ManU has £764m, although the bulk of Chelsea's debt is an interest free loan from Abramovich while ManU's biggest lenders are financial institutions and hedge funds.

Trying my best to come up with a legitimate excuse to leave work early and watch this game live.

Should be an epic battle.

Being that this is the last club match of the year, and both sides so direly want to bring home the championship, I think the game will be terrific.

I'm a bit eager to see the starting 11 for United. It appears Scholes will start, as he has been promised a spot, and I just can't see Giggs not playing.

Perhaps Tevez will be a sub?

Such an interesting story line. I know Chelsea fans aren't too high on Grant, but it's hard to knock what the teams done under his leadership since Mourinho left. A CL cup would just be icing on the cake. United would like nothing more than to beat another EPL club to win the title. especially with rumors flying around in regard to Ronaldo's future at Old Trafford.

When looking at these sides, it's so damn close. I'd rate Chelsea to have the edge in goal and strikers. I think United has the stronger backs....and midfield is really close. But, I think United has the edge in that they have a deeper and more dynamic side. I dunno, just give me a 2-1 United win here today :goodposting:

I don't think there should be any limit on the number of people who can play. Z Machine just needs to set up the division and give us the info and then anyone who wants to play can.

Z,

You are getting pretty good response so far for the Euro Fantasy League.

Do you think it would be worth starting a separate thread for? With all of the games on ESPN, you might pick up some casual observers who might like to play but don't read this thread normally?

Just got the go ahead to take off in an hour. Will be  and watching the game.

Still contemplating whether I should call the wife and let her know or just have her show up while 8 or 9 deep into a case. :goodposting:

I would give this a shot if I end up making an appropriate number for you guys. I have a feeling that I would get crushed though because my knowledge is limited outside of the EPL and a few other well known teams - Barca, Real Madrid, AC Milan, etc.In other words, I'll pass unless I can help you get to a desired number.

The teams are in. And here they are, starting with the Premier League champs, Manchester United: Van der Sar, Brown, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Carrick, Hargreaves, Scholes, Ronaldo, Rooney and Tevez. Subs from: Kuszczak, Giggs, Anderson, Nani, O'Shea, Fletcher and Silvestre.

Interesting that Hargreaves gets the start here. I kind of expected Giggs over Hargreaves, but that is about the only small surprise I see.

Looks like there is a ton of room for adjustment here with a whole slew of midfielders on the bench. I

And Premier League runners-up, Chelsea: Cech, Essien, Terry, Carvalho, A Cole, Makelele, Ballack, Lampard, Malouda, J Cole and Drogba. Subs from: Cudicini, Shevchenko, Mikel, Kalou, Alex, Belletti and Anelka.

Just as was mentioned earlier. A bit more firepower on Chelsea's bench with Shevchenko and Anelka. I'm sure the thug Mikel will make his way onto the pitch at some point too, probably for Joe Cole.
