Z Machine, disappointing to see Atletico fall back in the race for second place in la Liga this weekend.Hopefully they can pick up some pointers when they play Barca tomorrow.
Harsh...My Atleti were on a 15 match unbeaten run in all competitions going into that game. They'll be in the race for a CL spot come May. Barça is running away with the league right now, being 11 points up. The interesting stories are whether they can translate their La Liga success into CL success, or fail as many Spanish teams have in the past when leading La Liga. The other story is which teams will get the other 3 CL spots, and which teams will get the 2 UEFA spots.Barça is up 1-0 on Atlético right now in the Copa del Rey. Effing Messi. No Eto'o or Agüero today either. I don't see Forlán carrying Atéltico today unfortunately. He plays much better with Agüero next to him as he's free to poach and run the counter attack. In good news, Maniche and Maxi are back, who IMO are critical to a successful run in any competition.

Educate the noob, part 3:They were making a big deal about some team beating Manchester City three to nil (see, I'm getting the lingo down). :goodposting: Thanks.
There is no need to do this. "Zero" is perfectly fine. Its a pet peeve of mine - American soccer announcers using British terms like "nil" and "pitch" and referring to teams in the plural. The FA cup, in my opinion, is one of the world's greatest sporting events.
It is a pretty neat concept. LOL about referring to teams in the plural. Just a matter of time before I'm saying, "Kansas City are pretty bad..." :lmao:

Stupid Heitinga gave up a penalty and got a red card. Atlético are down 2-0 after Messi knocks in the PK.

Their Copa chances are now officially shot. They may lose 4 games this year to Barça, which have officially overtaken Portsmouth as my most hated team.

It was a stupid penalty as it looked like Coupet had the shot covered fairly well, if Messi could even get a volley off on goal.Pinto was completely frozen on the Madrid goal.

BTW, most other leagues have competitions similar to the FA Cup. La Liga has the Copa del Rey (King's Cup) and the Coppa Italia in Italy and the Coupe de France in France. None of these are as important as the FA Cup though, however all of these competitions feature clubs from smaller divisions facing off and sometimes beating the big clubs. In the Copa del Rey this year, Real Unión beat Real Madrid based on aggregate goals. They play in the 3rd division league (Liga Segunda B) and have a 5,000 seat stadium. The players were delirious after losing 3-2 in front of over 60,000 in Madrid, rolling around on the grass and coming to tears. It was awesome.

Can you give an example of what you mean?I know they sometimes shorten names like Revolution to Revs, but I have a feeling you are talking about something else.

I have never heard an american soccer announcer refer to Manchester United or DC United as "Uniteds".

This may just be my homer glasses on, but this team is built to win all three competitions this year. The way Pep has managed this team has led to a large number of reserves that can play in these midweek games or in the league games without the team losing form. Barca has not put together a starting squad for one match I have seen this season. Additionally the injuries to Iniesta and Milito have allowed Barca to develop talent such as Busquets, Pique, and Sanchez in addition to the already strong stable of reserves. The squad today only had four of what I consider the first team starting. As long as Pep can keep all of the starters motivated and happy and the reserves playing at this high a level, Barcelona wins all three.

we say, "Green Bay is the best team in the NFL"they say, "Chelsea are the best side in the EPL"

we would normally say, "Chelsea is the best team in the EPL", but some American announcers feel a need to adopt the British usage when referring to soccer (even MSL soccer), to sound more authentic I assume.

to be fair we just as often say:"The Packers are the best team in the NFL"

The city is singular but the nickname is plural. In the case of Chelsea, there is no distinction between the two.

FWIW, the typical Spanish usage is to refer to the city name/team in the singular, prefaced with the definite article ("el" or "la"). The nickname if referred to in the plural. Examples: "El barça", "Los colchoneros", just like we do in the USA in English. It gets a bit strange when there are names like "Newell's Old Boys" in Argentina. They would still use "el Newell's Old Boys". This make sense when thinking about the full name of the team is actually, "El Club Atlético Newell's Old Boys."I'm on a linguistic kick today.Oh and I somewhat agree with you DP. Barça is on a tear right now, and they are doing a good job keeping the players relatively healthy and not burning them out. They have a great shot at "el triple".

NBA announcers struggle with this when announcing Thunder, Jazz, Heat, and Magic games all the time. To say "Chelsea (or the Jazz) is..." sounds kinda weird. I do agree with cletius' overall point though. I think most of the FSC guys are Canadian, but the way they try to bogart the English phrases/slang is so annoying. You can just tell it's not natural.

Anyone ever watch Barca TV? It's just a bunch of old Barca games that they show in the afternoons on FSC.

I'm watching a 2002 game between Mallorca and Barca now....it's hilarious seeing guys who are either old and retired now or stars now who were really young back then.

Samuel Eto'o just had a crack at goal for Mallorca and Leo Franco's work in goal are keeping them in the game at 0-0. For Barca, Marc Overmars and Patrick Kluivert are dominant offensively.

Damn they got Cocu out there too....it's like the ####### Dutch national team playing for Barca.

And they showed a really young and really shaggy Carles Puyol sitting in the stands taking the game off :bag:

I watch it when I am spending time at my parent's house because they have FSC.I love it, particularly sense most of the games were before I followed European soccer as heavily as I do now and are new to me.

Well it was a nice win, sure, but it was the home leg of a two-legged cup tie. If they can advance to the next round, I'll be very impressed.
Chances of this game being on Fox Soccer Channel?
0.0001%I don't think I've ever seen a Carling Cup game on FSC....in general, the Carling Cup isn't regarded very highly....I was very surprised to see that United played a pretty good side in this match....most of the top teams play their backups in these games.

This probably doesn't help most of you, but it is being rerun on Setanta right now.

Everton contacted Villareal about getting Jozy on loan for the rest of the season. However it seems that the yellow submarine are intent on keeping Jozy in town, despite his small amount of playing time.

Yeah the Monaco v Juve game was just a friendly to get back into match shape. Serie A takes a Christmas break and have no league games for about 3 weeks, unlike the Premier. Not sure which other leagues take a full Christmas break.

The Bundesliga finished the first half of their season the 14th of December and don't start back up until the end of January.

An extremely entertaining match this morning between West Ham and Newcastle. Wide open, with big swings in momentum. Finished 2-2, but could have easily been 4-4 or so. It was also a nice contrast of styles, with Bellamy and Cole trying to beat Newcastle directly with pace, while the Magpies were playing wide and using Andy Carroll (who've I've only seen as a member of my reserve team in Football Manager) as a target man.

Yep, that was a good match. Caught the second half. Those clowns posting about soccer being boring have no clue. Anyway, a couple noob thoughts:1) How did the ref miss Bellamy getting mugged in the penalty area? Looked pretty obvious.2) Carlton Cole is another guy I like to watch. 3) Loved Carroll's reaction to his first-ever PL goal. One big jump and fist pump. That was it. No preening around or anything. All the more impressive being that it was the equalizer.

I don't think he missed it. Commenters and fans will always complain, but I don't have a problem with refs being more likely to "swallow the whistle" in the box. Refs don't particularly want to decide games. In a typically low scoring game, a penalty is likely to make the difference. So there's no doubt that Bassong would have been whistled for that foul anywhere else. But it's also unlikely that that foul kept Bellamy from scoring (and probably could have kept his feet if he were inclined). And if every legitimate foul in the box resulted in a penalty, the diving problem would be 100 times worse.

and Ipswich ties again at home today. I am losing hair over my Tractor Boys.

Does anyone else follow this stuff? If anyone does please give a possible coach over Magic Magilton. I love getting the 606 board riled up. Curbs?

Anyone else watching Man U-Chelsea tomorrow on FSC?
affirmative - I expect it will be the best football of the weekend. With two games in hand, a loss to ManU today will effectively put Chelsea into third place and could make the season more about a battle for a CL spot than a league title. With plenty of grumbling about Scolari's tactics over the past month or so, it will be interesting to see how his first 11 line up. I think many fans would like to see Anelka and Drogba starting the game together up front (probably putting J. Cole on the bench), but I don't think that's very likely. Anelka is leading the premiership with 14 goals, so its kind of hard to sit him down, but he still somehow has not inspired much confidence and very few consider him to be a really special striker, like Drogba has been the past two seasons.Go Blue

Based on what I saw of Chelsea in the match against Fulham, I thought Chelsea could look very vulnerable in this game. Now, I'm no Premier League expert by ANY stretch of the imagination, but looks like I was proved right.

Meanwhile, my boys at Liverpool haven't lost since November against Tottenham. A nil-nil tie against Stoke City yesterday was....odd. Kinda has me worried going into next week's match against Everton, who's a much better opponent.

Manchester hasn't allowed a goal in league play since November 8.Before Liverpool plays another game, they may be looking up to United in the standings :lmao:

Without Rio, Carrick was a sub, and Park played the full 90. Wasnt their top team and they still handled chelsea. I loved it. Great goals by Vidic, Rooney and Berbatov. How can anyone hope to contain the speed on the left of Ronaldo and Evra?? Love that combo out there!Giggs had his best game in quite awhile. Good to see him in form. The reffing was questionable both ways. Lots of early needless yellows (esp on Carvalho and Ronaldo) and some questionable calls, but nothing that caused the game to be determined outside of the players.United is rounding into form, have 2 games in hand and are past the worthless world club cup games. Its going to be quite a finish!

Atlético screwed the pooch today, losing at home to Athletic de Bilbao. WTF mang. Not good. They've slipped to a three-way tie for the 5th, 6th, and 7th in the league table. They've really had a great chance these last two weeks and effed it up. Bah.

After Schuster left Real, people were wondering if they were gonna slip into EUFA Cup territory, but lo and behold, they're now #2 in the league after thrashing Mallorca. Nonetheless, they're probably gonna be 12 points back from Barça.

Donovan gets 90 minutes in for Bayern as they get ready for the second half of the season.

From fcb.de

A sublime moment of skill by Miroslav Klose with practically the last kick of the match handed Bayern a prestige 3-2 victory over top Abu Dhabi outfit Al Jazira on Saturday, as Jürgen Klinsmann tried out 19 of his first-team squad in the opening friendly of the mid-season break.

The meeting with the UAE League leaders and Asian Champions League contenders was certainly not to be taken lightly, and Klinsmann duly started with most of the players who formed Munich’s first-choice line-up in the last few matches before Christmas.

Christian Lell came in for Massimo Oddo, suspended for the first three Bundesliga fixtures of the year, with new arrival Landon Donovan celebrating his Bayern debut alongside Luca Toni.

A 6,500 crowd turned out at the Mohammad Bin Zayed Stadium for a very watchable evening’s football, former VfB Wolfsburg striker Fernando Baiano handing the home side a fourth-minute lead on the break as the German champions were caught cold, but Bastian Schweinsteiger deservedly levelling things up after half-an-hour.

The Bavarians’ left flank again caught the eye as Philipp Lahm, Ze Roberto and Franck Ribery staged a number of intelligent passing interchanges, while Donovan looked mobile on his maiden outing in a Bayern jersey, narrowly failing to net a tricky half-volley but setting up Schweinsteiger for the equaliser with an intelligent pass into the inside-right channel.

FCB boss Klinsmann made nine changes at half-time, with only US star Donovan and full-back Lell completing the full 90 minutes. The run-out represented a chance for squad players such as Jose Sosa, Breno and Andreas Ottl to impress alongside more established figures in the shape of fit-again Hamit Altintop and Tim Borowski.

Daniel at both ends

The second period was a roller-coaster ride for Daniel van Buyten. The Belgian colossus, captaining the Munich side after Mark van Bommel went off at half-time, handed his men the lead on 48 minutes with a fulminating drive from a free-kick, but the centre-half then scored at the other end, inadvertently diverting a cross past number two keeper Hans-Jörg Butt to level the scores with quarter of an hour remaining.

The game looked destined for a draw as neither side proved able of creating much in front of goal in the closing stages, only for Klose’s neat footwork and dainty 12-yard flick with the outside of his right boot to hand the visitors a not undeserved 3-2 victory right at the end.
