I dont know much about this sport, but I dont understand how a team with as many gifted players as United could be this bad. There are obviously a few pieces that they overpaid for and are probably overrated, but they have enough actual dudes on that squad to be in the mix. 14th with a negative goal differential? Brutal.
The sum has been less than the parts for too long. That's what I was getting at with my previous post.. it's like they can roll into some good play because the players are good enough, but for the most part it just looks directionless- especially against all the other EPL teams that know who they are and play that way.
:goodposting:

They don't look motivated half the time. When they want to, they can run with anyone. To often they don't seem to want to, or don't think they need to. They also are definitely not together as a team in what they do. Front 4 presses, the rest doesn't. Turnover the ball and only a few are sprinting back to defend. To many afraid to tackle or take a card.

Is that due to how ETH wanted them to play or is that the players?
Yeah. They're capable of beating anyone and they're capable of losing to anyone. Sometimes in the same game. Only caught a few matches this season (most recently a good chunck of Fenerbache), but is what their squad under him has felt like to me.
:lmao:

Sadly the bolded is so very true.

So who are the main culprits from a player standpoint

Seems like the younger crew (Garnacho, Hojlund, Mainoo) are all pretty high motor guys. The younger defenders (DeLigt, Lisandro) both seem bought in. I would imagine all the new purchases are still engaged. So is it the Rashford, Bruno, Eriksen, Caseimero, Mount group?

Hard to pinpoint who because each game someone different causes their downfall. Lack of consistency, lack of effort, needing to concede before they get mad and play. To much entitlement. I don't need to play hard, I will start no matter what. ETH started to rid the locker room of that his first year. Fell apart last year with the injuries and so much bad play.

So far I like who they brought in this and last summer aside from Mount. Zirkzee is still a question though.

The biggest problem though is the lack of scoring. They are near the top in chances created but bottom is goals scored. Missing chances keeps their opponent in the match and lets them grow into the game. West Ham should have been done by halftime.
I also do not see them hustling back on D after a turnover or to stop a counter. Other teams sprint back and organize. United does not.

For me?
Reel in Bruno. He doesn't need to press ahead of the striker, he needs to occupy the middle. Stay home more.
Hate to say it, but may need to sell Rashford. Change of scenery may be best for both him and United.
Say bye to Mount, Shaw, Maguire, Lindelof, Evans, Antony. Consider letting Casemiro and Eriksen leave as well.
Build around Maz, De Ligt, Martinez with hopefully Yoro at the back. Play Amass, he is a left back, see what he can do. Ugarte, Mainoo at the pivot with Collyer as depth. Bruno at the 10, stay at the 10. Amad, Garnacho and Hojlund as a front 3.

Needs depth and competition all over, not realistic to let all those go in one window. But you are 14th. Major changes are still needed.

Ruben Amorim has verbally agreed to become Manchester United manager.

Sources in Portugal say Amorim has already said yes to #MUFC.

Manchester United and Sporting now working on compensation. Amorim has a €10m clause, as @David_Ornstein first called.
Interesting. I saw they were after him but didn't know he said yes. I don't know enough about it to say if this is good or bad or just who's next.

I know the goal scorers and flair players get all the accolades normally so it was really nice to see a defensive/holding midfielder win the Ballon D’Or today

Well deserved in my ignorant opinion. Every time I see City play it seems Rodri is the straw that stirs the drink.
He was the guy with club and national team success this year. It made sense. Is it weird if I think Haaland is a better player on his own team? Yeah, maybe. But Haaland can't do anything with Norway. And he, Mbappe (and maybe Cole Palmer) were the only guys with monster offensive seasons in the big leagues. Vinicius had a very good year and the Champions League success. But Brazil sucked. So perfect time to pick the lesser appreciated position.

Reports out of Saudi Arabia are saying that Al Hilal will possibly sell Neymar to Inter Miami this winter. This would be reunite him with his former Barca teammates up front in Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.
Laugh emoji.

Seriously?

I mean, I know MLS makes it up as it goes along, but seriously?

It may be nothing but rumors but people are expecting something on the big side due to the Club World Cup. Inter Miami opens up the competition in Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

"Technically", I think Miami could sign him as they only have two players in the DP range right now, Messi and Busquets. All the other big names are capping out at $1.5m which is another category.
According to people on twitter, Neymar has recently bought a house in Miami.

I don’t know if this related to the possible change in seasons for MLS in a couple of years or is just coincidental or just a pure rumor but Wynalda said on a podcast that he knows one MLS eastern conference team that is considering moving to a new city and almost every seems to agree it must be Montreal.

Never a fan of this for any sport.

If this rumor is true, it is particularly egregious.

Montreal spent the least money in the entire league again this season
Montreal sold out all 17 games at Stade Saputo this season.

Those two items almost never coincide in sports.

Info coming out of Montreal is saying the city they move to will be Detroit…

"The new MLS season will make playing in cold northern cities untenable... so we're moving to Detroit" :oldunsure:

I'm probably with most who would have preferred to see the Messi show live on through the playoffs.

That said, reading Jordi Alba complain about the playoffs being "unfair" makes me happy to see them out

Speaking of complaining, I just read that Garnacho didn't celebrate his fantastic goal today because he feels like he'd lost support from United fans. Nothing goes towards regaining support more than whining about it...bold plan, Cotton.

Before the game there was a video of him signing autographs and an older fan telling him all the things he needs to work on. I don't think the man was meaning to be disrespectful but I am sure Garnacho hears all of that via social media, fans yelling and the talking heads/pundits so he probably took it badly. Plus being young it probably hurt.

Not saying either were right, just adding some context.

Suarez diving, Messi running through Guzan to get the ball after a goal and another Miami player pushing Guzan like it was his fault just made me happy Miami is out.
Did any get booked?

Add to that the kick outs by Messi and other Miami players which won't get called and Alba's crying. Yeah I am happy to see them out, despite wanting Beckham's team to do well.

From the Canadian investigation

======

Only a few months after Herdman became coach of the men's national team in November 2018, sources told Radio-Canada he had the national team spy on the small island nation of Saint Kitts and Nevis, whose national team has never qualified for the FIFA World Cup.

"They were fishermen," one source said. "When we found out, we were laughing amongst ourselves. The people in the organization who knew about it found it absurd."

Do any of you NYers know why the NY derby playoff is being played in the Mets stadium? Why is it not being played in Yankee stadium?

NYCFC’s stadium can’t be ready soon enough. I heard they are even capping tickets for the game because the Mets stadium was already closed up for the winter and they only want to reopen a portion of it.

Thanks to the agreement between #CercleBrugge and FC Cincinnati, Kevin Denkey becomes the most expensive transfer in MLS history. The Greens & Blacks will receive nearly €17 million from the deal, with 10% of any future resale. As for the Togolese international, the contract is expected to run for 5 years, with an annual net salary of around $3 million

I have no idea which way this transfer went. Out or in?

Got the Mexico-Honduras game on and it's in Mexico and for the first time ever I am not hearing the dumb chant when the opposing team does a goal kick

Long time Messi teammate at club and country, Javier Mascherano, will be the new Inter Miami coach.

No club coaching experience but he has been the Argentine U20 coach for a while and coached Argentina’s Olympic team.

Some comments from the Inter Miami press conference today (I do not agree with Mas about Messi in 2026 but we will see)

=====================

Inter Miami managing owner Jorge Mas on Leo Messi’s contract expiring in 2025: “I fully expect to see Messi playing in our new stadium in 2026”.

Inter Miami managing owner Jorge Mas on the club's ambition:“We’re going to continue having the best team we can. There are no budget limitations, we will bring the best players we can from anywhere in the world.”

Inter Miami managing owner Jorge Mas on the club's next head coach: “I’ve seen a lot of names and rumors. I can confirm that today we are close to finalizing an agreement with a coach. We’ll announce a new coach for Inter Miami in the next few days.”

Seems someone has changed the YouTube algorithm making longer form videos more relevant (I wonder why), so here's one hour of comedy OGs

Andy, stadium porn alert...

That can’t get built fast enough. Getting out of the baseball stadium(s) is going to be such a massive upgrade for City and for the league in general.

Speaking of stadiums, up here in Boston, we are now officially closer to a stadium than ever before. We finally got past a key vote that had been blocking the project. Still a ton of hurdles to go of course but at least they can actually start to work on them.

So my kid joined AYSO United this past spring. It's AYSO's club team. Looks like they offer some soccer trips for kids around the country to go to Europe. Different ages and locations.
My soon to be 16 year old daughter is interested in the Spring Break trip. Training and playing vs teams in the Netherlands and Germany. Seeing Eredivisie and Bundesliga games. Trip to Dortmund, training with Dutch coaches, seeing the sights. She's excited and I want to make it happen.

They also open it up to parents and families to go. I'm thinking about it. Debating whether to send her alone or try to go with her. She's open to both.

I did a similar trip when I was 18. England, Denmark, Norway. Was amazing. Different time in the world so we had little supervision. Plus being male helped. Did have a woman's team go too.

Might have to do some crowdfunding here with all you lovely soccer people to pay for one or both of us! hahaha.
Well they didn't get enough players signing up wo make this trip work so it's not happening. :sadbanana:
The kid is hugely disappointed.
Might have to look into doing something else for spring break.

I guess this is going to be scheduled midweek, which would scupper plans to watch the game (particularly given the questionable weather resilience of Hallam's pitch), but this is cool
