I can’t get over how many times this keeps happening. Coaches need to make this a severely punishable offense.

Gasperini after Club Brugge eliminate Atalanta: "The elimination is completely fair. Both teams had chances but they took theirs... Lookman is one of the worst penalty takers I've ever seen, even in training he is bad. Retegui and De Ketelaere were there and he took the pen. I did not like it."

It's uncanny to see it continue to happen. Sports is obviously different and these guys are all assets worth millions so that makes enforcement tough, but show this level of disrespect to your manager and team in any other industry and you'd be getting walking papers before the end of the shift.

Lookman has been out for almost a month with injury. In his absence, Atalanta been bad, with a win vs Verona their only positive result.
They were down, at home, 0-3 at HT to Club Brugge.
He subbed on at half time.
He scored in the 46'
He had another in the net about 10 minutes later VAR'd for offside.
They were awarded a PK. Atalanta did nothing without him in the lineup, he was a spark, a difference maker. Gasperini crying after the fact is pathetic, imho.

Doesn't mean he should take the PK. Not everyone is made/able/ready to take them, no matter how easy they should be. Like Shaq and free-throws.

I'm not disagreeing with that. However, it's like when you played NBA jams and you're heating up, you're on fire, you just are in the zone.
And if you read Lookman's response today, he stated that the appointed PK taker asked him to take the kick.
I felt Gasperini's statement was in very poor form.
Everyone misses pk's.

I hadn't seen the comments. If the PK taker told Lookman to take it then the coach needs to take it up with the team internally. And I agree the coach probably shouldn't be calling out his players publicly like that, but its the Jose model. Some do, some don't. Although maybe that's more of his point? You told this player to take a PK that is so bad he misses in training!

Regardless, I agree with you on the coach's comments.

BUT Its really not anything like NBA Jams heating up. At all. Zone or not, PKs are a different beast than run of play scoring.

Here is a video. This is so cringe worthy.

What a great rule change. I'm sure Arteta is fuming.

"Football’s laws to change next season so that a corner instead of an indirect free-kick will be awarded if goalkeeper holds on to the ball for longer than 8 secs. Referees will have a visual five-second countdown."

I am bracing myself for the refs to not even start the count until the keeper catches the ball, slow motion falls to the ground, and takes 5 seconds to stand back up.

And then gk will milk the 8 seconds all to then just drop the ball out of his hands and kill a few more seconds before kicking it up field.

Had some quality celebrations by himself while his teammates all went to MF. And then got yanked

Quality PK though.

Bundesliga 2 table is mad.

And in the weird stats of the day...two teams in the top 5 leagues have scored in every away league match this season. First team is Liverpool. They're pretty good. The other team is Holsten Kiel, who scored again this morning. And even though they have scored in every single away match, to date, they have zero wins (three draws and eight defeats) and the least away points in the Bundesliga.

And if they just enforced the existing laws they wouldn't need to do that
So much this. I also understand the chaos created by a indirect free kick on the 6. So many things can go wrong, fouls called, etc that I get why they never wanted to call it. But its the law, you have to enforce it. Hopefully this helps since its corner.

Haven't seen how this will be enforced as in when they start counting the 8 seconds. I imagine it will end up being like 15 secs total since players will need to clear out.
And anyone getting in the way of the release will need to be punished too.

Puskas competition wrapped up early this year. Just go ahead and give it to her now.

Zlatan had a few in the general vicinity and I saw John Harkes take a wild swing at a few like this in person back in the day, but he never came close to scoring. Love that one of one is still possible after all the games and highlights I've seen. Spectacular.
:jawdrop:

Theres like only a handful of people on the planet who would even think of trying that, let alone scoring off it. Great googly.

This is more than double what FIFA paid teams in the 2022 World Cup...

===========================

FIFA will pay total prize money of one billion dollars to participants in the Club World Cup taking place in the United States this year, a source close to negotiations told AFP on Wednesday.

As much as I would have tried to go watch United play in this, glad they are not and their players can get a proper rest and offseason for once in a long time.
Tooooo many games already and this money grab is a joke.

But damn that's a lot of cash

Ironically I think Man United is going to be the US any way this summer on one of their normal "fleece the foreign supporters" tours that all the big teams seem to do.

True. And it looks like its going to be east coast based so I will not be fleeced.

Difference being its preseason games, not a meaningful games. Plus it will happen after a holiday period.

I guess it depends on how teams approach the tournament. Last year Chelsea played 5 friendlies in the US in July and August. I didn't watch a minute of these and would never spend a dollar to attend in person. This year they have three group stage games in June, in Atlanta and Philadelphia, maybe a couple more if they get through. The opponents are more interesting and the games are probably somewhat more meaningful. I'll definitely be watching.

I'm looking forward to seeing the big South American clubs play the big Euro clubs. Bayern against Boca Juniors in a meaningful game? River Plate v Inter? PSG v Botafogo? Throw in some big AFC and CAF clubs we never get to see plus Inter Miami? Hell yeah to all this.

Sigh……

FIFA is now considering expanding the World Cup in 2030 to 64 teams.
And in today's group stage game that people had to pay $500 a ticket for.... we have France versus St. Kitts.
They already took so much fun out of qualifying by going to 48 teams, it is going to be even worse if they expand to 64 teams.

Qualifying used to be my favorite part of the sport, and now I may see it become almost meaningless for the rest of my life.

Well, United, claiming to be broke and almost ran out of money before Christmas, announces plans to build a new 100K seat stadium next to Old Trafford.
https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...ew-stadium-next-to-old-trafford-norman-foster

The concept art looks, well a bit like a circus, which is probably rightly reflective of the state of the club. Hopefully it looks better for real.

I am conflicted. Old Trafford is historic but badly needs renovation. Just don't want it to lose that feel and atmosphere. But also a new stadium could be great too. Hope it maintains character unlike the outside of Tottenham.

Either way, glad I got to see a game there before this. And will have to go again after the new one is built (5-7 years away)

I don't mind it tbh. I thought US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis and SOFI stadium in LA looked crazy in the renderings too, but both are beautiful and spectacular in person. I have a feeling that concept stadium would be really cool in real life.

Of course, the whole "we're broke, but are now gonna spend $3B on a new stadium" gimmick is special, but that's professional sports for you.

I'm sure it will come out better than it looks. SofI is actually pretty nice. Last year we saw games at Old Trafford and the Emirates, walked around Fulham, Chelsea, Wembley and Tottenham. The outside of Tottenham just looked so shiny and generic. The others had character. Just don't want to lose that.

Sounds like a whole redevelopment will be going on building up the area, so I imagine there will be some government or public funding going on.
Maybe if they stopped overpaying for players while underselling others, they may have some money. Oh and the whole Glazers putting the club in debt thing....
