My ding on the Bayern/Real/Ajax/Liverpool/Milan teams is that you didn't really see the same sort of player movement across borders you do now.  Or at least that's my impression.  Without looking I'll bet those teams were mostly made up of home-grown players?

ETA:  what retired said.

Hmm, I must be doing something wrong

As of today, the countries will start next year with the following

England: 59.159

Italy: 59.082

And after today there are still 2 English teams alive while there is only 1 or 0 Italian teams alive so this narrow gap could widen unless again I am doing something wrong.
Trusting an American journalist on European football...first mistake.  By and large I completely ignore them.

Except for the guys on NBC, they are awesome.

In my lifetime, the greatest pre Bosman team was the late 80's Milan.  The team they put together with only 3 foreign players was just sick.

I don't say this lightly and find it annoying that the latest is always the best, but if Barca go back-to-back and finish off the the CL is it fair to suggest we're watching the greatest team in soccer history having the greatest season in soccer history?

Demolition job on River Plate to win WCC.

Home and dry in the league.

One win from hoisting the Copa.

38-match unbeaten run across all competitions, 102-22 GD.

IMO the Barca style is a joy to watch even without the forwards.

Then you add Messi, Suarez, Neymar.

If they win the league and all three cups, where do you put them all-time?
Easy to say that this is the greatest team ever IMO.

Interestingly, the 89-90 Milan side was voted best club side of all time, but they didn't win the Scudetto that year.  Napoli did.  The year before, when Milan also won the European Cup, they finished third in Serie A.

Also, did you know that the double winning 94 Milan team coached by Fabio Cappello won the Scudetto with 34 goals scored the entire season?

Draper could be wrong. Or I could be wreading rong.

Have strep throat so I'm working from home today. Usually this would suck but NCAA basketball plus round 2 of LFC vs ManU makes it a-ok.

reports coming out that both Herrera and Blind are out for today's game.  PLEASE dont let that mean more  :fro:

Also means we may see Carrick with Smalling in the center of the Defense.

Hoping for:

            De Gea
Verela, Smalling, Rojo, CBJ
            Schneiderlin
Lingard Schweini Mata Martial
            Rashford

although Martial up top and Memphis on the left wouldnt be bad

What we will probably get is:

              De Gea
Darmien, Smalling, Carrick, Rojo
            Schweini Fellaini
Lingard  Mata Memphis
            Martial

:wall:

Barcelona 2008-11  -- They won 6 trophies in the 2009 calendar year.  First Spanish Club to the league, cup, CL triple in the 08-09 season.  In the 2009-10 La Liga season, they won the league with a European record 99 pts but got Jose'd in the CL semis by Inter.  In 10-11 season,  the team won the league, Cup, CL triple again.
Actually, the 2010-11 team lost the Copa del Rey final to Real Madrid, so they didn't pull off the treble again (of course, they knocked out the Meringues in the CL semis, so that certainly eased the sting of that defeat).  That 2009-10 CL loss to Inter stings because it kept Barca from playing the final in the Bernabeu, which would have been fantastic.  It also stings because I feel Inter won in part because of that stupid Iceland volcano that erupted and closed off air travel and forced Barcelona to bus to Milan.  Of course, it didn't help that the board spent 85 million Euros (plus giving away Eto'o) for Zlatan, Maxwell, Keirrison and Chygrynskiy.  Still, that 3-year stretch was fantastic - those teams were loaded.

That said, I feel as if this iteration of Barcelona is better.  It's ridiculous to have a front three of Messi, Suarez, and Neymar.  And while the current midfield isn't as good as the earlier teams, a trio of older Iniesta-Rakitic-Busquets is a still an excellent group.

My favorite (just pure playing styles) attacking 3 some from Barca was the Romario, Hagi, Stoichkov version.

well the reports of Blind being out were incorrect, but Herrera wasn't.

At least now they will be able to concentrate on qualifying for next year's Europa....

This iteration is capable of winning in many more ways than the Pep years.  This incredible 38 game run has had a lot of games that previous iterations would not have been able to break down the bus in.

That said, there are still games to be played.  PSG and Bayern both will present significant threats to take the CL.  I'm just hoping they can make the semis so I can go...

The tree with a beautiful touch to Rojo :wall:
He has played better today.  Too bad Rojo missed. Not sure how that was a foul on him at the top of the box.  And as I wrote this Fellaini with the chest trap, stolen by Pool so Fellaini fouls him.    And Lalas yelling a mistake by Fellaini liverpool are in made me laugh in the first half.

United should sign a guy like Darmian to play right back and then put him on the bench
I like Darmien but Verela offers more in attack and the drop off in defense is minor.
