F U Fellaini!!

free header? right to Mignolet.  Free shot?  20 yards up the seats.... for as much as you have looked better today, this is the issue.  Supposed to be an aerial threat? nope.

I'll say this, the kids from United have shown up

Rashford = speed
They have been since all the veterans got hurt, and there really is no reason for guys like fellaini, rooney, carrick to be starting at this point.  United looks better with the kids (including Mata, Herrera and Schneiderlin).  But LVG's infinite wisdom....

What a fun day.  ManU actually had some answers today and would have made it close, if not for a moment of magic.

Seeing ManU try to score 3 goals in one half has been funny.

Cant wait for De Gea to go to Madrid.

My ding on the Bayern/Real/Ajax/Liverpool/Milan teams is that you didn't really see the same sort of player movement across borders you do now.  Or at least that's my impression.  Without looking I'll bet those teams were mostly made up of home-grown players?

ETA:  what retired said.
So who was the first big international transfer?

Navas has been good, not de gea good but that wouldnt be horrible

Congrats to Liverpool.  They were the better team over two legs.  And they have a coach that seems to understand what needs to happen.

So a Liverpool-Dortmund final would be sweet
Hard to imagine us beating them over two games.  I think we need the one game matchup to have a chance plus we need another few months for Sturridge to shake off the cobwebs, he looks extremely rusty.

I'm liking the look of this team a lot when the midfield is set up with

Coutinho Firmino Lallana
Can Henderson

They need a 1a at forward (or 1b, depending on how you feel about Sturridge) to go with Sturridge (1b), Benteke and Origi, but there's a lot that looks right about the team in that setup.

Are you asking who was the first big player to move on a free transfer which is what Bosman allowed?

Players have been transfered between clubs for decades now.  I don't know how to compare a Zidane transfer with a transfer of a player like Alfredo Di Stefano.

If you are only interested in the top money transfers, here is a list

If Liverpool win the Europa League and get the ticket to next years UCL, does that mean the team who comes in 4th in the EPL goes to Europa next year?

More like "What player transfer started the huge international movement?" Y'all were talking about how different the game is now from the 70s and 80s regarding international player movement. Just wondering if there was a person it could be tied to. I understand the Bosman rule, but in my time following soccer, that's very rarely a major signing.

IIRC Denis Bergkamp to Arsenal was kind of a surprise as not many big-name players were moving to England at the time.

Are you saying free transfers are rare?  They number in the hundreds if not thousands world wide every year.

The wiki list I gave you should give you a feel for the big money tranfers but I should mention again that major players have been transfered for decades in the sport.   But the money in the 70's can't be compared to the money today.

It is no different in say the NBA or MLB.  Free agent signings today are so much bigger money wise than in the 70's and 80's but that does not mean the players are that much better.

Guardian says EPL would get five spots. If Liverpool wins Europa and Chelsea wins Champions League then the fourth place team would be out.

I do not believe so..it has it's own spot
Oh wow, you mean England could have 5 teams in the Champions League?  I did not know that was possible.  That will really make things easier to keep ahead of italy.

Come to think of it, did Spain do this already with 5 teams?

They are very rarely a big money signing. Check the edit.

Just wondering if there was a person we could point to that marked when the floodgates opened. The Tom Chambers of  European soccer if you will. Maybe there's no equivalency.

I don't think there is one big transfer everyone references as you're asking. Cruyff made a big move from Ajax to Barca in the 70s, Maradonna went from Boca to Barca to Napoli in the 80s. But it was more a change in Eurpean law that opened the floodgates. Before the EEC, EU and Boseman, most FAs in Europe had protectionist limits on foreign players.

I don't know if this year's Barca is the best of all time. But they sure as hell have the best fan:

I need me one of those!

No need to be such a jerk about it.  I honestly had no idea what you were asking, the sentence made absolutely no sense.

I did my best to try and answer your question but you can just #### yourself in the future, I certainly won't bother again.

I know. That's why I edited that sentence out but not before the post got quoted. My bad.

I would disagree that, as revised, the sentence made no sense.

yes, I understand what you meant much better now and I agree with it.  I have no idea why you felt the need to insult me when I was just trying to help.

Sorry for flipping out on you.

Valencia lost today to be the first Spanish team out of European competition. Of course they're coached by an Englishman and lost to another Spanish team, Sevilla...

Valencia really are terrible this year though. Waaaaay underperforming, even before Neville took over.

4/5&6    4/12&13

Wolfsburg v Real Madrid

Bayern München v Benfica

Barcelona v Atletico Madrid

PSG v Manchester City

Time to derail the Barça train.

Not a great draw for either team, although Barça will be the more pleased of the two. They probably wanted to avoid PSG and Bayern top 2 with Atlético third.

When is the next round? Godin is hurt for a few weeks.

I know people woudl like a Barca-Bayern final, but selfishly, I hope they play before then so we'll get to see them twice.
