Apparently, Akinfenwa won't join Wimbledon on League 1. He told Sky Sports after the game that he was "technically unemployed" and for employers to "hit him up on the WhatsApp". :lmao:

It got a bit dusty in here during the post-match celebrations.  I've been a long-distance supporter of this club for over 20 years and today's game ranks up there with the Dons' first competitive match and the playoff final in Manchester to win promotion to the Football League.  Wimbledon has been in the bottom half of League 2 for five seasons since then and there was a growing feeling that they'd found their level.  Money talks even in the lower divisions.  The Dons have the smallest ground in League 2 and one of the smaller payrolls.

Wimbledon was mid-table again through much of this season before going on a late-season run to finish 7th in the last playoff slot.  They stayed hot and won the playoff crap shoot.  Reaching the playoffs was huge, making it to Wembley was bigger and going up to League One is almost beyond comprehension.  I know the party line has always been that Franchise FC is a non-entity unworthy even of scorn but to draw level with MK after an implausible 14 year journey is a tremendous accomplishment for a club that restarted with nothing.

Well, it now looks as if Berlusconi is selling AC Milan to Chinese investors, while Inter (who Moratti just sold his majority stake to Thorir 2 years ago) is looking to sell 70% of club,  which  is now valued @  $700m; twice what it was 2 yrs ago.  This Asian money seems to be turning the Futbol world on its head; especially in Italy.  Player valuation by Chinese Super League is insane; & where Italy was once so resistant to any "oriundi" NT players, yet alone foreign ownership (i.e.-the Americans & Roma, circa 2011)...it now seems to be almost accepted practice, especially b/c "The Milan Clubs are doing it, so....  I dunno, it just seems to me that this Chinese infusion/incursion is really going to change European soccer as we know it, rather than just be a passing " fancy".  It's just so sudden.

Yes, the Chinese money in the game i reshaping things.  Mainly because oil money isn't expanding their ownership base.  Soon enough Wimbledon will be worth 500m GBP simply because they play football in England.

Akinfenwa had a good run with the Dons but Neil has to improve the squad to compete in L1.  Bayo is 34 and can't go 90 minutes.  Tom Elliott largely replaced him as a starter this year and plays a similar hold-up game and is better in the air.

There's been some speculation that Akinfenwa will move to pro wrestling after finishing his soccer career.

Wouldn't surprise me. He needs to do something in the public eye even after his career is up. I know he's done a lot of stuff with Spencer FC's Youtube channel.

oh... damn!

just remembered a dream I had over the weekend. I'm playing in an international game for the US- friendly, I think- and I get the ball on the right flank heading towards the opponents box. I pull a left-footed step over and push the ball down the field with my right, beating the defender so badly they turned into a little kid. I had to look around to make sure I wasn't in fact playing against little kids (I've had that dream before)- but no, just destroyed the guy that badly. I push the ball down towards the endline and zing in a dangerous cross, which gets cleared right back out to me. I'm outside the corner of the box, use the same left-footed step over and then do an elastico with the outside of my right foot which pulls the ball back on my left (and causes the defender to fall down). the elastico put the ball into perfect position for a left-footed shot which I hammer, bending and dipping into the upper left v. I'm waiting for the n'kono replay from my youth... but this time it goes in. in celebration, I do a cantona, but scream to the heavens instead of glare.

the whole Pulido kidnap story is just insane. Mexico.

just read this:

About 24 hours after he was kidnapped, Mexico star Alan Pulido found himself alone with one of his captors and saw his chance. He wrestled away the man's pistol and cellphone and dialed Mexico's emergency number.

Within minutes, he was free.

An official summary report of three calls to an emergency operator that was obtained by The Associated Press shows that the 25-year-old forward for Olympiakos, which is in the Greek league, threatened and beat his captor while on the phone demanding to be told where they were.

The dramatic account of derring-do shows that Pulido -- listed at 176 centimeters and 68 kilograms -- was the main actor in his own liberation, a contrast to initial official accounts of a rescue by police.

On a first call, with the kidnapper overpowered, Pulido peered out of a window and described the white two-story house with two cars, gray and red, parked in front.

In the next call, Pulido told the operator that state police had arrived outside. The operator told him to fire the pistol so they would know they were in the right spot, but Pulido said he had no bullets. He said police themselves were starting to shoot and described his shorts and tank top so they wouldn't confuse him with the now-unconscious captor.

Once police arrived, he made a third call to confirm with the operator that they were trustworthy.
he has to make a third freaking call because- you know- wtf knows if the policemen are trustworthy. mesko.

Rumor has it Liverpool vs Roma will take place at Busch Stadium on August 1st. Announcement on teams coming tomorrow.

AKA Two of my three favorite European clubs (Real Oviedo being the third)

My reaction.

Wait, what?  Are you sure?  I've heard nothing of this on any of the Associazione Sportiva Roma  blogs I frequent...not even a rumor.  Is this really a thing?  That would be righteous!  I thought this would be the first year that Roma Americana wouldn't tour the US....

I've seen it on a few St. Louis soccer websites and social media, so I'm still taking it with a grain of salt, but there's nothing else rumored.

I refuse to watch Pool play Roma on a baseball field unless you can assure me that Michael Bradley will score again.
I can only guarantee that he will score one goal before he dies. It may be in the MLS. It may be internationally. It may be while he's playing with his kids in the yard. He'll score again, bet your bottom dollar that, there'll be scores.

Di Matteo is an interesting hire at Villa.  He hasn't managed to stick around anywhere for very long at any stop in his career but that's true of a lot of guys these days . He has some experience in the English lower divisions with Franchise FC and WBA.  He won promotion with the Baggies in his only full season there but only lasted until February the following year.  It looks like he kept the West Brom squad mostly intact.  His only big money signing was Chilean defender Gonzalo Jara who ended up getting loaned out to Championship sides after Di Matteo was sacked.

I know Abramovich has gone through a ton of managers but having Di Matteo and Benitez in the second division is a nice bit of fun.

It's official! Liverpool vs Roma on August 1st at Busch stadium

I just realized how STL hooked Roma: St. Louis has a massive Bosnian population and they love them some Edin Dzeko.
...and Pjanic.  Man, the logistics will be mind boggling, but I would love to make this work.  This will be Totti's final season, & I would love to be able to bring my 9 yr old middle child/extreme Roma Ultra/unabashed Totti devotee to see him play live.  Personally, I couldn't care less...it's all for my son.  #GoFundKafka'sSon#

Here's the ticket info.

What's baffling to me is that, if you look at the seating chart, there's 16 sections for Liverpool supporters and just 2 for Roma.  With all the Bosnians, I would have thought there'd be more Roma sections.

As someone that will primarily be supporting Liverpool, though, I can live with it. Hoping to get in the Liverpool section. :excited:

Dislike.

...but Thank You very much for the ticket info...looking at your link, it seems as if the 2 Roma sections would be stationed as a proxy "Curva Sud"!  The only problem is, they colored the 2 said sections in Laziale Blue :wall:
