Johnny Baby with a proposal for a 48 team World Cup.  16 teams start the tourney placed in Groups.  The remaining 32 play one game knockouts for the right to be placed in a Group.

Zlatan doesnt blow out his birthday candles, they extinguish themselves out of respect.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ZLATAN

Getting more European teams in the World Cup, I assume.
Yeah, but thats like telling those "First-Four" teams that get eliminated before the NCAA tournament really starts, that they were part of the tournament.  Everyone knows better.

nightmare.

what sinn said, re march madness, but worse. 16 teams compete for 2+ years to try to get there, and then have a one-off game to get eliminated? terrible.

Eight five team groups would add 32 games to the tournament.  Twelve four team groups would add 24 more games in the group stages but would necessitate some weirdness with third place teams advancing to an extra round of knockouts.

Either way, that's an extra week of the calendar that's already full to bursting.  I don't see how they can expand more without cheapening the event but I'm sure that's of little concern to FIFA.

Awful idea. Can you imagine the bus parking to get to PKs these one-gamers would bring? It would be kinda fun to see an England or Netherlands team get CONCACAF'd by a Honduras or Panama.

I think they should have 6 qualifying groups with 209 teams. Each group can be of wildly varying sizes and they can play the whole thing down over the course of a couple months. Everyone wins! Think how many construction contracts would need to be awarded to build enough stadiums for this format.

Imagine the lengths teams ranked from 17-21 are going to go through to try and manipulate the FIFA rankings formula to try and get themselves inside of the top 16....

Yeah, the idea that Fifa would care about anything other than milking as much money out of the event as possible is pretty funny.

Still can't quite understand why the NCAA tournament has 68 teams. Some day someone will explain to me why we REALLY need to see the 7th place ACC or Big Ten team in there with an at-large bid....

Or the arguing that takes place about getting snubbed from the 68 team selection.

You could do a 48 team tournament with sixteen three-team groups and only group winners advancing to the knockouts.  It would keep the same number of total games in the tournament although 32 of the 48 teams would be two and out.

Or you could build a triangular field and have all three teams on the pitch at once.  They might as well try this in Qatar since it's already a farce and the stadiums won't be used again anyway.

81 - SUB: Karamoko Dembele replaces Jack Aitchison

=====================

Two fun tidbits.

1) yes, another Dembele!

2) Karamoko is a 13 year old who got subbed into a Celtic U20 game.  And he looks like he is ten years old

Its hard to resist the low-hanging fruit of Youri Djorkaeff, but that one was pretty well played out on the old board during world cup France '98.
