Prem ratings down 19% in England, almost as much here in the states. This mirrors the big current NFL ratings decline, which I'm unwilling to pass judgment on until the election is over, but I'm wondering if we aren't seeing signs of Peak TV Sports at least.
there is a combination of issues.  It is hard to get a read on any ratings information until Nielsen starts to factor in the cord cutters.

Stations like ESPN are dropping traditional subscribers very quickly.  ESPN is down to just 90 million subscribers now, which just a few years ago was sitting at 99 million.

This is happening across the board and Nielsen has not yet accounted for the large amounts of people accessing tv in different ways.

How long into the vernacular starts to not call it "TV" anymore?  10 years? 20 years? Never?
Until a better term comes up, I think it could be never.

Look at how many people still say "don't forget to tape the game!"  People have not used a VCR in a long time yet the term "taping" still exists even though the physical form of VCR tape does not apply any more in the digital storage world.

We went from TV to Cable TV to Satellite TV.  Now it will probably just transition into Streaming TV or Online TV, something like that.

I think it's a combo of things starting with a crappier on-field product with more talent dilution across teams in both leagues.

:confetti:

David Villa has been fantastic in MLS, scoring 40 goals in two seasons, and he told the Planet Fútbol Podcast he has started talks with NYCFC about extending his contract beyond its current end date of December 2017, when he’ll be 36.

Villa said he’s very happy in New York with his family, and he’s still playing at a high level. In fact, a source says that Villa has drawn interest recently from teams in Spain, England, China, Russia and Turkey. But all signs are pointing to him staying even longer in New York City.

Spain's all-time leading international goal scorer with 59, Villa trails New York Red Bulls forward Bradley Wright-Phillips by a goal for the 2016 MLS Golden Boot.

BTW, I'm going on Sunday.  Bought tickets that said they included a scarf for the kid.  We'll see if they come through.

Part of the issue in the UK is the price. Covering all of the Prem, and the cup comps, plus Champions League can run you around £200/month (about $250).

Granted, that covers a lot more than just the Prem, but if that's what you want, that price buys you many pints down at the pub. Leeds (Leeds! Leeds! Leeds!) and Liverpool has among the cheapest prices in England at £2.66-ish/pint. That's 75 pints per months, or 750 pints per season. Divide that with 38 league games, some euro footy, couple of cups, let's say 50 games.

That's 15 pints/game. Not a bad night out. (In London, you still get 10 pints/game)

AFCoN Groups

Group A: Gabon, Guinea-Bissau, Cameroon, Burkina Faso

Group B: Algeria, Zimbabwe, Senegal, Tunisia

Group C: Cote Ivoire, Togo, Morocco, Democratic Republic of Congo

Group D: Ghana, Uganda, Egypt, Mali

There's no obvious group of death and in the topsy turvy world of African football that could change by January.  Pot 3 was arguably stronger than pot 2, at least in terms of historical performance.  Traditional power Cameroon was drawn with the hosts Gabon.

Part of it has to be that the Premier League, after a once-in-a-generation season, is back to being very much a league of the traditional haves and have nots.

Yeah.

So two questions (aside from is this the right thread)

1) That was a sure goal that Bravo's cheating took away. Why wouldn't that be a penalty? They were just given a free kick. Sure, they go down to 10 men but that's an easy decision if it can save a goal.

2) if a team has made three subs and then s goalkeeper does a Bravo, does that mean one of the infield players has to become goalkeeper?

Yeah.

1.  It wasn't in the box.  Denial of a clear goal scoring opportunity is a red card anywhere on the field, but it's only a PK in the box.  I'm sure Suarez is rightly furious that a sure goal was taken away from him by the handball.  :pickle:

2.  Yup.  It has happened before at times.  I think Harry Kane had to play some GK in a Europa League game a few years back.  He .. struggled

Also, no idea if any way to check, but I wonder if yesterday was the most goals scored by Real Madrid with Ronaldo playing and none being scored by him.

1) "Denial of clear goal scoring opportunity" = red card, not a penalty.  In order to award a penalty, there has to be a foul in the penalty area.

2) Yes, but they give him gloves and a GK shirt

There are still six or seven "haves".  That's pretty competitive.
If you're not a fan of one of those teams, it's pretty damn boring though. Why would I spend a few precious hours of my weekend watching Chelsea or Man City paste some sad sack bottom feeder, each and every weekend?

Except fewer people are watching that too.
The big drop seems odd to me.  Viewership on something like that would tend to taper over time.

People watch the other teams because they have a local or historical connection. If you don't have that connection I suspect the overwhelming majority would pick a competitive team to follow.

UK EPL broadcast rights are split between Sky and BT Sport.  It's impossible to watch a live Premier League game on free TV.

As mentioned earlier, I would not read too much into the numbers themselves.  While there likely is a reduction, it is almost 100% certainty that the numbers are overstated because the ratings services are not factoring in the cord cutters who access the programs via methods that Nielsen does not yet track.

Portland has a must win tonight at home against Saprissa to advance to the CCL Quarter Finals. But they also have a near must win game this last MLS weekend to make the playoffs.  It will be interesting to see how Porter handles the lineups.  The MLS league game is Sunday so it might be enough time to go with a first team lineup for both games.

========================================================

Organizing the Copa America, the South American championship for national teams, in the United States threatens to open the floodgates. Or at least Conmebol and UEFA are talking about holding the finals of their biggest club championships in U.S. cities.First, there was talk of Conmebol turning the Libertadores Cup final into a single game and moving it to Miami in 2017The Brazilian daily Estadao reported that Conmebol was considering abandoning the two-leg final that has been used every year since the tournament's launch in 1960. Conmebol's reasons? An "economic solution," according to Estadao. Now, new UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has told the Associated Press he wants to adopt an "open bidding process" for the right to host the Champions League final. How open? He wouldn't mind the game being staged in New York."It might be an idea in future but we have to speak about it," Ceferin said. "To go from Portugal to Azerbaijan for example is almost the same or the same as if you go to New York. For the fans, it's no problem but we should see. It's a European competition so let's think about it."Travel between most of Europe and the United States -- first class all the way -- might not be a problem for the Slovenian Ceferin now that he is UEFA president, but for most Europeans it's still certainly shorter and more convenient to get from their home to, say, Cardiff, whose Millennium Stadium will host the 2017 final.Travel within South America isn't always as easy. Miami, a hub for travel to South America, may be convenient for many South American fans but no South American country is part of the U.S. Visa Waiver Program.SI.com's Grant Wahl reported that U.S. Soccer had no interest in green-lighting the Libertadores Cup final's move to Miami.U.S. Soccer should quickly squash the idea of UEFA opening up the bidding on the Champions League final to U.S. venues.

Dallas needed a draw tonight in Guatemala to advance to the CCL quarter finals.  They went down early 2-0 before coming back for a big 5-2 win.

This win continues Dallas's quest for the best ever season by an MLS team.  They already have the US Open Cup Championship and the advancement to the quarter finals in the CCL tucked away and this weekend they need a draw to win the Supporters Shield.

If they some how pick up the Supporters Shield and MLS Cup, the only trophy left would be to win the CCL next spring to get the clean sweep.

Pretty cool for an organization that puts player development well before spending any money on big name stars.

last year, the 8 CCL quarter finalists came from only 2 leagues.  Liga MX and MLS.

This year teams from 5 different leagues are in the quarter finals.

Vancouver plays NYR in one of the quarterfinal matches.

There's a rumor that Simeone will jump ship from Atlético to the Prem at the end of this season.  I honestly don't see why that would happen unless Arsenal part ways with Arsene, and that would be a poor stylistic match for that club.  Chelsea, City, United, and Liverpool all have new, high profile managers.  Poch isn't going anywhere unless Real cans Zizou, and aynthing else would be a step down financially IMO.  The Prem has deep pockets, but are Everton or 's pockets deeper than Atleti's?  It's simply a step down.  Probably stupid English media trying to stir some #### up and get clicks.

Now if Chelsea can Conte at the end of the season, I think there might be a chance.  More likely is that he ends up at Chelsea or PSG after the 17-18 season.

He is not going to Everton - it would be a huge step down, plus I think Everton are happy with Koeman.  Arsenal seems like the likely destination - maybe forcing Wenger out to get one of the top "younger" coaches - and move to a more dynamic pressing team that seems to be all the rage in the Prem these days.  Chelsea could step in to gazump the deal - as they have been known to do.  But, I wouldn't be shocked to see Arsenal do to Wenger what City did to Pellegrini.
