***Official Soccer Discussion Thread*** (6 Viewers)

The Club America Montreal game drew more than 1.7 million viewers. That is more than any EPL game has ever drawn in the US for viewers. The draw of Mexican soccer is so huge in the US.
MLS/US Soccer might be smart to start promoting/developing a US/Mexico rivalry at the club level. It's already a big deal at the NT level, and is a natural fit in terms of casual attention, but you don't hear too much about it at the MLS/Liga M level. Plus, they're signing more of our players these days and the Mexican league's quality is a more realistic stretch goal for MLS in the immediate future. Could be a thing in the near future.
I think so too.

It needs to happen organically.

One of the things holding it back was the huge gap between the two leagues. It was not that long ago that the Liga MX teams could start entire reserve teams on the road in MLS stadiums and win.

Now the gap has closed significantly. Liga MX teams start their top sides even at home and the games are much more competitive.

There is still a gap but hopefully in the next 5 years it will continue to close.

If you mean "organically" in a John ("The Juggler") Harkes sense, yeah. Don't fluff it up and look stupid.

But take advantage of the opportunities you've got to highlight the potential rivalry when they come up. Like Montreal being a 0-0 win away from taking down the continent's biggest club trophy. Haven't seen a word about it in terms of advertising or promotion.

I met a Sevilla fan yesterday and he is ecstatic about making the Europa final. He said he'd take that trophy over a top 4 finish if he had to choose, but still gunning for, let's call it, the poor man's double. Europa has been a crutch of an excuse for English teams. So annoying. The rest of the world deals with it just fine. As someone pointed out earlier. Playing Thursday and Sunday is the same as Wednesday and Saturday. ####, sometimes I play Monday, Wednesday, AND Friday. I love that we get to see the 3rd place - 8th place teams from all over the world compete against each other. Helps show where each league really stands.

Because of the unique nature of this game (3 countries involved), it will be the most watched game featuring an MLS team ever, by a long shot.

Adding up the Mexican, US and Canadian audiences will create a huge number of viewers.

I have seen plenty of adds for the second leg myself on Fox, Univision and MLS related sites. Fox is doing a wonderful job cross promoting stuff through their other sports. I have even seen MLS segments in the middle of a big UFC event.

In a short Soccernomics article yesterday, economist Stefan Szymanski concludes:
But now MLS starts to sound like a pyramid scheme. You can fund a loss-making enterprise from the entrance fees of new buyers for a while, but without making money, the only reason for doing this would be glory, not profits. Americans constantly tell me that owners of sport franchises in the US will insist on making money. If that really is the case, then I predict that MLS will collapse, and probably sooner rather than later.
So what is the MLS business model?

His overall point is probably correct, but some of his assumptions are pretty absurd. For instance, I have a hard time believing the game day stadium expenses exceed gameday revenue.

Edit: I'm pretty sure the "Wendy" in the comment section is an Andy alias

You make it sound like you and the spurs would rather play for top 4 than try for the trophy.

Isnt that Arsenal's m.o.?

None of you will dissuade me from enjoying Saints traveling to the stabby boondocks of eastern Europe this fall should they qualify for it. We need the exposure and the revenue, even if it means we'll finish 13th next year.

Napoli president Dilaurentiis said the same a year or two ago - claiming Europa is a net negative, fans hate it, clubs hate it, etc. Fans and clubs want trophies, but there's no shame in prioritizing qualification for a CL spot in your domestic league over advancing in Europa. The economics from last season roughly indicate all but a very few CL clubs earned more than Sevilla was paid for winning Europa, even most of the 3rd/4th group stage teams that failed to advance. You essentially have to lose all group stage games to earn less than the payout for the Europa Champion.

Ilkay Gundogan moving from BVB to Manchester United for 21M pounds. Contract to be signed this weekend per Sky Germany (?). How can these deals get signed before the transfer window opens?

Also dont know much about Gundogan other than people fans seem to like the move.

I did not read the article but I saw on Big Soccer that this guy was being ripped to shreds. I read that he was just making crap up entirely. I did not even bother to read since it appeared to be nothing more than a troll article.

There is enough wrong with MLS that people don't need to make things up to try and fit their agenda.

Before his back injury, Gundogan was one of the best two-way CMs in the world. Kind of like a less physically imposing Pogba.

I believe if the teams agree to the fee and the player agrees to the transfer and wages they could happen any time. Just cant be official until the window?

The other way is if his contract is up and not going to be extended he can agree on a free move. Vidic to Italy last season is one example.

Your last sentence is correct I think. Fabian Johnson signed with Gladbach months before the transfer window opened and it was because he was going to be out of contract that summer.

I think its the former and not the latter. He still has one year left and BVB dont want to lose him for nothing like they did Lewandowski by waiting until hes out of contract.

I know Van Gaal was looking at Strootman last summer to play this role.

Yeah, if there were a pre-contract, nobody would be talking about a $21 million transfer fee.

But teams can come to an agreement on a transfer at any time. It just can't take effect until the next window.

Anyone know a sports bar in Harrisonburg va that will show Spurs/Saints game tomorrow? Stuck here with no cable/internet...

It's been a long time since my undergrad days, but Yelp reveals that the Burg has a BW3 and a Twisted Kilt.

I'd wager that The Beanery would show it too. As near as I can tell all are on the Valley Mall side of 33.

Err. Just realized this is the soccer thread. No idea if they'll be open early.
went to capital ale house for dinner, they suggested bw3, but I don't think they'll be open. Did not realize you were a Duke. In town visiting my sister for Rockland Beerfest, but she is the assistant director of admissions for intl students so she is rarely home so she does not have cable or internet. Wimmen. Amirite?

Nice draw Spurs fans. I know how upset you guys would have been if you took all 3 points. Maybe next week you'll get the full goose egg.

Christo's going to join the Yellow Army next season. Come on you Hornets! Watford F.C.!
The last time they got promoted I think it was Jay DeMerit with the winning goal in a playoff against Leeds. I think he wore the armband for them a few times in the following couple of seasons.
