Couldn't have been a better draw for Atleti.  First game in the Bernabéu followed by a final Madrid derbi in the Calderón.  Real will still have to focus on the league whereas Atleti have CL to play for and that´s about it.  Both teams have some injuries outstanding, but Real seems a bit healthier at the moment.  CR7 really seems to get up for CL games, so he's the man to lock down IMO.  Hopefully Juanfran can get healthy in time to support that cause.

sad story out of Nigeria, where a man united supporters group lost up to 30 people while watching the game last night due to a transformer blowing up, losing a wire which then landed on the roof of the place they were watching.

Holy crap.

====================================

The guy arrested for the bombing of the Dortmund bus was found to have had bought a large number of so-called put options for shares of Borussia Dortmund. These would have entitled him to sell the 15,000 shares at a pre-determined price, which could have resulted in a substantial profit if their value had fallen in the meantime, prosecutors said.

"A significant share price drop could have been expected if a player had been seriously injured or even killed as a result of the attack," they said.
Reports I read today say he booked a room in the hotel the team uses for home games. He booked the room on the dates for both legs before the home/away ties were scheduled. He borrowed money used to buy the puts, and made the trade in an online account  the day of the attack using the hotel's wifi. The purchase of 15 thousand put option contracts was a highly unique trade that drew attention almost immediately from German securities officials. 28 year old German/Russian. If the stock had significantly collapsed (which seems highly unlikely) he could have made several million euros.  Just an absolutely insane criminal plot. It's like something one of the teenage posters from the trump thread would concoct.

Jesus, things are going badly in Philly this year.

Barely anyone showed up to the game today (it had to have been one of the lowest in stadium's attendances ever for Philly) and then those die hards were treated to watching Philly blow a 3 goal lead.  Yikes........

===============================

Mexican national team forward Chicharito has seen in recent weeks his conversations with Los Angeles FC make “significant process” according to a league source. The expansion side, ready to enter the league in 2018, has been talking with the current Bayer Leverkusen forward for months about the possibility of a transfer.

The source said that the deal for Chicharito would make him the “highest salaried player in MLS history,” a deal that could potentially reach in excess of $10 million per season.

sad for Zlatan but this opens the door for more pace running at defenders with Rashford, Martial and Mkhi.  Lingard could be important as well.  Hopefully it doesnt mean more Rooney.  Unfortunately Rojo is hurt too.  Blind had a solid game, not sure when Smalling or Jones gets back.  will be needed.

Watched the first half (was camping so didnt see the game) late yesterday and Rooney, aside from the goal was horrible.  More complaints at the ref then good play.  The run by Martial and the pass by Herrera were pinpoint perfect.  From started horribly, backwards passes, fould all over the defensive half, getting beat in the air by Keane a couple times, give aways and easily dispossessed.  Late in the half he did have some solid defensive headers and tackles.  Did have a solid header on goal too.  Still needs to be better if I have to listen to announcers gush over how good he is and what a threat he is (he's not).  But a comfortable win.  Have to see Pogba's status for the Derby on Thursday.  Huge game.

btw... I really enjoyed the FA cup games over the weekend, but continue to be astonished at how poorly such a good player plays in big games... looking at you, ozil.

any idea what is going on?

From a far I have loved what Earnie has done off the field to build the infrastructure but the on field product is severely lacking.  Do they simply not have the funds needed to compete from ownership or is it more of just poor player picking judgement?

A little of both I'm guessing (just based on some random reading), but I'm also not watching that closely.

The biggest thing to me right now is their back four flat out stink.  Rosenberry didn't even play last game.  I was too busy with kids' soccer to catch the Montreal game, but watching the highlights it was the same old disjointed mess in the back.

Sapong has been the one bright spot - I felt like he was pretty underwhelming last year, but he's been pretty darn good to start this year.  They brought in Jay Simpson in the off-season, who took Sapong's job, but now Sapong is back in the starting 11 and playing great with 4 goals + 1 assist.

Having Newcastle back is great, getting Brighton in makes for another South Coast Derby but LeedsLeedsLeeds would have made it a promotion trifecta. They're in trouble, though. Fulham, damn.

Actually not bad as far as salaries go... In the sports world some are low.  But would any of us on this board turn down the lowest rate on the list to play in MLS?  I saw $53,000.
53k is the league minimum and is reserved for roster spots 25-28 (basically the guys who don't play in MLS much and shuttle back and forth to USL teams to get playing time).

Twellman always cautions to take these numbers with a grain of salt.  He has indicated in the past the the union is not providing all the details in terms of full compensation.

 As an example he said there is no way Piatti is only making $450k in total comp.

But he does not give any real info to base this on.

Eintracht Frankfurt beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 6-5 in penalties (after 1-1 aet) to advance to the DFB Pokal final.

Bayern v Dortmund tomorrow for the other slot.

Chelsea is also involved in providing information to the police.  Latest updates from Daily Mail says this all revolves around Marseilles and players bought and sold from/to Marseilles.

If that is truly the case, then White Hart Lane will be involved soon since Spurs bought N'Koudou for 11mil from Marseilles last summer.  I doubt Tottenham or Chelsea did anything wrong, but I'm sure those dirty french were trying to hide proceeds and dodge taxes.  I'm still unclear what led to the Newcastle and West Ham arrests, unless they made buys/sells 'off the books' to help Marseilles avoid taxes.

After seeing what the bottom half of the EPL gets for shirt sponsorships (hint...LA makes more than 8-9 EPL teams), it's no wonder everyone wants into MLS.  More incredibly to me, I had no idea most of the EPL shirt sponsorship money was gambling sites.  In that regard, the MLS sponsorships are of a much higher quality.

That is an interesting list.  The lower half is MUCH lower than I would have guessed.  But the separation of teams in the lower half of the EPL with leagues like MLS comes down to the massive difference in TV money.

While MLS has closed the revenue gap on the big leagues in almost every possible category, the TV revenue disparity continues to widen.

Alright, this is just straight cool.  Cool design.  Will be cool atmosphere.  And cool that's is privately funded.

oh that is awesome looking.  First picture made me immediately think of Bombonera and then later it said that was an influence.  I hope it gets what ever approval it needs from the Government.

Hope they can find a way to get grass in there.

hopefully the get the downward urine-flow, tray to tray, the way they do at bombonera.

I don't love the look, but pretty brilliant solution for more capacity when there's nowhere to build "out". looks like one of those work chests with the folding up and out trays.
