@BrianSciaretta: I am hearing that S####horpe's American midfielder Duane Holmes is likely moving to Derby County today. Solid move for the Georgia native. #USMNT

From the BBC live feed, Poch on transfers:

It looks like being a whole summer without one single signing for Tottenham, but Mauricio Pochettino isn't troubled.

"We have a very good squad, we have very good players and it is not easy to add players that improve that," he said.

"And of course we didn’t sell players and with 25 players in the squad it’s difficult to add players. It’s not add because we need to add because it’s fashionable to sign players, it’s because if you really need to or not. And then if you can achieve your target or not.

"Our targets are always in the same level of Real Madrid or Manchester United or Manchester City, but for different circumstances we cannot achieve that. But, I am not worried, I am not sad, I am so happy."

Would be better if Poch added at the end, “Really, I am really very happy. Not sad, no, not worried at all. I’m really very very happy.”

My favorite Poch quote from today:

#thfc Pochettino: "I am with full energy, I am fitter than last season because I was thinking if a player involved in the World Cup arrives not fit then I have a possibility to play..."

Tottenham would be the first PL club to make no signings in a summer window since it was introduced in 2003. The closest to no signings was that first summer - Leeds only signed Jody Morris for free. Stat courtesy of @garyjacob and @BillEdgarTimes

United fans comment on the window:

Manchester United

United released the club's official app this week. What is this, 2008? Perhaps we should think of it like a new signing.

Not much happening for United on deadline day so far. Reports that the club fluffed an approach for Diego Godin is so United under Ed Woodward circa 2013. Remember that summer, when the club faxed an offer for every player in Europe and then ended up with Marouane Fellaini?

A disastrous season followed. Mourinho has already predicted something similar this year. Let's hope he's wrong.

Everton are hoping to sign Marcos Rojo from Manchester United for £22million before the transfer window closes.

The permanent deal for the 28-year-old Argentinean defender could go down to the wire once Everton are finalised their moves for the Barcelona pair Yerry Mina and Andre Gomes.

What happened before 2003?  Could you sign any player at any time?
When was the transfer window first introduced?

Transfer windows had been in operation in various parts of the world in different guises, but the principle was only formally adopted by European football in 2002, when UEFA recommended harmonised registration periods across the continent beginning from the 2002-03 season.

Two summers in a row that Everton have spent a ton of money and brought in a ton of players.  Can't fault them for having ambition.  They are desperately trying to make it a Big 7 again.

All that being said, I don't really see any signings that stand out.  Maybe Richarlison? I guess Mina would be solid.  If they get the Zouma loan done, that would be nice.  Mina/Zouma is certainly better than what they had.

It's the Ev, it's what they do nowadays, finally getting some money and throwing it at anything shiny. It's like these lottery winners that are broke within a couple of years.

Richarlison for 50m is such an Ev move...

Imagine competing in the same league as Manchester City while "hoping to sign" Marcos Rojo.  It's like watching your friend tear into a prime tomahawk ribeye and saying, "that's OK, I'm hoping to be able to pick up a Whopper Jr. on the way home."

Telegraph:

Here's a three-part summary of how Diego Godin to Manchester United became a thing, and then quickly stopped being a thing.

Kaveh Solhekol✔@SkyKaveh

1/3 Diego Godin's agent approached Manchester United this week when the team was in Cagliari, saying the player was keen to come to Old Trafford and a deal could be done, so United made an offer for the agent to take to the Atletico board.

2/3 Within hours, Godin had signed a new contract on improved terms at Atletico Madrid (€7.5m net).

3/3 Whilst José Mourinho would have been keen to sign the defender, the manager believes that the desire on the agent's part was always to leverage the situation to get a new contract for Godin.

Yerry Mina done for the Ev as well. 30m, with a buy back clause.

So, Barca tripled their money in 7 months (4 starts), and if he does well they can immediately recall him and sell to someone else.

Solid Ev business that!

This is the Ed Woodward effect.  Since SAF and David Gill (who doesnt get enough credit for his work) left, every player worth anything has been able to leverage United for more money at their current club.  Every player gets linked to United, their transfer business is shambolic, last minute and public.  Woodward is a marketing guy.  Great at building the brand, getting the sponsors, and bringing in money.  He is absolutely terrible at transfers, negotiating player deals and gets used by agents and other teams.

He needs to be solely on the business side and a true football guy needs to be brought in for transfers and player recruitment.

No last minute signings for United, which would be a better deadline day then the one they overpaid for Fellaini....

except they resigned him a couple weeks ago instead of today

I think this is very true. Woodward is getting a lot of crap, but I think it is deserved. Maybe a DoF is needed?

Arsenal starting the season with CB options of Mustafi, Sokratis, Rod Holding, and Mavropanos (I suppose Monreal could play in a pinch, but they're playing four at the back).

"It's a bold strategy, Cotton ..."

It also seems that Mourinho is starting to hurt transfer policy because he's devolved into such a miserable guy to play for.  Man management used to be TSO's strength.  Those Chelsea and Inter teams LOVED him.  But Real broke him and he's never been the same.

Don't know much about him, other than Barca fans rejoicing on twitter that he's leaving.

Really hope Andre Gomes gets his career back on track at Everton. Hugely talented but mentally fragile and completely lost his way at Barça. Fresh start is exactly what he needs and he can be a class player if he gets his head right.
awesome...

He doesn't seem to be helping himself these days.  Jose and Woodward seem to be such a bad combo.  A true DoF would seemingly help things.  Rapidly becoming Arsenal, a team happy to be in the top 4 and round of 16 CL....

Way too much money for that to happen IMO.

Now for a nervous wait for another 22 days until the outgoing window closes.

Any of the top 6 could be in danger if a big European club turns the head of one of their top players.

I feel for the top teams.  To keep up and challenge for the title, it's becoming insanely expensive.  I think Liverpool fans have been a bit spoiled because they've had some massive outgoings that make it feel like a lot of money has been spent, when a lot really hasn't.

United have a net spend of like 500M over the last 4-5 years. When that's not enough to compete...I mean what are you gonna do?  That's an insane amount of money...

I've been wondering what's going to happen.  I mean, what if Real Madrid have just been waiting and now splash out a 200M dollar bid for Hazard/Kane/Salah/Eriksen.  You'd imagine that the PL teams would resist, but players have a lot of power.
