The team with the largest payroll in MLS, Toronto, is almost mathematically eliminated from the playoffs.  They are 9 points out of the last spot with only 5 games to play.

To give an idea how egregious this is Toronto spent 2.5 times as much as Atlanta and almost 4 times as much compared to NY Red Bull.

All that money is pretty much spent on those three guys though, right? Probably payed a buck fifty for their defense.

kind of but it is still egregious.

Even if you remove the top paid 3 DP's (Giovinco, Altidore and Bradley), their payroll is still over $10 million which is more than 13 teams and is still around $2.5 million MORE than Red Bull is spending.

The USL, with 3 divisions now, will re-brand using the English naming convention.

USL: The Championship (Div 2)

USL: League 1 (Div 3)

USL: League 2 (Div 4)

=======

The re-brand will take place in mid November

Speaking of Milner... was he a midfield terror in his pre-Liverpool career?  It seems like ever game now he not only wins a half-dozen tackles but leaves the other guy in a heap at least once or twice.  I don't remember him well enough from his time at City to know if it's a new thing or not, but he's not someone you'd enjoy playing against these days.

I am actually kinda excited about the local team dropping to Div 3.... hopefully they can go back to their own "stadium" now - the minor league baseball stadium they play in now to meet the Div 2 rules stinks.

Our neighboring state of West Virginia has very thoughtfully legalized sports betting as of Sept. 1 and a couple of us are headed to Charles Town in a few weeks to bet the Prem. As we have seen, I am a terrible prognosticator of games so I'll be turning to this board for advice as the day draws nigh.

Is the USL going to absorb the NPSL  or are they still on their own? What tier would they be?

I can't figure out how or where the NPSL is fitting in.  Being absorbed into USL makes too much sense so I expect in true US Soccer fashion there will be infighting.

Stating the obvious, but without promotion and relegation what difference does it make what they call the leagues.
The USL is implementing promotion relegation starting next season.  I do not know the exact form it will take and it will likely be limited at the start but they are at least going to experiment.

well ok then- all  good!

eta: when did they announce that? not that I'm tapped into lower level US leagues, but first I've heard about it- in here or elsewhere...

This may turn into the worst season United has had in a long time (even with Moyes, LVG recently).

Watching your 2 bitterest rivals battle for the EPL title and maybe even the CL title
Out of the League Cup
Real danger of missing the top 4
Maybe even finishing behind Arsenal

When your hopes lie with rd of 16 CL and the FA Cup we really should just hire Wenger as manager....

Union beat Sporting KC with the B team on Sunday in wet Chester PA as Curtain rested guys for the US Open cup for Tomorrow night (On ESPN 8PM) against HOU. Seldom used bench warmer Jay Simpson got the brace and John McCarthy making his campaign Debut behind Andre Blake got the shutout. Also the Union have their highest ratings for players in a FIFA game yet this year. Haris is a 76 and Bedoya a 75 Blake a 75-74 and Accam is a 71. Most I remember of Union players being ranked that high.

I cant imagine how annoying it must be to play for Mourinho, especially for a dude like Pogba. Not saying he's been consistently great for United, but it must be so irritating to win a world cup and then come back to your club and get constantly needled by the manager. Gonna be pretty hilarious when they let a 55 year old manager (who will likely be gone in the next 2 years no matter what happens) chase away a 25 year old world cup winner. Dude is gonna go somewhere else and play like a man possessed once he doesn't have some little Portuguese bus-parker throwing shade at him all day long.

Can't wait. QPR is looking for a midfielder.

Private to German soccer fans: I hate to break it to you, but the professional sport is about making money for the owners.  Sorry.
We need to do something about that. I'll bring it up at the next Democratic Socialists' meeting. After we legalize weed and establish a modern health care system, we'll imprison the owners and confiscate their teams.

All to often it looks like they are just going through the motions, trying to stay in their lane and not make a mistake.  No heart, no passion, no creativity.  It all seems very stifled.

Jose has won everywhere he went so you give him the benefit of the doubt, but I don't see the performances and on field product getting better.

At least United can now concentrate on coming in 4th in league play.

Also, looks like Mou and Pogba had a bit of a dust up at training this morning.  I could care less about the league cup (well, at least until the semi-final rounds) but ffs with the amount of talent on United the seemingly unlimited bankroll to bring in players, losing to the likes of Brighton and Derby (at home) is pretty inexcusable.  I can see the draw with Wolves as they are really in decent form and losing to Spurs isn't that discouraging, but holy crap United are a terrible team to follow right now.

Never really a destroyer but considered a true two-way midfielder who defitely defended from even his latest Newcastle days and into his stretch as the star at Villa. He came up at Tyneside as a 17 year-old flair winger, but he added graft and bite really quickly.
