Back to being a season ticket holder as of this morning. Less than 20 quid a game for what is a pretty good seat and Championship football is good value as far as I'm concerned

Bundesliga 1 Relegation playoff - Match 1
Hamburger SV 1-0 Hertha Berlin

Bundesliga 2 Relegation playoff - Match 1
Dynamo Dresden 0-0 Kaiserslautern
Just to follow up.
BL1 playoff, Match 2, Hertha Berlin 2-0 Hamburg.  Berlin stay in BL1, Hamburg stay in BL2

BL2 playoff, Match 2, Kaiserslautern 2-0 Dresden.  Kaiserslautern earn promotion to BL2, Dresden drops to BL3

A 3rd division team in the quarter finals!

====================

U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals:

Sacramento (USLC) at LA Galaxy, June 21

NYCFC at Red Bulls, June 22

Omaha (USLL1) at Kansas City, June 22

Nashville at Orlando, June 29

Aston Villa splashing cash early on with Kamara and now Diego Carlos. We’ll see if they’re putting together a cohesive squad or an Everton soon enough.

69% of all Champions League Final appearances (93/134), and 81% of all CL titles (54/67), come from just 12 teams, who have each appeared in a final at least three times.

Who are they and how many times has each team made the finals?

Can you name the three teams that have a losing record in their 3+ finals appearances?  Which of the three appeared three times without a win?

Which two teams, not on the list above, have appeared in exactly two finals and won it twice?

OK, trying this off the top of my head

Real Madrid, Benfica, AC Milan, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Manchester United, Ajax, Inter Milan,  Juventus, Dortmund,  Frankfurt

Dortmund, Juventus,  Frankfurt (0-3)

Chelsea, Gladbach

Not sure about Frankfurt, but I know they lost at least one final to the DiStefano Madrid team.  I also can only remember two Dortmund finals, so I’m guessing they made a third.  Those Gladbach/Nottingham Forrest 70s years are tough without googling.

10/12 (not Dortmund, not Frankfurt)

1/3 (not Dortmund, not Frankfurt)

0/2 (Chelsea are 2/3)

Chelsea could be part of the first group, having appeared in three finals and won 2.

I think Atletico Madrid are 0-3 in finals. Porto are 2-0 in the Champions League era, but they may have played in one back in the day that I don't know about.

Yep, Chelsea are the 11th team with 3+ appearances.

Yep, Porto are one of the two who've played twice and won twice.

Yep, Atletico is the 12th team with 3+ finals, and is one of the teams (along with Juve, already named) that have played 3+ and have a losing record.

Still missing one of the teams with 3+ appearances and a losing record, and one of the teams that is 2-0 in finals.

Hint for the first team:  both Juventus and this team are 2-7, having made nine finals appearances.

Hint for the second team:  you'll need to try 'n rough this one out -- it's not an obvious team from a 2022 POV.

Oh, this one is Nottingham Forest right? They won two in a row sometime before I was born
try n' rough, Brian Clough

Correct, Nottingham Forest in 1979 and 1980 -- part of a Liverpool, Liverpool, Forest, Forest, Liverpool, Aston Villa six-year run for English teams.

Love this.  Monster crowds for two hours despite the loss last night.

Each of the last few seasons has been incredible.  2018 was the unexpected CL final.  2019 was the fight to the death with City and the CL win.  2020 and the first title in 30 years.  2021 they go 3-1-8 in the new year with half the team out, then close 8-2-0 with Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams in central defense to make the CL this year.  And now the Cup double, fight to the death with City II, and another CL final appearance.

Golden times.  The Big Red Machine of my youth, DC United's run as a young adult, and now this.  Lived a lucky sporting life.

Charlotte FC fires Ramirez

I still don’t follow MLS too closely (hard for me when I don’t have a favorite team) but is this a little rash?
(I follow the league but not real closely.)

Initial reactions I read online said it was quite rash.

Expansion team hovering near a playoff position.   A loss at Seattle 2-1 was right before the sacking.  Seattle is traditionally a powerhouse, so losing there is the final nail?  Doesn't make sense to me.

He's (rightly) criticized the roster construction and David Tepper just seems every bit the image of a thin-skinned multibillionaire. His organization that runs FC and the Panthers has also had a lot of turnover in the front office recently.

As a coach he is OK. Pretty likable and seemed a straight shooter. Tried to play a possession oriented approach not unlike his somewhat doppleganger Pep, but the team has a pretty weak midfield. Didn't help that Charlotte sold their most talented MF a couple of weeks before the season starts. As a result, the team wins points based on having a really good keeper (Kahlina) and some impressive interplay among the forwards (Swiderski, Bender, and Shinyashiki).

There is room to criticize the tactics, but not even close to enough to sack the coach. Particularly with the team doing much better than expectations and being among the league leaders in attendance.

Tepper seems like a clown and is also running the Panthers very poorly. Glad he opened the checkbook for a team, but he really needs to let other people run the day-to-day.

with an answer like this below I can only come to one of two conclusions.

1) Something happened off the field

2) Imcompetance in the front office

==========================

Charlotte FC's Sporting Director Zoran Krneta on the club firing Miguel Angel Ramirez after 14 games: "There's not much point to speculate what exactly happened. I don’t want to go into details. It’s not going to help anybody. ... We wanted to change direction, that's it. That's all I can say."

What I’ve come to understand regarding Charlotte FC firing Miguel Angel Ramirez is that a Designated Player refused to play for the club after the international break if MAR was still in charge. This provides context on Zoran’s statement “we had no choice, we had to do it.”

This is rash. There has to be something more to this. Like a Petr Nowak at Union like a decade ago type issue going on here. If you don't know about that incident look it up. PN basically physically and mentally abused the players. There was also rumors he got take from one of the Union scouts for purchasing South American Players from specific countries as PN was also the Technical Director as well.

So this seems rash unless there is behind the scenes issues we don't know about yet.

does anybody know more about why Lew wants out of Bayern?

Contract is out soon and he's dominated Domestically. Bayern has struggled in the CCL and maybe he wants to go somewhere he could win the CCL sooner then later. He's getting up there in age and is 1 1/2 months younger then me as we're both 34 this summer. So you can see why he might want to try something new.

It's a pipe dream but Lewandowski is the type of Striker Milan could use right now but they don't have the money nor do I think they'd go for an older player like him. If he was in his young 2Os Id say there was a chance to get him.

It really depends on the player. If this was say a Messi/Ibra or back in the day Totti/Maldini and this happened I'd say yeah you side with the player. But in MLS for a DP? Your DP better be one of the top stars in the league for that to happen. If not just tell the player suck it up butter cup or we'll transfer you but until then you're suspended without pay.

Didn't see the initial article but Milan's Ivan Gazidis who use to run Arsenal had some choice words about the Super League

TTLTR Version: Basically he says the EPL is a Super League already and the league was viewed quite differently in Italy then England. Saying the English clubs were the bigger pushes for creating the league. Inter and Milan only joined do to financial reasons and nothing. He was against it at Arsenal as well he says. Also says if the EPL continues to have the power they do in UEFA he fears the worse for soccer eventually. Goes after FFP but too many loopholes to work the way it was intended right now. He then goes on to praise the job Elliot the owners of Milan and everyone has done to get the club financials in good health again and how big winning the League was this year despite everything.

Milan chief executive Ivan Gazidis said he fears for the future of football given the strength of the Premier League. The director told the Guardian: “Look, the real Super League is the Premier League which has a global audience and is moving away from other European leagues. If we do nothing that will be the future of football.

“I’ve lived in that bubble and the Premier League has done a fantastic job. But the Super League proposal was viewed very differently in Italy than England.”

One of the main criticisms of the Super League was the fact it was sold as a closed competition which would have prevented some of the more romantic stories in European football over recent seasons which saw some of the so-called smaller clubs qualify for the Champions League.

Gazidis added: “Atalanta is a wonderful story. Leicester City is a fantastic story. Our tough choice at Milan was simply to be in [a Super League] or not to be in it. We had to make the responsible choice for the club. Milan was not driving this train.

“At Arsenal I was vehemently opposed to the Super League, and blocked it, because the Premier League is completely ascendant. Pressure is being generated in Europe because they will not be able to compete with the Premier League.

“It’s not enough to say: ‘A Super League is bad so let’s continue as we were.’ If we do, these tensions and pressures will only grow. We need to talk about it. The most important thing is to have a sustainable model for European football.

“Financial fair play is a step in that direction but it’s not completely effective. We need collectively to think responsibly about football’s future.

“A future dominated by the Premier League globally is fine if you live in England. But the rest of Europe needs a more positive vision.”

Gazidis also praised the work Milan have done in going from near bankruptcy in 2018 to Scudetto winners in 2022 – and said other clubs should use their journey as blueprint to success. He said: “I noticed, not just in Italy, but football in general, the great narrative of exceptionalism.

“The idea that this new thing won’t work here. It happened in England when Arsene [Wenger] was buying French players and people said: ‘They won’t cope on a rainy night in Stoke.’

“That exists in Italy. People said: ‘You can’t construct a young team like this in Italy.’ The expression they use is la maglia è pesante – the shirt is heavy.

“It means this is Milan and you’re playing in San Siro with so many expectations on your back. How can a young person do that? We’ve done almost everything in a way people told us was impossible in Italy.”

I've seen speculation he is the one.

#9s seem to rarely like this type of system, but he has looked pretty tired at times to me. Game against Vancouver and it was clear how much more energy the attack had after he came off. Rios scored quickly.

Second time there has been some drama with him this year.

Oh darn, United has announced that Pogba has officially left the club.

Oh darn, United has announced that Lingard has officially left the club.

Pogba has all the talent in the world but he doesn't fit in the EPL.  He is inconsistent and you never know what you will get from game to game. His agent (RIP) was also a major issue.  Pogba was not someone to build around and probably should have been sold a few years ago.  To be fair to him, his return did come with unrealistic expectations.  I believe his stats lined up with his time at Juve, but United fans expected more due to his price tag and his return "home".  Did he have his moments? Yes.   Was he a bust?  No, it just didn't work out.

Lingard is another example of someone who should have left years ago.  He did produce some great moments but he was never good enough for a team challenging for titles.  The loyalty to an academy player was over the top and he was always treated like he was young and could improve.  He'll be 30 in Dec.    As teams packed it in vs United, it exposed his lack of vision.  His effort was excellent but he needed to learn to work smarter not harder.  He would make any mid table team better but will not put a challenger over the top.  His wage demands may keep him out until he humbles himself.

Nothing more he can do domestically, Bayern seem a bit off being able to do anything in the CL, maybe wants to try something new

not sure, but he seemed pretty bitter saying no way he plays there ever again.

As others have mentioned, I think he wants a new experience.  He's won all he can in Munich.  His contract runs through next season, and maybe they did low ball him on the extension.

thanks guys. I figured he wanted new challenges, but the media I've been skimming keeps inferring it was contentious. thought it was something more than just the contract dispute.

Redbird has bought Milan for $1.3B with Elliot keeping 3O% and if a stadium is built will receive another payday for that. Gerry Cardinale the owner of the Company based in NYC USA is a Philadelphia Suburbs native so I got some local ties to the new owner here.

Ukraine beat Scotland yesterday 3-1 in World Cup qualifying.

Ukraine meet Wales on June 5th, with the winner advancing to the finals.

Mata joins the exodus.  He is one I wouldn't have minded if he stayed and am ok with him leaving.  Proper professional, still good on the ball.  Often left out by Ole and his inability to rotate, and usually played out of position in his time at United.  Good luck Juan.

Pogba, Lingard, Mata, Grant, Matic, Cavani all gone.  Saves almost £1M per week in wages.

Up next, hopefully: Pereirra and Jones.

Other potential departures: Telles, AWB, Martial, Bailley

To bad on Martial and Bailley, both have the potential to be class.

I didn't feel like he knew the game terribly well- but well enough. and I still loved his pacing and calls- has a great sense of when to shut up, when to defer to color commentator... key for a play by play guy.

I'm sure we'll get that clown they tried to foist on us for that WC a couple cycles ago... american super genius.

When I am watching, sometimes my daughter raises her nose out of her book and utters some of the few words she will say all day, like "is that the guy from Ted Lasso?" before lowering her head again.

Peter Drury (widely regarded as the best English play-by-play announcer) will be replacing Arlo.

I realize that it's mostly only the last resort of qualifying but Holland thrashed Belgium in Nation's League and look to be a tough out in November. They've paired up Nathan Ake with Virgil in back, De Jong might have been the best middie on the pitch and Memphis had a brace, the second of which was pretty sweet.
