I was a big fan of the fro at Everton- where he played a similar role to what he's doing now... just off/behind the forwards.

He was never mr skill- but he has enough to do the job if he's in the right place. again- for me it's more about what his positioning is doing for the overall team shape than what he's doing individually. that said- with a healthy RVP or in form Falcao, I would prefer Rooney slotting back in the role Fellaini's been playing. rooney seems to get a isolated a bit with this formation and tbh is as much a threat in the air as Fellaini..

OK, Man U fans. Raise your hands if you predicted that Young, Carrick, Fellaini, and Herrera would be key cogs in your rotation while Di Maria, Facao, and RVP (and Luke Shaw, I guess) would be afterthoughts.

Gotta give Butthead credit. Took him a while, but he makes tough decisions like a real big boy manager.
I've eaten crow on Young - never would have thought he would play a key role. I expected Carrick and Herrera to play important roles but never would imagine moreso than ADM, Falcao and RVP. I'm also kind of shocked that Valencia and Blind have been the LB/RB. It looks like Rafael is gone and LVG will need a new RB because I don't think Valencia is the long-term answer.

I've had faith that LvG is a good manager and I'm not sure if he didn't luck in to a side that caught fire at the right time. I don't see this current side (even with it's recent run) challenging for the title next year. I think the defense in particular need some changes - I'm not a believer in Smalling or Jones but I could see giving one or both of them more time to mature if Hummels is brought in to anchor the defense.

It will also be interesting to see if he will keep Rooney as a lone striker next year - I've never thought that was his best position. Always saw his as the 2nd forward in a 4-4-2 - so LvG will have to decide what to do with him if he sticks with 4-2-3-1 most of the time. He could play the middle of the 3 but I think he's lost a step to play on the wing and he's needed in front of goal IMO.

Now - nothing is settled but they look good for top-4 now which is a huge relief for most United fans.
I agree with most of this. Rooney is more active and just as good in front of goal as RVP and Falcao so I am not surprised he is doing well there. Falcao hasnt settled in and RVP is ready to move on. He hasnt looked good since his diving header at the WC. Although I think what we may see happen next season is Rooney drops into the Fellaini roll and another striker is brought in. Fellaini is dropped to the bench. Lets be honest here though, Fellaini is getting too much credit. Vs Pool and Tottenham he put in a good half and a bad half in each. vs AV he was terrible. Vs City he had 1 good play (the goal which Hart should have saved) and several terrible plays. He even passed the ball straight out of bounds. He has more fouls then good plays. BUT, the team is winning and looking good so sitting him is the wrong choice as well.

Young keeping ADM out of the lineup is surprising. Carrick, Herrera and Mata are not surprising. Mata on the wing is actually along with Blind and Valencia on the outsides. I am not sure why Rafael is out of favor but its working.

The best part with this is that outside of Blind and Herrera its the team Moyes used to finish 7th. LVG has already surpassed last season's point total and looks like United again. Hopefully thats the last we hear about this?

****

Great win yesterday, Carrick is supposed to be fit for Chelsea next weekend so lets hope the roll continues. Even if United win out I do not think they will catch Chelsea but that means at least a 2nd place finish.
re: Fallaini... when he's pushed up higher, United's team shape turns into something title-contenderish- regardless of his gaffes, his positive play makes a difference- but less than the team shape. that said, I thought he was really good on the day- caused all kinds of problems for City's defense and seemed to totally confuse Yaya.

Carrick and Herrera do a fantastic job defensively- thought they shut down City's MF. And they have enough quality going forward to do the job. Carrick in particular seems to always find the most dangerous ball forward or switching field. And their hard work seems to allow Mata room to operate where he does better- moving forward in the little spaces in the MF and behind the forwards.

Young- wow. best game I think I've seen him play start to finish. Seems like he and the rest of the players have finally figured out what their roles are- they don't have to be astonishing out there, just play their role.

I'm interested in wth is happening to City.
Fellaini has been winning more headers and has had good movement of late but between his constant fouls and more marginal then excellent play he still has a long way to go IMO. But yes he is causing problems for opponents and the lineup they have now is doing an excellent job. I wouldnt want to take him out. Fortunately he has helped provide the balance LVG needed, unfortunately it is :fro: that helped provide it.

It also gives United some unexpected questions as to what they do in the summer.
Interesting that Moye's signings seem much better than LVG's right now. Mata and Fellaini playing very well, while ADM, Falcao and Shaw aren't adding anything.

Most expensive players in the MUFC-MC game yesterday, estimated annual FFP costs £ per year:

ADM 22.3Falcao 20

RVP 17.4

Mata 16

Rooney 15.6

Fernandinho 13.7

Shaw 13

Mangala 12.7

Aguero 11.2

And more reasons why Moyes was crap as the United Manager. Right or wrong the issue is Moyes didnt seem to know what to do with them or how to get the best out of them or the team and LVG does.

Mata and Fellaini are Moyes signings and are proving to have been good. Did he sign anyone else?

To be fair, Herrera and Blind are both LVG signings and they have been vital. ADM, Rojo have had moments good and bad. Shaw has been hurt a lot and Falcao was a risk/reward move and he looks to have busted.

that Moyes couldn't figure out how to use Fellaini is brain-bamboozling to me.

Where is Christo with our pics from the game? He did that last time, right?

It really is. But Moyes was overwhelmed at the size of the club and the expectations. And no, I do not think time would have helped. I think he made a rash buy to show something in the transfer window and it snowballed from there.

Woodward tried to sign Herrera last January, Not really a LVG signing.
True.

Me: I'll ask Gator

Wife: Who?

Me: Go back to not caring please

Well we still need a semi-City collapse and a near flawless finish, but within 4 (really need to make up 5 points) with 6 games to play inspires a bit of hope.

stranger things have happened.

have to win out though.
Aside from Chelsea no one over 10th to play for Liverpool.

City have 6, 7, & 8 in the table in Southhampton, Tottenham, Swansea

City have 4 of 6 at home, Liverpool have 4 of 6 away...

I'm not either. BUT they are in good form and have navigated the roughest part of their run in. Chelsea has arguably a rougher schedule now. And Arsenal and Liverpool have FA Cup games to mix in.

So, 6 games to go, United need 11 points to maintain CL spot if Liverpool wins out, 15 to maintain 3rd if City wins out.

United at Chelsea, @ Everton, v WBA, @ Palace, v Arsenal, @ Hull

Need 4 wins for CL spot (or 3 wins, 2 draws)

Need 5 wins for 3rd.

Run the table means 2nd place and a possible shot at the title if Chelsea looses 3 games other then to United.

Also, my daughter was selected to be the "honorary captain" at the local USL home opener this weekend. She is totally super excited, and has been making me call her "Captain" ever since finding out. :lmao:

I think 16 points gets Liverpool in over City. 5 wins and a Chelsea draw. 18 is a slam-dunk, but 16 should do it. Unless of course, City all of a sudden gets hot again.

Bamford has scored again for Boro in a huge Championship game against Wolves, now has 19 goals on the season. Making a huge statement that Mourinho will have to take note of when considering CF options this summer.
