Why lunge at the ball like that? You miss, and you're lunging against one of the best attackers in the world, and Suarez is alone against the keeper.

And then he just kind of turns and faces his goal as Suarez finishes.

So. Many. Demerits.
Luiz....world team of the year..let that set in
World-record transfer price for a defender too, IIRC. The bizarre disconnect between how good he actually is and how good he's perceived by some is really staggering.

But he's Brazilian and has funny hair!

Lulz was dreaming of Suarez last night, no doubt about it. And not the good kind either -- where Suarez shows up in the sheep...

I've said too much.

Montreal has hit 58,000 for ticket sales for the CCL final which is technically a sellout but they are trying to figure out how to bring the capacity up by adding in some temporary stands if they can get it done in time.

Luiz' transfer fee was confirmed at approx €50m / £37m when Chelsea released its 2013-14 financials earlier this year (the football media still often wrongly reports the rumored fee of £50m.) Somewhat surprisingly, according to Tranfermarkt, Rio Ferdinand's 2003 transfer to United (€46m) is still second all-time for a defender and Lilian Thuram's 2002 transfer to Juve (€41.5m) is still fourth. Thiago Silva to PSG (€42m) is third highest record transfer for a defender. Thankfully for Barcelona, recent big deals for Luiz, Mangala, Shaw, Denilo and Benatia have finally pushed the 2010 Chygrynskiy deal out of the top 20.

btw - Luiz looked very bad on the two Suarez goals, and there's extra humiliation in being nutmegged and beaten after lunging at a ball so high up, but he was now the only problem PSG had yesterday. I was at home with my kids and switching between games, but from what I saw the PSG midfield was invisible, with Barca easily swinging the ball left to right and back, picking its spots at will. Cavani was terrible - constantly losing possession and then giving up, offering no help against Busquets. Luiz and Veratti playing DM roles were a nightmare against Chelsea last month - looked a completely different team yesterday.

Even measured in Euros the Luiz transfer fee is absurd.

Not sure why this struck me as funny, but I laughed

Liverpool fan on the football phone-in show:

"I waited 20 years for United to become #### and it only lasted 12 ####### months."
I have some friends who are Liverpool fans and this is pretty much the general feeling. They were over the top happy last season and this year its right back to how the last 20 have been.

No selling team will ever compete at the highest level for long. It's just too hard to constantly rebuild.

Dumping Welbeck and Kagawa make them a selling club? If they finish top four, United could overtake Real Madrid as the top earning club in the world.

I assume he meant Liverpool. Man U had a net transfer spend of £125M this season.

I'm talking about Liverpool.

English sports writers trumping up rumors these days about a Man U-Soton Chicharito-for-Clyne swap. I don't think Cheech is There's Only One Ronald Koeman's type of striker but, granted, I've only seen him work pretty much with one guy.

Barcelona running on all cylinders will do that to you. When they are on, they are crazy good and can overrun nearly any midfield, due to their ball playing CBs, DMs with excellent vision and passing skills, and 2 of the best outlet men in the game. And that's without Xavi...

I love Hernandez but I don't see that as a good fit for Soton but as a United fan would be all for it.

United not winning anything and their fans being ecstatic about being third?

Ok

Top 4 is like a trophy.

I expect Mourinho will set up for a draw, even playing at home with a decent gap to second. He's just grinding points to the end now. If Drogba starts up front again, it will likely be a dull affair.

I feel like LFC have spent plenty. Just too much on ####ty players.
I think it's too early to make a definitive judgement on most of the players acquired in the summer. They are all still very young. Also, while the total spend on players were high, the net spend ended up around 25-30 million pounds, which is less than the clubs around us in the table. We are still hampered by the H&G years, and finances are just starting to turn around. I think it'll be at least another 5 years before we can start spending at levels close to the current top 4. Lets not forget that we are just 5-6 years removed from being close to bankruptcy.

IMHO, the only wasted money in the summer was the 16M for Balotelli, but I can also see where they felt it warranted to take a gamble on him, late in the window, and few options.

The club spent for depth, and succeeded in that, got some very promising prospects, and solidified the core of the team. We have done this in the past too (spent for depth), and were never able to take the next step. (Tottenham did too, with the Bale money, and I think Spurs are a tougher and deeper team for it). With FPP it'll be harder, but we are now in a position where if the money next summer is spent on 3 starters/stars, we can push for the title (outside chance) or CL qualifying (good chance).

I'd like us to spend big on:

20+ goal striker, who can play off the shoulder of the defense, and play wide as well as direct. There are plenty of names being tossed about, all between 20M and 30M.

box-to-box midfielder, DM, who is a star player, replacing the distribution abilities and leadership of Gerrard, the 2005 version of Gerrard if you will. I'm intrigued by Sammy Khedira, who I believe is avaible on a free this summer.

keeper/sweeper in the Neuer mold.

The biggest issue getting these type of players have been salary demands, but there's a lot of salary coming off the books this summer:

Gerrard: 120k/wk (?)

Johnson: 100k/wk

Toure: 90k/wk

Aspas

Luis Alberto

Balotelli 70k/wk (?)

Borini

I'm not 100% sure of the total wages, but have seen in other places that it's around 500k/wk in salary that disappears. That should be plenty of wage space for 3 big names. The club was ready to offer Suarez 200k/wk, so there are no policies in place preventing a big splash.

The other issue is convincing players (and their wives) to move to Liverpool over other cities, but players have been willing to move to Manchester, so it's really more a matter of selling them on the idea that the club is making strides to get back to the European elite, and can offer regular CL football in the future. Could be a big ask, but I believe players that may not be regulars for the top 9 could be sold on the idea, or players looking to take the next step up.

Bottom line, we need more revenue to continuously threaten the top 4, and to stay ahead of Spurs. The stadium expansion is the next step on that road, and with the extra revenue/spend, we should be able to position ourselves for a chance at regular European football. I think we will threaten for top 4 for the next 5 years, make it some, miss some, and maybe push for the title one of those years if all the stars align. FSG has done a great job of bringing in additional sponsors, and I think that will only continue.

Also, there has been very little discussion in here about the Raheem Sterling saga. He's made quite a mess of himself in the press, and angered a lot of the hard core fans, who feel he is being unreasonable. Rumor/Information is that he rejected a 100k/wk contract extension (he has 2 years left on a 35k/wk contract), and is looking for 150k+/wk. No doubt he's one of the more interesting prospects coming out of England in a while, but I don't think he's worth 150k/wk yet.

I think it will speak tons of the clubs ambitions and short term goals how they handle him in the summer. They could cash in to the tune of 30-50M (in Europe, or higher if within the UK) if things get out of hand.

Personally I'd like to lock him up for another 5 years, base of 100k, with heavy incentives bringing him up to 150-180 if he meets them.

Louis van Gaal tells #MUTV that Carrick, Rojo, Jones & Blind will miss Saturday's game at Chelsea. Evans still suspended. Shaw available.
That's pretty rough, especially going to the bridge. Do you still feel Mourinho will play defensively?
This is crazy to see. Guess United will get either blackett or mcnair in the back with Shaw, Smalling and Valencia

I would guess Herrera moves to holding mf with mata, fellaini, young, ADM playing in front of him. Rooney up top. OR a less pleasing option of Rooney dropping in and Falcao up top.

Either way I expect this could be ugly to watch

He'll want to win of course and will always be looking for a goal, but with Costa out it really depends on Remy's availability. Drogba up front from the start is like playing with 10. The litmus test is always Ramires (defense) or Oscar (attack).

Turmoil in Bavaria, as renown Bayern Munich team Dr. and his staff resigned today apparently due to clashes with Pep over recent injury problems. https://twitter.com/BavarianFBWorks/status/588785589526245376

They clashed on the touchline last week when Pep reacted in a juvenile fashion to Benatia's injury.
Not good at all. Rather the medical staff, I would question whoever is in charge of conditioning.

Bayern accept club doctor's resigniation with regret

Last I saw, he was still 50-50

Bayern is suffering from playing in the Bundesliga IMO. Even more so than RM and Barça, too many games are a cake walk and they haven't faced enough quality opposition to harden their skills. Also, there does seem to be something with the training going on there.

This would be like if Celtic had $2m/wk to spend on wages. They'd romp through the SPL only to have to change everything to play against top European teams in CL play. At least la liga has Atleti, Valencia, Sevilla, and Athletic to keep the big two honest and in form during the season.
