How I see it unfolding.

FIFA - shocked, just shocked! at the finding of corruption in CONCACAF and CONMEBOL bands them from hosting the 2026 and 2030 World Cups.

In the "spirit of Fair Play and openness" FIFA then proclaims that all remaining FIFA members in the other 3 confederations are free to participate in the 2026 and 2030 bid processes, regardless of previously existing continental rotation rules.

It certainly indicates the deferral of the vote last week was no accident. They must have been tipped off this was coming.

Any indication what world public opinion about the arrests has been?
Everyone in the world knows FIFA is corrupt. The new only people who would publicly go against this are ones that might be involved at a lower level.

You would have to look far to find any real fan of the sport not happy about what is going on.

You will however find plenty of people questioning if this will even change anything.

Good questions about who the victims are. Lynch's response somewhat embarrasingly referenced fraud taking away money that could be used to buy soccer balls for kids. :cringe:

I'm pretty sure that is just a coincidence and more a result of FIFA "politics" than anything.

Excellent to hear. Thought (and hoped) opinion might run that way, but wasn't sure if there would be much backlash that it was the US doing it.

Mighty mighty El Salvador checking in :)

@elgraficionado: Pese al escándalo de FIFA, dirigente de FESFUT, Francisco Peñate, reiteró que este vienes el voto será para Blatter (vía @bazucapenate)

Which means they are voting for Blatter no matter what the scandel is.

There might be some small backlash, but this could hurt soccer in the US as well if FIFA decides to stick it to the US.

People have already joked that we might never host a WC again and I fear the potentially enormous 100th anniversary of the Copa America that the US is hosting next summer could be in jeopardy if FIFA wants to screw with US Soccer.

According to ESPN, the Swiss will be interviewing the 10 ExCom members who participated in the 2010 vote.

The FBI will get Blatter.

Not shocking but still ugly

@24thminute: Craig Forrest just alluded to what I believe to be true. That some of this corruption at CONCACAF may directly have impacted results.

Page 46 says Datisa (a conglomerate of all these marketing firms) paid 35 million for the media rights and then $110 million in bribes to Webb et al in 2013-4. Makes me believe the Feds had a hand in writing the contract to get all these guys in a nice tidy bow.

From the cheap seats, this whole thing is pretty awesome. :pickle:

Anybody know when Outside the lines is airing later today...Ley referenced it but I didn't catch the time.

Is this related to the Copa or something else?

Page 80 is juicy as well. Gets into Warner's son taking a suitcase full of cash back from Europe for the '10 vote and how Warner got 10 million for securing the vote for SA.

OMG....they have wires from FIFA to Warner for this vote.

Listening to the Grumpy Pundits on Satellite Radio this morning made a good point about this kind of thinking. Not sure I can state it as succinctly/eloquently as they did but here is the gist:

The WC used to be South America and Europe. Now we get nations from all over having a chance to get to play and a lot of that was due to the current FIFA regime. Why would these smaller countries go against Sepp or the others who made this possible where it wasnt available to them before? Corrupt or not, they have opened the game to a wider section of the world so why risk that being eliminated by voting Sepp out?

You forgot to mention that everyone involved has personally pocketed millions of dollars.

Not to quote myself on this, but the US has a wire from FIFA's bank account to Warner to the tune of 10 million dollars for the 2010 vote since the SA FA couldn't pay it directly (it had to be funneled through FIFA and ironically enough the SA government wasn't comfortable sending it directly). The Swiss are talking to the 10 ExCom members who participated in that vote and raided FIFA headquarters to get the electronic documents.

This is just getting started.

I really want this all to build to WC2022 corruption. I don't even care now if we get it(which is done and dusted now), I just want Qatar not to have it.

Because it's not going to go back, with or without Sepp.

Getting people from Switzerland to the U.S. can be tricky. The Swiss won’t extradite people to the United States for tax evasion, and in general, the Swiss are loathe to extradite people for purely financial crimes. But U.S. officials expect these FIFA people will be handed over. It’s almost like Swiss said, “We do not agree with your American obsession with financial crimes, and we usually stay out of matters of foreign intrigue... wait, did you say ‘FIFA’? Oh, we’ll help you get those bastards.”

The ironic part is they may not even need that if the 2010 bribing is so open and shut. Nevermind the 2014 process, where Brazil was front and center. My guess is they try to roll the Brazilian guys on this stuff and when that happens, look out Sepp.

My guess is they already have the bank wires for the '18 and '22 votes (if '10 had 10 million for Warner's crew, those two might have 100 million or more) and are waiting to roll one of these guys to prove it was for vote buying. Keep in mind they have the bin Hamman wire sending money from Doha Bank to Warner, so I'm sure they have more leads from there.

Yeah, the Swiss government doesn't like FIFA.

6 of the 7 have already formally challenged their extradition

I honestly don't care what happens to these guys. The evidence is the most important part IMO. It'll take a long time, but I do think it will eventually lead to real changes.
