Lol @ Dempsey red card!

He got tossed for swiping the ref's book and ripping it up. There is video of this.

P.S. Seattle is out of the USOC

Meh. Pretty stupid. They'll throw the book at him for this.

ETA: whoa -- the Sounders finished with 7 men!
Here are the low lights :)

How come one team wasn't wearing a light color jersey? Really hard to keep track of players.

Sigi :)

"I didn't want to get thrown out, so I walked away. I was maybe going to choke a referee so I walked away before I did something stupid."

-- Seattle Sounders coach Sigi Schmid after his team lost to the Portland Timbers, 3-1, in overtime in the U.S. Open Cup. The Sounders had three players sent off and finished with seven players because star Obafemi Martins was stretchered off the field with a groin injury after they had used all their subs.

No upsets? Oh well.

The red that drew dempseys ire/insanity... guy threw an elbow? Embellished? Watched on my phone, hard to see.

Was going back and forth between US WWC and the Argentina Copa game. Ref seemed to be making a debacle of it. Good to let them play and not fall for the 30 rollovers but he was not in control. Even Messi was arguing and you dont see that very often.

Argentina coach sent to the stands.

Messi allowed to run through a defender who had no way to move or get out of the way moments after the defender was allowed to bear hug aguero and try to toss him off the ball wwe style. Hard to watch.

Does anyone know how the rules work for Dempsey's red card last night?

If that is an MLS game., he obviously would get a multi game suspension but with it being a US Open Cup game, does that mean he can only be suspended from playing in next years Open Cup games?

Or since US Soccer runs the US Open Cup, can they also suspend him from playing league games?

what was Azira's red for? The cards seemed soft in the video but it wasnt very clear.

And how many times have we wanted to do what Dempsey did? I have always wanted to grab the card from the ref and show it back to the him!

 found this:

Dempsey is likely to be suspended just for US Cup matches, unless he is deemed to have committed an assault against the referee, in which case a possible three-month ban across US football could apply.
Of course, this type of behavior could open the door for Klinsmann to make a change at captain...

Wouldn't surprise me if they deemed grabbing the book out of the refs hands an assault and bans him.

That would incorporate the Gold Cup. I think we see some Artura Vidal type leniency here.

If it weren't Dempsey they might. But given who gets to decide and the impact it would have on MLS/USMNT I bet they let him skate.

ETA: what Sebowski said.

What a bloodbath for the USL. Hopefully the Battery can make a stand against Orlando City tonight.

The good news is the home teams went 8-1 and the game is in Charleston.

I agree with you and Sebowski, but also because it IS Dempsey and so high profile they may make a statement. Its too bad ref's dont get the same kind of punishment/accountability.

I feel like every day brings us one step closer to getting WC2022 out of Qatar

===================

Swiss prosecutors are investigating 53 cases of possible money laundering in their inquiry into bidding for the 2018 and 2022 Fifa World Cups.

Attorney General Michael Lauber said the incidents had been reported by Swiss banks.

He said his office was analysing a "huge amount" of seized Fifa data in its inquiry.

The Swiss investigation is running in parallel to one being carried out by the US.

Separately, Fifa's chief ethics investigator said on Wednesday that the organisation was also looking into alleged breaches by officials relating to bidding for the 2018 and 2022 tournaments.

"Should new evidence come to light, the investigatory chamber will widen the group of suspects," Carl Borbely said in a statement, adding that Fifa investigators were prepared to increase staff numbers "at any time if needed".

The 2018 and 2022 World Cups were awarded to Russia and Qatar respectively. But senior Fifa official Domenico Scala has said the awards could be cancelled if evidence emerges of bribery.

Both countries deny any wrongdoing.

just mind boggling.

When you think of the entire team that you could put together by going to South America with 40m pounds, it is just crazy.
Just watch, and learn. These are extremely shrewd, highly talented negotiators at work.

Daniel Levy agrees.
