What a goal from Aguero...absolutely fearless. This Argentina-Uruguay game is a war.
Man, the Argies can put out a fun front line. This was easy for us Euro-snobs to appreciate since every important player in the game plays in Europe.
Whole tournament features the best in the world. Firmino, people! Firmino!

I feel like every day brings us one step closer to getting WC2022 out of Qatar

===================

Swiss prosecutors are investigating 53 cases of possible money laundering in their inquiry into bidding for the 2018 and 2022 Fifa World Cups.

Attorney General Michael Lauber said the incidents had been reported by Swiss banks.

He said his office was analysing a "huge amount" of seized Fifa data in its inquiry.

The Swiss investigation is running in parallel to one being carried out by the US.

Separately, Fifa's chief ethics investigator said on Wednesday that the organisation was also looking into alleged breaches by officials relating to bidding for the 2018 and 2022 tournaments.

"Should new evidence come to light, the investigatory chamber will widen the group of suspects," Carl Borbely said in a statement, adding that Fifa investigators were prepared to increase staff numbers "at any time if needed".

The 2018 and 2022 World Cups were awarded to Russia and Qatar respectively. But senior Fifa official Domenico Scala has said the awards could be cancelled if evidence emerges of bribery.

Both countries deny any wrongdoing.
53 possible cases is no joke especially in light of the 2010 "advance".

Is Pekerman's reliance on Falcao going to be his downfall?

Seems so.

The guy is soooooooo out of form, but he refuses to bench him

P.S. I did not know that my man Lucky played for the Cosmos... I may actually have to start following an NASL team now.

I'm still in the Neymar only looks world class when paired with Messi and Suárez camp.
?? He has 44 goals in 64 appearances for Brazil.

EDIT: And he's still only 23.
Still not impressed with his game. Cuadrado looks better today, more dangerous from more areas.

I also didn't realize that he had scored that many. That includes friendlies though, right? What's his record in international tournaments (Copa America, World Cup, etc.). He didn't participate in WC qualifying last time, but in this round he'll play a huge role.

He had 4 goals and 1 assist in five games at the World Cup before getting injured. He had four goals and won the Golden Ball at the 2013 Confederations Cup.

He was 19 for the last Copa America but he scored a brace against Ecuador in that tournament.

Even in this tournament, Neymar was incredible in the last game against Peru. A goal, an otherworldly assist that split 6 defenders for the winning goal, and an absolute cannon off the crossbar.

We tend to think of Brazilian teams as being loaded with talent, but Neymar has carried them for the past 3 or 4 years.

I guess you're right, scoob. He and the Brazil team looked decidedly ordinary today. I missed the Peru game.

Charleston v Orlando City

A nice steamy night with a decent crowd on a Wednesday night

The first half was pretty uneventful with both sides having a few chances, but 0-0.

The second half was a completely different story.

The Battery took the lead in the 58th minute only to see Orlando equalize in the 64th.

The Battery took the lead right back in the 67th.

OC commits a foul right outside the box, and the OC players rush the ref and bowl a Battery player over right in front of the ref. The ref actually pulled out his red card, everyone saw it, then put it away and threw a yellow. The Battery hit the post off the free kick.

75th minute the ref awards a questionable PK to OC and they convert. 2-2

Extra time

94th minute and the Battery keeper gets all ball and the OC player takes a tumble. PK awarded, 2-3

105th minute and the Battery keeper commits a really bad foul and another PK. 2-4

105+ stoppage of first extra time and the Battery hit on a great shot. 3-4

115th minute and handball in the box by OC, PK to Charleston 4-4

Penalties

Battery goes first 1-0, Battery save ...1-0

Both sides hit 2-1

OC keeper with a save, Battery with a save ...2-1

OC with a save, OC scores ...2-2

then 10 straight goals

3-3, 4-4, 5-5, 6-6, 7-7

OC makes a save, OC scores 7-8

The Battery was knocked out of last year's cup by OC u23 13-12 on kicks. There is some definite hate between these clubs building.

Holy crap. Orlando had 3 straight pk's in the game and OT? Did the Battery keeper get tossed after giving up back to back pk's?

Did Kaka play tonight?

Wow. Fuck. Great update. I was pulling for you.

I keep trying to place Sanchez, where does he play his club ball? He was pretty good defensively last night.

Southampton updates (because I know you're all waiting for them): they've signed Sporting Lisbon RB Cedric Soares to replace Clyne, they're pursuing Lille's Idrissa Gueye for the Schneiderlin departure (and because you can't have too many Senagalese mids) and they've broken out fabulous new second kits this season.

@darrenrovell: FIFA's $27M movie has reportedly closed in the US after earning $918 at box office. Only 75 movies in history have done worse.

Will have to wait for Netflix to pick this up I suppose.

I feel like this movie is perfect for Rocky Horror style cult status but don't want FIFA to profit from it.

Neymar and Bacca pick uo striaght reds at the end of the game

Pretty hard shove from Bacca and Neymar didnt go down?

What a bunch of idiots in deed. Cant say I blame Bacca for backing up his team. Neymar hitting the ball off the defenders back after the whistle (Although that looked quite embellished) and then headbutting the other?
Yeah, I thought maybe a sniper in the crowd shot him at the exact same time as he got drilled.

Of course there's a ton of bad blood between these teams, intense emotions that can't be captured in a short vine. The Colombians are very good at provoking Neymar, but that's no excuse for kicking the ball at an opponent after the final whistle. Now Brazil is in danger of not making the knock-outs. Will need at least a draw against Venezuela, playing without Neymar.

It's gonna take every Fred they got!

Would love it if Liverpool grabbed Clyne

Was it Colombia or Chile that put a knee through Neymar in the World Cup? Actually, it was Colombia right? IIRC it was the same game Brazil spent the first half kicking lumps out of James.

Carlos Sanchez? The Columbian defensive midfielder? He had an average to below average season for Villa.

FWIW, Sqawka rated Gueye as something like the 7th most effective player in Ligue 1 last year. Ahead of guys like Veratti.

Now's the time to come waving their checkbook, the awful Trafford people are backing away a little on him.

Sanchez plays for Villa, how could I forget? Probably blinded by the brilliance of Concrete Ron whenever I watch them.

There were plenty of observers that thought Brazil's game plan was as much a factor in Neymar getting hurt as anything the Colombians did. To put it simply, they started it.

Hmmm, that's pretty interesting about Gueye, who I don't remember seeing at all this past year. Of course, I think he's still just a twinkle in Saints' eye. I can't believe none of the CL clubs have ponied up for Schneiderlin yet.
