Thanks for the explanation. For all the joking about a 4th place trophy, it seems like there is a pretty large financial incentive for the EPL to keep that 4th CL spot (even with the new TV money). I would think teams like United, Liverpool and Spurs might be a little more motivated to take Europa seriously this year but the league is so wide open they may all decide to focus on that.
Blame Southampton if PL loses a spot. They fawked it all up.
Yeah - though to be fair I thought they sent a decent squad to their game, and just lost.
That's accurate IMO as well. It was kind of a forerunner of how things have gone lately at St. Mary's.

I should add that Spurs have qualified for the knockout and most fans want to see a fully rotated squad this week against Monaco at home. Same fans were also furious that Spurs played a strong squad away at Qarabag (in Azerbaijan) before the Chelsea match - but I don't think it had any impact on the Chelsea game. Chelsea came ready to park the bus at WHL, and I thought Chelsea were very organized on defense for a change this season - resting players mid-week would not have helped Spurs unlock that defense.

I expect that Spurs will split the baby here - and start a strong club - but might rotate a little bit more than normal - but no youth players.

I'm a big fan of continuity but it was time for him to go. He consistently trotted out the same formation and players and the results never changed. To be fair they never found an adequate replacement for Bony. Gomis is flat out horrible and lazy.
On the positive side, Monk's sacking frees him up to take the England job.

In retrospect, it's easy to say he lacked the experience for a top-flight job but he got good results for a while. I don't understand why they had a quiet summer. They needed to find a goalscorer to replace Bony and Eder wasn't it. The bottom half of the league is so competitive now that if a team isn't improving, it's falling behind.

Pretty sure I'd rather not hear the term "split the baby" ever again. Thanks for that, Sinn.
:lol: I do what I can

ETA - its from the Solomon parable - maybe not in wide usage?

Bayern's starting lineup for today's match at Zagreb:
Ulreich - Rafinha, Benatia, Martinez, Lahm - Rode, Alonso, Kimmich - Ribery, Green - Lewandowski

I started to laugh at ManU then I remembered Newcastle. Can't get past that one.
Well - United were horrible but if the goal is to actually win the CL then getting eliminated this season isn't the end of the world. They were never going to win the competition - no chance. And it has to help their top-4 chances for this year (even if just a little) because I don't see them taking Europa too seriously. Also - it may mean that LvG is gone sooner rather than later which could be good. Sucks they didn't advance but they didn't deserve to go through. The funny thing is that I think LvG panicked somewhat today. I don't think he trusted his team to get a 1-0 win so he set them up to score and not defend. May have been their undoing - they were horrible defensively. And the fact that :fro: continues to play is mind-boggling. Hopefully they don't compound things by panic-buying during the window.
For a coach that preaches pace and possession, his continued reliance on the big fro is asinine. I dont get it. Then to compound it by leaving him in and subbing Mata out while chasing a goal? WTF? Add to that sending in Nick Powell while leaving Young and Perreira on the bench? A guy not seen since the MK Dons debacle? Inuries are one thing, but his subbing has never once made sense.

To me the draw at home to PSV was worse and why they are out. Going to Wolfsburg was never going to be easy. So to throw away the PSV game with a play for a draw at home was worse.

Just goes to show what a wizard Fergie was. That last team of his had absolutely no business winning the title. Even with a fit and in form RVP.
This can not be stressed enough. The players who played major roles in this team were either crap under Moyes or shipped out by LVG and deemed not good enough. Where I agree with some of them (Cleverly, OShea, Evans) it just goes to show how SAF got the most out of his players and the United system.

Pretty big news from MLS today

=================================

MLS announces $37 million investment in Targeted Allocation Money, Homegrown Player funds for 2016-17

Major League Soccer announced on Wednesday that it will be investing an additional $37 million in player compensation over the next two years with the goal of “providing clubs the opportunity to sign more impact players in the middle of the roster and add young Homegrown talent,” according to a league statement.

The additional funds, which supplement the current $3.6 million salary budget per team in 2016, come in two forms: $800,000 of Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) in both 2016 and 2017 and $125,000 in extra Homegrown Player funds for each of the next two years.

TAM was initially introduced in 2015 as part of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement with the MLS Players Union which called for an additional $500,000 for each of the league’s 20 teams to be used during the five years of the CBA (2015-2019). Players like Johan Venegas (Montreal Impact), Gaston Sauro (Columbus Crew SC) and Anibal Godoy (San Jose Earthquakes) were signed with TAM money which allowed their salaries to be paid down to fit under the maximum salary budget charge of $457,500.

“By injecting an additional $37 million into the system, our clubs will be able to strengthen the depth of their rosters by signing more high-quality players,” MLS Deputy Commissioner Mark Abbott said in a league statement. “We saw immediate dividends this past season with the initial investment in Targeted Allocation Money, and our owners believe that additional spending -- especially for players who will impact the middle of our rosters -- will make MLS even more entertaining and compelling.”

Here’s how the new injection of TAM funds will work:

  • TAM can be used to sign new players or re-sign current players that earn between $457,500 and $1 million;
  • TAM can be used to buy down a player contract to free up a Designated Player slot. If that happens, the club must simultaneously sign a new Designated Player at an investment equal or greater to than the player he is replacing;
  • Teams are not permitted to combine TAM and general allocation money on a player. Either TAM or general allocation money may be used on a player in a single season, not both;
  • TAM money can be traded by clubs;
  • The minimum budget charge for a player signing that uses TAM funds is $150,000; Any part of the $800,000 in TAM funds that go unused in 2016 will carry over to 2017;
  • Teams are allowed to commit, but not use or disburse, 2017 TAM funds toward a 2016 player contract;
  • Any of the $1.6 million in TAM funds per team that go unused by the end of the 2017 summer transfer window will revert back to the league.
In addition to TAM, teams will also have an incremental $125,000 per season to sign Homegrown players over each of the next two years. These funds can be spread across multiple Homegrown players.

I really hate the "focus on the league" excuses. Seems like only an EPL thing to say. I don't hear it about the Spanish, Italian, or German clubs. You don't pick and choose which games you want to win at that level. You want to win them all. That should be the bloody focus, you Brits.
The German clubs take a winter break in the league. Even if the other continental league don't, the EPL is the only league I can think of that packs more fixture congestion from the league into "the festive season." English teams almost always enter 2016 exhausted.

I'm torn about the Garry Monk firing. On the one hand the board likely had a role in Swansea's failure to replace Bony. And let's be clear, despite how high they finished in 14-15 they were not the same team after Bony left.

On the other hand, I have watched a core group of the same players who dazzled in their respective roles last year under Monk -- Sigurdsson, Ki, Shelvey, Williams, Cork, even Fabianski - look completely flat and disorganized ever since September. So whose fault is that? Probably a little blame to go all around but this is modern sports so firing the team is not really an option is it?

The disturbing thing for this season is that the team doesn't seem to even have a suitable replacement lined up if press reports are to be believed. Hell, they haven't even named a caretaker. Unless they find someone who can whip this group of underachievers into shape and find a legitimate scoring threat in January, they'll be Championship League-bound.

And players get jaded. And as more new players are brought in, less and less of the team gives a crap that their manager was a club legend because they have no link to him. Montero looked absolutely electric in his first few games, but he's a guy who appears to quickly stop giving a crap when things get tough. Ayew, at least, has been pretty productive. When Jonjo Shelvey is, by far, your best CM, the league is going to catch up with you.

PL should only have 18 clubs in it, IMO.

anybody watch Green today?
I did a bit but fell asleep. Nothing jumped out at me.
This. Was watching the replay last night. Pretty sure Green was out there, but nothing else.
I did not watch the game but in looking him up on whoscored, he was tied for the lowest rated player on BM (with Ribery) and had the least touches on the team so your guys review seems right on the mark :) .

7 out of 7 Spanish teams in European competition through to knockout rounds.

Looks like Spurs did field a moderate team today - only going with 5 regulars in the starting line-up.

On the plus-side - US prospect CCV did make the bench - which suggests he has moved up to 4th choice CB.

It's coming home, It's coming home, it's coming

Football's coming home

AFC Wimbledon is ‘delighted’ that Merton Council has approved the club’s plans to build a new stadium in the borough. Speaking after the planning committee meeting at Merton Civic Centre, AFC Wimbledon Chief Executive Erik Samuelson, said: “We are all absolutely delighted. This has been a momentous day for our club and the most important event since we reformed it 13 years ago.

“Following the sale of our former Plough Lane site and the decision by the FA to allow Wimbledon FC’s Football League place to be moved to Milton Keynes, our fans did something unprecedented in the football world – we decided to re-form the club, enter the football hierarchy at the lowest level and repeat what the old Wimbledon FC did with massive success, namely make our way up through the many leagues into the Football League.

“We started with nothing, no team, no stadium, no manager, not even a strip to wear. But what was different this time was that the club was formed by and remains owned by the fans, in other words we are firmly rooted in our community. “We have never lost sight of that and so we have focused the majority of our community works on Merton because this is our home and we are delighted that we have been granted planning approval to return to Wimbledon."

I might be forgetting someone but I think Caleb Porter is now the 3rd person to coach a team to both a college and MLS Championship.

The other 2 I can think of were Sigi and Arena.

Arnold Peralta, a Honduran international who has played against the US and MLS teams numerous times was murdered today while on vacation. He was only 26.

oh jesus. He was shot dead while buying baby clothes for his new baby in front of his wife.

:(

US Soccer had to cancel todays womens friendly in Hawaii due to field conditions. I thought it was weather related but it was not according to this pic. What idiot thought this was going to be playable with out players getting hurt?

Maybe T&T should have gone ahead and played in Hawaii - might have been safer...

Alex Morgan goes in stud up on keeper and draws penalty
Who would of thought that Alex Morgan is awesome enough to be able to touch a keeper and get the call.
