Is it just me or are the Brits whiny #####es when it comes to ticket prices?
By US standards for sure. "The people's game" and all that. They still treat sports like they belong to the community.
How dare they!
I think American fans are spineless by comparison. A lot of it comes from the size of the communities and the unity that develops from traveling to away games and being penned up in a designated supporters' section together.

American fans offer some half-hearted protests, ineffective boycotts and eventual acquiescence. Meanwhile, longtime fans get pushed into the nosebleeds, prices go up, PSLs happen and teams pack up and move away like the circus.

Many of the hotbeds of English soccer are in dire financial shape. The recovery has benefitted the capital and the surrounding areas. There are some small pockets elsewhere in England where things are good but the North and Northeast have been in decline for decades relative to the rest of the "country".

It must really suck to live in Sunderland.

I'm not saying it's good or right, but that's just not how it is today.

ETA: at bigger clubs anyhow.

We all know the bad guys are going to win. The supporters who can afford to will continue to attend games. The rest will get gouged on a smaller scale to view the games on TV.

I'd say it's bad for the long term health of the game but everything that's happened in the past two decades points to me being wrong.

How does Martinez still have a job?
They finished 5th a few seasons ago which was hitting well above their weight. Everton isn't a top team anymore. They are a solid middle team and I expect as long as Martinez can keep them there he will stay.
They have way too much talent to be where they are in the table. Two years running.

they should be a bit higher than where they are now, IMO, but they're basically a 6-10 quality team. couple spots less is a bit of a disappointment, couple spots more is fantastic- I don't see anything else happening given the squad. too good to go down, not good enough to go up.
They have a lot of talent in the first XI. A top 3-5 striker in Lukaku. A very good AM in Deolefeu. A very highly rated young CB in Stones and England verteran in Jags. Baines is fading a bit (and was injured a lot), but he's still among the best LBs. Coleman is one of the best attacking RBs, if you value that stuff.

And they have decent players behind that. Barkley is inconsistent but talented. As is Mirallas. Besic is solid. Barry is solid against most teams but struggles a bit for pace. Howard is on the decline, but not the worst GK in the league. Funes Mori looks to be functional.

I suppose its a bit damning that they still play Lennon and Kone, but otherwise they're pretty good. They're not deep, though. Still, their defensive problems should have been ifixed by now.
I like all of those guys... and I actually like what Kone brings- especially his partnering with Lukaku. but he fades/disappears, which seems to be the MO for most of the team. and I like the team- just feel that, especially with the MF, they have a tough time consistently bossing games. if Barkley brought his ceiling every game? Mirralas too- looks world-class a third of the time, and goofy the rest. Barry is solid and consistent, but not a difference maker IMO. Baines.. forgot he's even playing this year- has he been injured? these are all guys that are definitely good enough to put Everton into Europe... but like I wrote earlier, that would be a victory. just like finishing anywhere near the bottom 3 would be a bizarre trainwreck. IMO, they finish 6-10 every year and maybe hope to sneak a run in europe or final appearance in a domestic cup.
Soooooo..... bad coaching maybe?

You have to remember the long history in each community, many spanning 100+ years. Many generations in a row supporting the same club, and the club bringing the area together. For many fans, these are not just clubs and businesses, they are the back bone of the city. You live and die with your club. There is no flip flopping and band waggoning going on. You are born into your club, or you form a strong relationship very early in life. You grow up watching your heroes play, and you laugh and cry with them. This is much bigger than just something to follow on Saturday afternoons. You spend the week leading up to the game talking about it, at work, at the pub, on the bus, at home, and after the game you talk about how it went, why, and how this will affect your season.

Many of these communities are very strained, with plenty coming from very blue collar areas. Football is the life blood in these communities, an escape from a harsh reality, a hope, a brotherhood. I know plenty of local fans don't care much for the non-native fans, because they feel it's their club. Their stadium. It's already tough enough for locals in many places to find match day tickets, and in economically challenging times, they now feel they are being priced out as well. English grounds used to be loud, raucous and intimidating to travel to, but that is changing. A part of the game is taken away, and the songs, banners and shouts are replaced by tourists, taking selfies, sitting on their arses, and not really bothered to help support the club. You rarely saw people get out of their seats in the 85th minute to go home. Now it happens all the time.

Many also feel that with the new TV deals, in the billions, clubs can afford to give fans a break. I think I read 40 million pounds per club, and nobody needs to raise ticket prices in that scenario. It's viewed as greed, and that doesn't play well in the communities the clubs are rooted in.

anyone use the nbc sports live extra app on their tv? Trying to figure it out, do I have to download itunes on my tv?

edit to add:I'll just stream on the web browser, let me know if the app works any better as far as a smooth stream or anything, I guess not.

2nd edit: Can't even download the adobe flash player, something about system or browser not letting it do it.

I got up early this morning (after staying up late to watch the awful USMNT friendly) knowing that I should have just slept in. City haven't beaten a top team all year, and have really only played one or two complete games since September. It's easy to say Leicester just seem to want it more, but City (especially once they go a goal down) just don't seem to give a crap. If they lose to Spurs next week, and I see no reason to think they won't, they'll be in a real fight to even finish top 4. And to top it all off, it's only 9:45 so way too early to drink...

What an unbelievable story. Leicesters unlikely title pursuit is the best thing to happen to the EPL since <name event>

Blackburn? But they were pretty good already and had paid a small nation's GDP for Shearer too.

Pre-EPL maybe Forest? Or Derby? Just saw the Derby season when I was looking into Clough.

For the first time Leicester are favorites to win the league. Will probably drift out just a bit after either Spurs or Arsenal win, but right now they're 7/4 and no one else is better than 3/1.

(re:latter part)...says who?

Liverpool reportedly offering 32$ mil for Lazio's Antonio Candreva; not young, but extremely talented & professional winger...the only drawback would be the "Lazio taint".

Interested to see how Klopp revamps Liverpool this summer, & to what extent he stamps his imprint on the club.

You know, they kind of have a point...

Modal ticket price for season ticket holders:

Code:
Liverpool 45.74 Tottenham Hotspur* 41.90 Chelsea 39.47 Arsenal 39.00 Manchester United 37.00 Manchester City 35.53 West Ham United 34.21 Aston Villa 28.68 Newcastle United 27.32 Everton 27.05

Neil Bernstein – ‏@nbernste

Since Liverpool last won the league Peter Schmeichel signed for Man Utd, won it 5 times, retired, had a son & he's about to win it with LCFC

I know it should not affect me much any more but I still need to pinch myself every so often when I see things like today's simultaneous games on Fox and NBC, both on the mothership channels..

Avoiding spoilers cause I'm watching Leicester/City, but omg that Mahrez goal to open the second half. Won't get the plaudits and the internet viral video fame, but that scissors absolutely ####### undressed Dimichelis. So dirty, Cristiano-esque.

Best part of that stepover was that the defender and everybody else assumed he was going to his favoured left. Guy got destroyed....all he needed to do was fall over like Boateng v Messi to make the destruction complete.

When did Oscar become so terrible?

I think Chelsea may be in for a few lean years - I don't think they can buy their way back into contention in just a single transfer window.
