Going to go out on a limb and say that it's not ideal to have both center backs trying to cut out a run into the channels in the opponent's half.  High pressure 75 minutes into a game is a dangerous proposition.
Especially when one of those center backs is as slow as Mertesacker. Arguable that the BFG shouldn't even be in the lineup for this one - it's not like Barca has a significant aerial threat to deal with.

Btw, how does a big club like Juve keep finding wonderkids like Dybala and Morata?  22 and 23 and scoring/assisting in UCL this late in the competition.

Don't think they were really secrets.  Morata was a Madrid academy star who couldn't crack the first team as he Benzema and Higuian ahead of him most of the time.  Pretty much everyone was in for Dybala in August after his season with Palermo last year.

they don't...both came into the big leagues through other teams. Palermo and Real Madrid in this case
Guess I didn't know the history on the two.  But seriously, even given their big play last year would a BPL team have slotted either of them into start at the beginning of the season?

I guess that's an advantage that a team like Juve have, they can incorporate youngsters in during league play and not worry about dropping points, whereas I'm not sure that's the case in the BPL.

I feel like the US could really use a couple wins over the Liga MX teams in this round of the CCL. Just to have somethng over Mexico. For ####'s sake.

Bit of a raw deal for DCU.  Thought they were the better side overall but the preseason lack of form was on display.  Thought they had the best chance of the mls teams to advance
This is Concacaf's second biggest event after the Gold Cup.

I don't understand why they won't shift these quarter finals 6 weeks later to assure that teams are in season instead of the MLS teams always in preseason.  Not only would it be more sporting, it would likely be more lucrative from an attendance stand point.  Having games in the northern US and Canada in February is nuts.

This season?  Of course.  Last season?  Morata yes, if not Dybala too.

22 and 23 aren't really "young" for soccer players, it's really the fringe of a player's prime.  I think it's easy to be in the US sports mindset of players going to college and hitting the pros at 21, but that's just not a reality in European soccer.  Players seem to peak in the 23-28 range and are shuffled out of the spotlight not long thereafter, save for GKs.  Aging veteran field players even in their early 30s are a rarity in the sport.

Shifting it back six weeks would put the semis and final right in the middle of the Liga MX playoffs.

For all intents and purposes, Seattle should bee playing like they're down right now. Because trying to hold a 2-1 lead in Azteca is how you end up losing 5-0.

Well, 2-2 might be a better result anyway. Every time an MLS team goes to Mexico with a lead, they come out playing for the scoreless draw, and seemingly have no plan for how to adapt once they concede. At least this way the Sounders know going in that they're gonna have to score.
