Is a two-tier system with Pro/Rel all that much better? It's still a closed a system. It's just a 40 team closed league and not a 20 team closed league.
You might be able to make the case that a 38 game balanced schedule would be fairer and that top-tier talent would be less diluted. But it's a business to the league and owners. They care about turnover and capital appreciation. Is a two-tier system with Pro/Rel all that much better? It's still a closed a system. Of course. And I think that's largely better for the teams. There's a theory that relegation is good because the risk of relegation drives investment. But my guess is that most sports owners are super risk adverse. And the big risk is investment and THEN relegation. Portsmouth won the FA cup and were in administration how soon after? It was less than 2 years, I think. And of course, there's Leeds, which is the textbook example of a death spiral. You might be able to make the case that a 38 game balanced schedule would be fairer and that top-tier talent would be less diluted. That's my assumption -- not that it will happen, but that if 2nd tier soccer generates $$$ the SEM can actually accommodate multiple leagues. It makes it possible where it otherwise wouldn't be.Unless somehow second tier US Soccer is going to generate significant revenues.

I think stability prompts investment. Which means the owners need to count on their television share. The counter-argument, that you could revenue-share among all 40 teams just doesn't make sense because you're more than doubling the effective free riders on the system. Unless somehow second tier US Soccer is going to generate significant revenues.
Cuadrado is a perfect example...it turns out win/win...Yes. I think everyone who looked at FFP closely knew that its effect would be to protect those teams that already had either a large revenue base (like United) or had the outside investment already (like PSG and City). It's hard to see how any team could pull a PSG and start challenging for multiple top players with big transfer fees overnight anymore.
Even among big teams I think there is a fairly stark difference among teams that really understand the system and those that don't. Chelsea's loan model, IMO, is brilliant. I don't know why more teams don't operate the same way. Buy lots of high upside but non sure thing talent in that 2 to 10 million range, loan them out. Take the ones that pan out to be excellent players and sell the guys that don't. Almost any sale in that situation, even one for less than they paid, is a black number under FFP because the transfer revenues out are amortized while transfer revenues in are not.
Didier did the dirty...it's been an enjoyable game for the most part..No discussion of The MLS v ASN?
Me too. I was so excited for the start of the preseason.....that's gone now.Didier did the dirty...it's been an enjoyable game for the most part..
...God, I can't wait for the real season to begin... withdrawal symptoms are setting in...(the real kind, not the shoddy alcoholic ones)
Difficult, yeah...that's pretty much a cyclical 365 day break every year...but you still have QPR!Jeez, guys. There's less than 3 weeks to kickoff. It's not like we're dealing with the NFL. I'm giving myself a break from games.
Being a FIRE! fan, that's not too difficult.
Can't wait till St. Louis...Me too. I was so excited for the start of the preseason.....that's gone now.

....planned on it; was going to be my last realistic chance to see Totti live...but alas, my son made travel team, and the resultant cost has shot that plan all to hell. Thanks a lot, son...
:( And a FBG cornhole opportunity goes up in flames like Mario Balotelli's career.....planned on it; was going to be my last realistic chance to see Totti live...but alas, my son made travel team, and the resultant cost has shot that plan all to hell. Thanks a lot, son...

Yes, Gator...I was being dead serious...the upcoming "friendly" will determine who the better team is. JFC, you guy.Silly Season in this thread indeed
jfc yous guys
I really do appreciate it...it's the travel cost, not the tickets...GB. Plus, since I found out Gator can't make it, it lost some of its luster. "GOD, I'd like to smash that scouser in his Portuguese face!" ####! Did I just think out loud? My bad, GB Gator...Do you need tickets? Because I'm likely going to have to give up mine.

"I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles" >>>>> "You'll Never Walk Alone"
At my match last night I was captain for the toss. Our team designates the captain as the person closest to the ref when he calls for captains. Before the toss he reiterated this is a Y league and it's for fun, and he was going to play quarters since it was 99 degrees at kickoff. The talk about "I'm the boss" and a reminder of the league's unique rules comes at the circle before kickoff. It is the Y, so every player is required to attend prayer at the midfield circle.Hey actual soccer players... does the ref ever pull the captains aside and remind tell them how they intend to enforce stuff like this so everyone's on exactly the same page?
i.e. ... "Time wasting after a foul by kicking the ball away or impeding the restart will be a yellow. I'll let you have your say after a foul, but if you swear or make a big scene it's a yellow. Etc?"

Always thought he was a classy guy and player - nice words to the fans - wish things would have worked out better for him at United.
Ok, maybe he is God.James Melville@JamesMelville
Zlatan Ibrahimovic's Man Utd shirt has made £76m in one week. By the end of the second week it will have paid for Pogba's £100m transfer.

So basically, Roma's transfer budget...I'm sure the margins are pretty good, but that's likely retail sales numbers, so you have to back out the retailer, distributor, prices. Plus, I'm sure Adidas gets a nice chunk as well. So I bet United's profit is probably only 20% of that retail number, maybe even lower.
Calling BS on this one. Even if they'd really sold a million of them at $100 a pop that's a gross number.James Melville@JamesMelville

Depends - i think they keep a much higher percentage of the sales from their own stores/online.I'm sure the margins are pretty good, but that's likely retail sales numbers, so you have to back out the retailer, distributor, prices. From what I can tell, the whole tweet was false. I don't deny that the shirt is selling well, but most ManU fans that I've read think that this tweet is entirely false.I think some of you are missing the bigger picture - I am sure that not profits, but it does show the financial clout that a team like United has, outside of any results on the pitch. As long as they can continue to build these off-the-field revenue streams they can continue to spend like drunken sailors.
Based on those numbers though, I bet they can swing the Pogba transaction when they consider Pogba's shirt sales on top of Zlatans....kind of like getting a player for free....

Depending on how the deal is structured, Adidas most likely gets all the revenue until United has hit certain targets.Depends - i think they keep a much higher percentage of the sales from their own stores/online.
I guess its reasonable to speak in the past tense regarding Schweini's time at United, but as far as I know he's still a United player, right?Always thought he was a classy guy and player - nice words to the fans - wish things would have worked out better for him at United.
Training with the kids...he is a United player, but not likely to play for UnitedI guess its reasonable to speak in the past tense regarding Schweini's time at United, but as far as I know he's still a United player, right?
He is as of right now - I see no chance he sticks around though. And if the Pogba deal gets completed then it seems even more certain he's gone.I guess its reasonable to speak in the past tense regarding Schweini's time at United, but as far as I know he's still a United player, right?
Sure, but in the fine print it says Untied get to keep all the revenue from the letteringDepending on how the deal is structured, Adidas most likely gets all the revenue until United has hit certain targets.
