1) When is the WSL on, do they show it on tv?

Season runs from April through August

2) do they show it on tv

Games are shown locally but the national package is limited to a handful of games on FS1

3) What teams are in the league? Where do they play?  

Boston - Soldiers Field Stadium

Chicago - Toyota Park (same as Fire)

Houston - BBVA (same as Dynamo)

KC - Swope Park (and a couple in Children's Mercy Park (same as Sporting KC))

Orlando - Camping World Stadium (same as Orlando City)

Portland - Providence Park (same as Timbers)

Seattle - Memorial Stadium

NJ - Yurkak Field

Washington DC - Maryland Soccerplex

Western NY - Rochester Rhino Stadium

 
I can think of 3 reasons:

1. A significant number of the top women players in the world play on the USWNT.  It's like watching a super team.  When you spread that talent around a league, the product suffers a little. 

2. Similar to gymnastics or swimming people get invested in national teams playing in international competitions even if they don't follow the sport at other times.  I have never seen Michael Phelps swim outside the Olympics or qualifiers but have watched most of his Olympic races.

3. Personally, I find the USWNT to be incredibly likable (other than Hope and Abby).  That 1999 team may have been the most personally likable team I ever followed in any sport and that seems to have carried forward. 

 
1) None of the women's sports is a huge winner relative to the same sport for men.  WNBA attendance is just over 7k per game, and it's been around for like 20 years now and IIRC TV viewership is maybe 10% of the NBA's.  Maybe the LPGA does OK relative to the PGA?

2) I'm not up on the details, but women's soccer has stopped and started, what, 3? 4? times in the last decade.  Different cities, different players, etc.

Put those two together and it's pretty easy to see how support would be truly terrible.

This is not in any way really arguable, especially for a women's sport.

And yet none of this popularity seems to ever translate to women's club soccer in the US. 

The difference in popularity of the US National Team and MLS is microscopic compared to the difference in popularity between the US Women's National Team and the NWSL.

While there will always be some sort of gap in popularity, can anyone speculate on why the gap is so enormous for the women between the nats and club in terms of popularity?  I have some thoughts but I would like to hear other ideas.

quality of play?

national team is the absolute cream of the crop in the world on one team, dominating everyone in their path. Americans like winners. especially when they are the national team. we can wave the flag and cheer on the home team knowing that there's no chance they are going to lose.

club level play isn't near the quality.. and the majority of people would rather watch the men's version of any sport (except gymnastics?).

eta: what everyone else already said.. like 9 times :oldunsure:

probably right but I rarely even stumble upon it. And usually Ill stop if it says soccer in the listing

Thanks.  Nothing local and only 2 west coast teams.

 
Hammers open their new stadium by pounding Slovenian side Domzale in the second leg and advancing to the Europa playoff round. Good for them.

And with that I have to leave since I am recording Newcastle and don't want it spoiled.

 
I wouldn't mind watching some NWSL. I also wouldn't mind watching more Champions League, EPL, Bundesliga, La Liga, Serie A, Eredivisie, MLS, Liga MX... and so on. So many options, so little time, and NWSL is way down the pecking order.

 
Going to the USASA National Amateur Cup semi finals tonight. 

Moreno Valley FC v Christos FC

Bavarian SC v Legends FC

Winners play tomorrow for all the marbles. 

 
Christos 2-0 over the Californians in the opener. Legends up 0-1 early over the hosts in the nightcap. Nice thing about Bavarian Park is they have a beerhall and a brewery on premises.

The Midwest champions and hosts Bavarians went down 1-0 in the 3rd minute and trailed 2-0 most of the second half, then went up a man in the 75th and scored in the 87th and 90th to force extra time. Won on penalties 5-4. Christos FC of Maryland v Bavarians tommorow for the US Amateur Cup. 

 
For the first time ever after the all star break, all 3 Canadian MLS teams (Vancouver, Montreal, and Toronto), are drawing more fans to their games than their associated CFL teams (Vancouver and Toronto share the stadiums with the CFL teams).

Congrats to 2016 National Amateur Cup champions Christos FC of Baltimore. This club was very tough, playing with ten men the second half and scoring two short handed goals in extra time to win the cup final, denying host Bavarians SC their 7th title.
