***Official Soccer Discussion Thread*** (4 Viewers)

The Argentina-Uruguay game last night was really fun to watch, insanely competitive and lots of great talent on the field. That blonde kid Argentina has in midfield did some amazing stuff, he could become a good one. Dybala got tossed on a questionable call just before the half but Argentina still played them pretty even in the second half. How good are you when you line up for a big game like that and keep Aguero and Higuain on the bench?

You know who keeps getting into Uruguay games and doing pretty well? Gaston Ramirez, which always surprises me a little.

Oops, maybe this should have gone in another thread.

The ironic thing about the NASL's issues is that they try to run their business the same way that soccer teams run them all over the world.  They want promotion relegation, they have every team to handle their own finances as individual teams etc.

At least Ottawa put out a small press release saying they intend to stay in the league

===================================

Here’s what Ottawa Fury FC had to say in its official spin: “Ottawa Fury is an NASL franchise and a league member in good standing. Over the last three seasons, Fury has forged strong ties with Ottawa/Gatineau soccer associations and the community at large and those efforts, combined with Fury’s high calibre of play, have established a growing fan base for professional soccer in our region. Our long-term focus is on gaining even greater fan support, this season and in future seasons, starting with (Friday) evening’s match against FC Edmonton at TD Place.”

Brazil had a huge win on the road last night beating Ecuador on the road.  They are still on the outside looking in but now are right back in striking distance.

I imagine they've improved but when I played intramural and college, I once went right down and back up on a field turf field.  No sliding or anything.  It took about a 6 x 3 inch piece of skin off my shin and left a wound that still wept 14 months later.  No bueno.

I watched that game... Ecuador REALLY unlucky in that. thought they had the better of things throughout.. until a very clear PK that neymar buried, and then an iffy red (second yellow for tackling over the ball... all ball, and the cleats went up just barely- and of course the brazilian made a complete meal of it and then all 10 brazil field players surrounded the ref). 3-0 was the final, but didn't at all mirror the game.

they didn't have field turf when I played. astro only. that #### was lethal. friends at cal (who played and trained on it) said they could recognize the grain direction and knew to only slide with the grain to minimize the burn. I knew better than to slide on that crap.

I don't remember if it was Espanyol or Getafe (one of those lesser teams from one of the two big cities in Spain) that had Burger King as the sponsor a few years back.  They had players have a picture of the King on their undershirts so they could reveal him when they scored.  And the King would be sitting up in the owner's box watching the game. It was gloriously bizarre.

You couldn't slide on that crap no matter which way the grain went.  It was the sand and rubber that got you.

And Serie A?

:bag:

It amazes me how far & fast its fall from grace has been...just 10 yrs ago, it was arguably the "best" league, while 15-20 yrs ago, it was pretty much a given. Major Italian cities'  "politics"/red tape have played a big role, preventing most teams from owning their antiquated stadiums, & hence renovating them.  FFP also kicked in right when both Milan teams were on a downturn, making it that much more difficult to rebound.  Napoli pretty much play in one big public toilet, & Roma have been trying to build a new stadium for 5 yrs now, but both cities won't budget repairs/extensions for both existing stadiums, yet alone build a new one.  Embarrassing for teams of their "caliber" , to play where they play.  It's a sad state of affairs in Serie A, adesso.

Schifo!     :kicksrock:

It's never fully recovered from Calciopoli
Good point; this is also true, to some extent.  The irony being, the only team who has recovered, is the main culprit:  La Vecchia Signora; or as I like to call "her", that rich old c#nt.

eta: as a side note, Calciopoli actually helped Inter, & they were the main protagonists, bringing suit against Milan & Juve.  I feel that was even worse, seeing how much they benefited, & how obviously partisan the prosecution was.

... meanwhile, good ol' Roma just trudged along, constantly placing second, whilst the Northerners kept haggling, & handing the Scudetto back & forth, never letting Roma get a touch.

sigh...to be a Roma fan

Si, but Internazionale's new signing, "Gabigol",  scored the last two, which is nice, if you're a misguided Beneamata fan.

UEFA qualifying for World Cup 2018 kicks off today:

Group C
Azerbaijan at San Marino
Northern Ireland at Czech Republic
Germany at Norway

Group E
Armenia at Denmark
Poland at Kazakjstan
Montenegro at Romania

Group F
Slovenia at Lituania
England at Slovakia
Scotland at Malta

The Big Sam era begins...

Looking forward to Russia '18, the thing I anticipate the most is the "intermingling" of English & Russian fans; it shall be a thing of beauty.

New Orleans Pelicans point guard Jrue Holiday is set to miss the start of the 2016-17 season as his pregnant wife, former U.S. women's national team soccer player Lauren Holiday, has been diagnosed with a brain tumor.

Lauren Holiday, a two-time gold medalist and 2015 World Cup winner, will undergo surgery about six weeks after the birth of the couple's first child. The tumor, which is benign, was found on the right side of her brain in late June.

"Devastating," Jrue Holiday told the New Orleans Times-Picayune of the diagnosis.

The child's due date is in mid-October, but the Holidays plan to induce labor earlier in order to expedite Lauren Holiday's surgery. The couple plans to reside in the Raleigh, North Carolina, area, near the Duke University medical specialists who will handle Lauren Holiday's surgery.

Even so, Jrue Holiday will miss an indefinite number of games while he supports his wife's recovery and cares for their newborn.

"My family comes before basketball," Jrue Holiday told the Times-Picayune. "I'm obviously blessed to play this game and be in the position I am in, but my wife is the most important thing in the world to me. She comes before anything else."

Wow glad it's benign but brain surgery is scary stuff.

I'm convinced England would look the same even if I was coaching them.  It's like they say - let's see how much possession we can have without creating any chances and put all the people watching asleep.

Scotland/ Hull City's own Robert Snodgrass with a quatro!  I love that guy...he plays the #10 as well as an Anglo can.

@Steve Tasker @gianmarco...Gli Azzuri kick off their WC '18 qualifying campaign away to Israel, @ 2:45.

Their new coach, Ventura, has only had a week to work with the players, so will probably have to stay with Conte's old 3-5-2 system, before he implements his own.  That's ok, though, because.............

VERATTI IS BACK!!

@AndresCantorGOL  37m37 minutes ago

BREAKING. El Salvador players just ended a presser. They played a recording of a man that offered them money to beat Canada or lose by 1

@AndresCantorGOL  25m25 minutes ago

According to the man on the recording, the offer to EL Salvador players was:$30 per min played for a win.$20/min for a tie,$15 for a 1-0 loss
Why would they need to be offered money to beat Canada?

Why would they need to be offered money to beat Canada?
The score differential looks kid of meaningless for the group, so this must be focused on just this exact game they want to fix for specific bets.

As for being offered money to beat Canada, I think it is a point spread they are looking at.  If ELS was to be winning by 2 goals, I think the bettors want them to give one back (or try to not score if leading by 1).

per ESPNfc

The Salvador Football Federation confirmed the news on its Facebook page, posting a video and releasing a statement which read: "Players from the national football team revealed this [Monday] afternoon in a news conference a recording of a Salvador businessman Ricardo Padilla offering them "prizes" to win, draw or even lose against their Canada counterparts.

"The news conference took place while in the team's camp in Vancouver, Canada, where tomorrow [Tuesday] a game will take place against the North American opponents.

"According to Padilla, he is acting in representation of a Honduras millionaire that wanted to guarantee the qualification of the Catracha [Honduras] national team."

Mexico lead Group A and have already secured a place in the final round of qualifying, while Honduras are second in the standings, three points clear of Canada, who are third.
