Bad news for Spurs to lose Kane for that long. There's really no way to spin it as positive.
I felt last year that the Spurs really focused on the EPL and that they also got really fortunate with injuries. This year the injuries are starting to occur, and they've now got important must-win CL games to cope with, instead of easy Europe League games that they can give half effort in or play a half B squad.

No - not really in Spurs system. His best position is probably AML, though he is reasonably two-footed enough to play AMR also. In a different system, he can be a 2nd striker, but he does not have the hold-up ability to play as a lone striker.
Spurs caught a lot of flak last year when they failed to sign a back-up striker for Kane - they moved Son from being listed as a MF to a Striker on the team web site. Supporters were not amused.
Having said that, its probably him or Lamela that would play, probably in a false 9 role, if something happened to Janssen.

Well, I didn't really know who he was when I was watching the game replay. I think his glory days preceded my time as a semi-serious fan of world futbol. I'm getting there, though. I'm already on Schurrle's third club, for example.

Spurs will be grinding out games like this past weekend. They are deep enough in the midfield to control games and get their chances. Never fun losing your striker, but I think they'll be fine.
This is a tricky 10 days for Spurs - 4 games: Gillingham in League Cup today, @ Middlesbrough on Saturday, @ CSKA on Tuesday, and home to Man City the following Saturday.
We will know what they are concentrating on at the end of that stretch. Middlesbrough is must win, even on the road, and if they want to advance from the group stage, they must get at least a point in Moscow. Gillingham is a throw away game imo - no damage if they lose - but with rotation, they can't afford to wear players out at Middlesbrough and expect a result at CSKA - so I think we will see a healthy mix of starters and reserves today, then a 75% team on Saturday, and a reasonably strong team on Tuesday. Everyone should be fully rested by the Man City game.
Lost in the Kane news is that Dier and Dembele also picked up small knocks. Poch tried to play them both off as cramps, but both players went for scans on their hamstrings yesterday - won't know much until the weekend, as I doubt they will even be on the bench today. I would not be surprised if both missed the weekend also - and were saved for the Moscow trip - assuming they are healthy...

"Big early season test" does not equal playing Hertha Berlin at home ... C'mon, guy...Big early season test for Bayern today as the Bundesliga has an "Englishe Woche". Bayern hosts Hertha today, and both teams enter 3-0-0 and on top of the table with 9 points. Borussia Dortmnund and Eintracht Frankfurt both won yesterday to get to 3-0-1 and have 9 points as well.
Borussia Dortmund 3-0-1 9 13-3 +10
Bayern München 3-0-0 9 11-1 +10
Hertha Berlin 3-0-0 9 6-1 + 5
Eintracht Frankfurt 3-0-1 9 5-2 + 3
Thus far Berlin has beaten Freiburg 2-1, at Ingolstadt 2-0, Schalke 2-0.
Bayern - Werder Bremen 6-0, at Schalke 2-0, Ingolstadt 3-1
As you can see, only three weeks in, but two common opponents.

When people look at the raw numbers for TV ratings for soccer games, they many times think that soccer tv contracts are way over valued.
While the sponsors certainly care about how many people are watching the game, they also care about "who" is watching the game. The who is termed as demographics.
Soccer has recently(last 6 or so years) had fantastic demographics tied to their albeit smaller total ratings.
Let me give a very recent example between an MLS game on Fox, a MLB game on Fox and a NASCAR Sprint Cup race on NBC.
The most important demographics that the sponsors want is the 18-49 age group.
Here were the raw viewership numbers for the 3 games. Notice that the NASCAR number is the biggest, MLB is second and MLS is 3rd in this group.
MLS regional coverage on FOX: 1298k
MLB regional coverage on FOX: 1680k
NASCAR Sprint Cup race on NBC: 2691k
Now lets look at the exact same events, only focusing on just the 18-49 numbers. Notice how the data has now flipped? While the soccer game had the lowest overall numbers, it had the best numbers in the key demographics.

When Liverpool lost Sturridge, they were inept for the better part of 1.5 seasons. Fortunately for Liverpool, Klopp has changed things to the point where a Sturridge loss truly would be a relatively minor thing, as he benches Sturridge for half the games anyway and a fit and in-form Origi might be preferred by Klopp.
The thing about losing Kane is that we have very little idea of what the Spurs look like without him. He's been a model of consistency and durability over the last two years and I can scarcely remember many games where he didn't play (maybe the Europa league games last year vs Borussia?)
So we really don't know what to expect without Kane. Perhaps they will be fine, but I've seen a lot of teams that heavily rely on a striker (I think it's fair to say that he's a major part of their success last year) that become offensively inept without that striker. Then throw in a bunch of important games and the compounding injuries that usually begin to happen once the backups who don't play as much are forced into a lot of action....and you have a worrisome recipe.

In a related noted, the streaming numbers from a mobile are likely FAR FAR more accurate than the tiny sampling Nielsen has to do for set top boxes.

Divock Origi has a grand total of 22 goals in 114 senior appearances for club and country.
EDIT: I guess 30 in 138 if I include cup matches.

Liverpool's offense with and without Sturridge over the last 9 months hasn't been all that different.
In fact, both Origi and Sturridge frequently get benched together with Firmino put up top.
My point isn't to say that Sturridge isn't good, because he's tremendous. But one of the best things that Klopp has done is that he's changed things from where the offense is not reliant on Daniel Sturridge anymore, which had become a major problem.
Also, down the stretch last year, Klopp chose Origi over Sturridge a number of times in big games. Origi was hot and playing great. This year, Origi hasn't gotten back to that form yet, though he did have a pretty goal yesterday. Still, Sturridge has lost out a few times to Firmino this year..

You're probably right, we can probably afford one week of double game-weeks of a mostly full strength squad. With CL games the week before and the week after this week, Tottenham may not start a full squad.
