FC Barcelona has been invited to play in the 2017 MLS All-Star Game, a source confirmed to World Soccer Talk.

A final decision hasn’t been made yet, but if Barcelona does accept the invitation, it’s very likely that the All-Star Game will be played next summer at Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois.

Barcelona, currently ranked as the second richest club in the world, has to decide first whether they plan on playing exhibition games in Asia or North America next summer. If the club decides to play in Asia, that means it won’t play in the MLS All-Star Game, but there will be an opportunity to play in the 2018 MLS All-Star Game instead.

2018 in Atlanta works for me.

NYCFC building their training grounds about 45 minutes north of the city.  They picked a very nice, underutilized area of the area.  I've ridden past there many times on my bike and it's nice that something is finally going into that site.

http://www.nycfc.com/post/2016/10/05/nycfc-announces-plans-new-training-facility
ah- just past piermont. I wonder which side of the ridge- I'm guessing not facing the river. pretty easy commute from the Bronx, GW bridge willing. also designed by my old boss.

While looking for puns yesterday I noticed PSG is in 3rd place with 2 losses already. Early season fluke or something more?

They didn't look great against Arsenal.

is the WC FC thing part of NYCFC? that training complex- as designed- doesn't seem to have much room for academy or 2nd squad.

working there was a nightmare, but if I had gotten to work on EPL related buildings (vinoly did the MC and Sydney facilities as well) I might have stuck it out. also a high likelihood he gets whatever stadium happens given the already regular affiliation.

Citing the franchise’s promise to be as competitive as possible from Day 1, Atlanta United announced today the team will begin its inaugural campaign in 2017 playing a normalized schedule with a balanced slate of home games across the MLS season. To that end, the club will open play in the spring of 2017 at Georgia Tech’s historic Bobby Dodd Stadium, with home matches played there until Mercedes-Benz Stadium is ready for play next summer. Previously, the club had planned to play its first three months entirely on the road.

They're giving them money and improving the facilities immediately across the road as well.   There's plenty of room to expand there, but I'd sort of be surprised if they wanted an academy there as it's out of the way.

  out of the way from what? IMO, without a stadium it's hard to say what's going to be convenient or not. I figure if I can ride a bike fairly easily there, it's somewhat convenient... unless they're actively looking in Brooklyn- but I thought it was going to be Queens or the Bronx for NYC or LI.

sounds like they're going to fill the hell out of that... and then probably second guess building a "smaller" stadium.

ah, good ol' el tri.

The Mexican football federation (FMF) is set to appeal the fine and warning dished out by FIFA for anti-gay chants from fans during El Tri's World Cup qualifying game in Estadio Azteca on Sept. 6 against Honduras.

The 30,000 Swiss francs ($30,600) fine, announced on Tuesday, was the fifth time within 11 months that FIFA has acted on the chant in games involving Mexico. This time, the FMF has decided to respond, as it did in January of 2016.

"We will fight the sanction because we don't agree with the connotation that FIFA has given the chant," said general secretary Guillermo Cantu in an FMF news release.

The chant in question is directed at opposition goalkeepers as they take goal kicks and first came under the international spotlight in Brazil 2014, when FIFA investigated it at the 2014 World Cup.

However, the disciplinary committee of the organisation decided the chant "is not considered insulting in this specific context."

Cantu stressed that the FMF would continue to support the fight to eradicate discrimination in Mexico.

"We will seek to explain [to FIFA] that the chant in Mexico isn't done with the intention that FIFA has interpreted, and in the Brazil World Cup the disciplinary committee determined that in this context the chant wasn't discriminatory."

Also on Tuesday, the Chilean national team were banned from playing a World Cup qualifier at their home stadium and received a fine because of the repeated discriminatory and unsporting conduct of fans.

I think you are confusing Atlanta with some one else.  They are going to be playing in the huge NFL stadium when it is finished next summer.  They did not build a Soccer Stadium.

thanks andy- yeah, obviously got this mixed up... or really, just mistakenly assumed they were building one.

new football stadium means field turf, yes? too bad if so.

I don't know what they would need facilities-wise to be a full fledged "academy" in that location, but it would be a logistical nightmare as it's not really close to anything.

Basically I have a hard time believing any NYC academy can really be done outside of Randall's Island...I know there are at least 3 entities (PSG, Manhattan Soccer Club, West Side Soccer League) that use the facilities, most on the weekend, but PSG busses kids their during the week.

I also question how much a full-fledged academy is really needed in the city.  Even for the U6s, you can get instruction pretty much any day of the week in Manhattan proper with NYRB "coaches" (West Side Soccer League) or Manhattan Soccer Club (NYCFC affiliate that has seems to have gotten a lot more "professional" the past 2 years with NYCFC involvement).

good stuff, sammy- thanks. I was just assuming a euro-style training grounds where the pros are on the fields near the kids, and it's all in one complex run by the club. I trained at this kind of thing at Aston Villa and Hertha Berlin when I was young. that's why I was wondering if NYCFC is building their pro training facilities there where the kids would go.

eta: and hadn't thought about or knew anything about randall's island at all. with floppinho being a musician/performer/non-athlete... that's a place I won't be seeing any time soon.

and I'm tired/dumb... turf is synthetic, yes?
I should have said "Field Turf" and yes, synthetic but getting better every year it seems.  It will never be grass but then again, you have seen the "grass" field in Cuba :)   Sometimes synthetic is so much better.

From what I have read, unlike the Sounders, Atlanta United is getting some say in what type of field turf gets laid down.

If NYCFC is ever going to have a full fledged academy that's almost by definition where it has to go.  Sort of central and they can dump kids off on 103rd on the East Side to walk over.  PSG and some of the older divisions already do it on a limited basis, so it can be done, but it's a pretty big logistical commitment since you're basically babysitting kids after school when you can just use some of the fields scattered around the city.  NYC may be the one city where it makes more sense for the coaches to go to the players versus the other way around.

It seems that Roma's Sporting Director, Walter Sabatini, is on the outs; & either Sevilla's Monchi  or Atlético's Andrea Berti could replace him.  Fantastic, if true; these are two of the best in the business...

(so that's why it won't happen)

####, that's awesome. Bobby Dodd stadium is right in Midtown, so it's a pretty good location.  Glad to see they aren't playing out in the burbs.

Its been years since I lived in Atlanta - but I suspect their target audience lives in the northern Burbs...
You're probably right, but the Atlanta FC will play in the new stadium downtown. It's being built right next to the Georgia Dome, which will be torn down.  Tech isn't far from there (I've walked it).

The Braves fled to the northern suburbs, so maybe the new soccer team can capitalize on all the revitalization happening closer to the core (see Atlanta Beltline).

In Asia WCQing today, South Korea beat Qatar 3-2

This gives Qatar a perfect 0 points from the first three games in this round of qualifying.

I am unfamiliar with the actual break down of season ticket holder locations but I have read that Atlanta is marketing itself as a regional team and have seen season tickets come in from not only all over the state but in surrounding states as well.

If their long range ultimate goal is being the hub team of the non Florida south then having the stadium in the biggest city makes some good sense I think.

2 goals against what I assume is a WC-bound SK though... don't know if the game was as close as that, but it's not a terrible result.

that said- #### them.

I did not see the game but from the scoring, it must have been a very close game.

Qatar was actually winning 2-1 but SK scored twice in the second half to get the win.

Happily Qatar is now in dead last in their group of 6 teams and already a full 6 points out of 3rd place (which is what is needed to move on to another round of qualifying for Asia).

Top 2 teams in each group advance to WC.   3rd place team in each group play each other and the winner of that game then plays the 4th place team from the Hex in Concacaf.

The next game against Syria at home for Qatar is critical.  If they don't get all 3 points on the 11th, they will be in a VERY deep hole.

Go Syria!!!!

hard to think Syria could even field a team given everything going on there now. #1syriasoccerfan

Not only did SK have to rally from 1-2 down, they had to hold the lead for 30 minutes with a man-down...

This was a fun little time waster - still haven't figured out for whom to vote, as three of my all-time favorites (Batistuta, Ronaldo, Messi) are in the mix:  Favorite Trademark Finish
Some of the videos didn't do the trademark finishes justice.  For instance, they didn't showcase the Romario toe-poke well at all.  By contrast, that was a great video showing the classic Henry move.  Cutting in from the left, opening the hips, and hitting the corner.
