You didn't highlight The Spurs match in the FA Cup - Sinn kept getting left out of the cstu bet when folks were listing who was owed money.  I was hoping the two were related.
damn, I wish I could say it was on purpose.  Just missed them (and I cant really call them a mid level team with mine below them)

They can take 5 in the expansion draft.  My guess is there will be plenty of talent available.
There are always two types available in these expansion drafts:

1) unproven players in MLS, mostly guys that have never gotten enough minutes

2) overpriced veterans who can do the job

My guess is RJ Allen (RB) gets left unprotected by NYCFC.  He's capable and cheap (80K I think).

But yeah, in general, you are correct.

Loving what Atlanta's doing, but have they, you know, signed a defender?  At all?
no defenders yet.  But they have only signed 10 players so far.  They still have at least 18 more roster spots to fill, and that is assuming the youngins like Carleton take up a roster spot and are not shuttled off to USL for another year.

I did read that Atlanta is looking into a trade for Sean Johnson, which would cover them at keeper for a while since they signed the young Greek kid last year.

yeah, someone like Allen would be a nice pick up if left unprotected.  Allen is even cheaper at just $63k.

When are the lists going to be released?
No idea...the draft is next Tues at 2pm, so my guess is sometime after the final.  I believe there is also a mini-transfer window this weekend (for trades and signings like Okoli Dokoli) so clubs can set their rosters, but don't quote me on that.

Allen may be the last guy protected since his salary is so good (he got a raise from 63K this year to 80K next year).

I can't shake that Liverpool game.  What a tough loss.  I love this sport though.

I think Liverpool are at a crossroads right now.  With a couple "easy" fixtures ahead, the opportunity is there to shake this off and quickly move on.  But the concern is that there is no depth at CB, the Coutinho injury is quite impactful, and there are a lot of fixtures coming up this month.

In the next 30 days there are 7 premier league games.  The fixtures come fast.  This is not the time to have a downturn in form.

I found it interesting that Klopp yesterday whisked the team off to Barcelona for a week of training.  I'd imagine he knows what's coming over the next month and he wants to get the team mentally prepared.  The last shocking result was the Burnley loss and the team responded with 2 months of exciting ball and some awesome results.  I'm hoping the same response can come from this loss.
sounds like it was a field trip to watch Barca's style of foosball. Speaking of CB's, you guys can probably take Ivanovich off our hands

somebody... shader? ... was asking about MLS offseason stuff- here ya go, from my daily RBNY email:

Following the conclusion of the MLS Cup Final on Dec. 10, the offseason calendar kicks off immediately with a few major opportunities for player movement within the league, beginning with Sunday’s Half-Day Trade Window.

From 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. ET on Dec. 11, MLS clubs will have the opportunity to make trades for the first time this offseason.

The Half-Day Trade Window will last just three hours, and once shut, no trades involving players will be permitted until the end of the Expansion Draft on Tuesday, Dec. 13.

Players, SuperDraft picks, General and Targeted Allocation Money*, Allocation Rankings** and International Player Slots*** may all be exchanged in trades approved by the MLS League Office, provided all of the necessary rules regarding roster and salary budget compliance are met and the trade is completed during a valid trading period.

* General and Targeted Allocation Money: General Allocation Money (GAM) is money that is available to a club in addition to its salary budget. GAM can be used to:

  • Sign players new to MLS (that is, a player who did not play in MLS during the previous season)
  • Re-sign an existing MLS player
  • Off-set acquisition costs (loan and transfer fees)
  • In connection with the extension of a player’s contract for the second year provided the player was new to MLS in the immediately prior year
  • Reduce the Salary Budget Charge of a Designated Player to a limit of $150,000.
Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) is money used to invest in their roster outside of the player salary budget. TAM can be used in four ways:

  • Clubs may use the funds to sign a new player provided his salary and acquisition costs are more than the maximum salary budget
  • Re-sign an existing player provided he is earning more than the maximum salary budget
  • Use a portion of or all of the available TAM to convert a Designated Player to a non-Designated Player by buying down his salary budget charge to at or below the maximum salary budget charge
  • Trade their TAM to another club.
** Allocation Rankings: The Allocation Process is the mechanism used to determine which MLS Club has first priority to acquire a player listed on the Allocation Ranking List. The list will consist of (i) select U.S. Men’s National Team players, (ii) elite youth U.S. National Team players, or (iii) former MLS players returning to MLS after joining a non-MLS club for a transfer fee greater than $500,000. For the current Allocation Rankings, visit mlssoccer.com/allocation.

*** International Player Slots: In 2016, a total of 160 international roster spots are divided among the 20 clubs. These spots are tradable, in full season increments, such that some clubs may have more than eight and some clubs may have fewer than eight. There is no limit on the number of international roster spots on each club’s roster.

For U.S.-based clubs, any Player who does not qualify as a U.S. Domestic Player in a U.S. Club shall be considered an International Player, and must occupy an international slot on a U.S. Club’s Roster.

For U.S. Clubs, a domestic player is either a U.S. Citizen, a permanent resident (Green Card holder) or the holder of certain other special status (e.g., has been granted refugee or asylum status).  There is no limit as to the number of U.S. Domestic Players on a U.S. Club’s Roster.

2017 MLS preseason begins

Always good to see shovels hitting the ground.

================================

Minnesota United’s new head coach Adrian Heath said last week the club’s proposed soccer stadium in St. Paul’s Midway neighborhood will be one of the best in the U.S. Heath’s prediction took a step closer to reality Tuesday when the Loons announced the stadium’s ground breaking will be Monday.

The event will be ceremonial for the privately financed $150-million stadium but will set up initial prep work to be done on the site at the corner of Interstate 94 and Snelling Avenue. The club plans to provide further construction timeline details on the 20,000-seat structure during Monday’s event, but it remains on track to be open sometime during the 2018 season.

Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber and St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman will attend the 2 p.m. Monday’s event at the stadium site, 415 Pascal St.

So North Carolina FC and Tampa Rowdies *OFFICIALLY* entered the MLS expansion sweepstakes yesterday.
I was just reading an article, which listed 15 cities that are likely to put in a bid to become one of the next 4 expansion cities.

I picture some of the MLS owners sitting around talking about this with Garber doing the Dr Evil "One billion dollars" schtick when talking about expansion fees :)

It looks like San Diego is going to get into the mix as what happened in St Louis is very likely to happen in San Diego if and when the NFL team leaves.

The San Diego State AD was on the radio yesterday. He talked a little but about plans for the Qualcomm site. He mentioned having meetings with a group that is trying to bring the MLS here and sharing a stadium with them.

It makes a lot of sense.  There is going to be a lot of local sponsorship money up for grabs when the Chargers leave.

Coming from a tiny part of the country it is hard for me to understand how big things are out there.  Can 5 MLS teams be fully supported in California? (San Diego, 2 in LA, SJ, and Sacramento?)

As far as LA and SD are concerned I don't see why not.  SJ and Sac are a 6 hour drive north of LA and SD is 2 hours south.  SD often has good crowds at the Q when friendlies are held.  The fear has always been an influx coming across the boarder from Mexico but seriously, if they are buying tickets and spending money who cares?  I think SD would be a prime choice and probably where Chivas USA should have been, not in LA

We would definitely support them. Especially if the Chargers leave. We are always in the top ten in soccer TV ratings. I want to say top 5 more often than not.

The SDSU project sounds really cool. The AD said he wants to create an atmosphere for the football team that is similar to what we have for the basketball team. He wants the football team in a 30,000 seat stadium. I think it will more resemble a college football team playing in a soccer stadium more than the other way around. Could be awesome.

This is one of the better ideas MLS has come up with and it is great to see it increasing again.  This likely means that national revenues are up again this year.  National revenues are what are used to pay the basic salary cap plus all of the various allocation mechanisms MLS has employed.

======================

In the next week, MLS is expected to announce an $8.8 million increase in Targeted Allocation Money over what had been previously earmarked for 2017. That’s an increase of $400,000 per team to $1.2 million per team of TAM for next season.

TAM is a strategic investment that helps teams add or retain players that will make an immediate impact on the field while allowing teams to spend outside of the modest $3.6 million salary budget. It was designed to help teams attract more top talent down the roster outside of the allotted three Designated Player spots.

Recent TAM recipients have included LA Galaxy defender Jelle Van Damme (Best XI, Defender of the Year and Newcomer of the Year finalist), Columbus Crew SC forward Ola Kamara (16 goals, Newcomer of the Year runner-up), D.C. United midfielder Luciano Acosta (three goals, 11 assists) and New York Red Bulls forward Bradley Wright-Phillips (24 goals, Golden Boot winner, MVP runner-up).

Total TAM money for 2016 and ’17 has thus been increased from $33.6 million to $42.4 million league-wide beyond the money committed by the owners in the league's collective bargaining agreement.

This is a cute little story about how Luis Suarez got involved in getting Lodeiro to sign with Seattle

=============

Seattle Sounders attacking midfielder Nicolas Lodeiro credits Barcelona forward Luis Suarez with getting him to the Major League Soccer club.

When the two were playing together for Uruguay at the Copa America Centenario last summer, Lodeiro would be in the Uruguay dressing room in telephone conversations with Sounders GM Garth Lagerway, but Lodeiro told MLS Soccer that he would sometimes struggle to understand Lagerway's English.

Suarez, exasperated by watching Lodeiro's language struggle, hopped on the call to translate for his teammate, who was being offered the chance to move from Argentina side Boca Juniors to the MLS side.

"It was just funny. Nico and I, we talked fairly regularly during the process, in part because it took four months for the thing to play out," Lagerway told MLS Soccer. "And he was in the U.S. for the Copa America with Uruguay, obviously, and in hindsight that ended up being a big deciding factor for him, because he brought his wife and his little son and they got to see America and I think liked it and developed a comfort level with it."

"And I think that's what ultimately pushed them to make the leap, but I was talking and Nico's English is actually pretty, pretty good, but he isn't always so comfortable on the phone," Lagerway said.

"You don't have body language, it's harder than it is straight to the face and so he just got frustrated that he couldn't understand everything that I'm saying.

"And so he says, 'Hold on, speak to my friend,' and I said, 'OK,' and I have no idea what's happening. And Luis Suarez gets on and says, 'Hi, this is Luis Suarez, how are you?' And I'm like, 'Morning, Mr. Suarez, how are you?' And he was our translator."

fringe national teamer? ... another great pickup. I was figuring they'd be getting a bunch of journeymen- decent, dependable journeymen with low ceilings, but decent height floors. of course- they still will. so far, though- fantastic work. hope it plays out on the field... hard not to have high expectations for them, even in their first year.

Parkhurst is very good with the ball at his feet.  Yves is reporting, however, that Guardado is now unlikely.

You know what is strange?  It almost feels like there is just one expansion team starting next year.  Atlanta seems to be generating newsworthy items every couple of days and Minnesota is a quiet as a mouse.  Outside of hiring Heath, very very little seems to be going on there that is not stadium related.

Are they intending to take a good chunk of their USL team to fill out the roster for next year maybe and have les need to make constant moves?

There's no way the league would be OK with that right?  Who are the MLS free agents this year?  Maybe MU tries to collect allocation money and stock up on vets at the markup?

I am not sure the league would care as long as each player they want signs an MLS based contract.   Other expansion teams have brought a small amount of their previous team with them but nothing major in numbers.

But I have no idea if MLS has specific rules about how expansion teams are populated.  With the reduction of the expansion draft, I assume MLS has to allow a wider net to be used since only at max 5 roster slots will be filled by the expansion draft.

I don't think the league has released a formal free agent list yet as they probably have to wait until MLS Cup is finished.  There are a few reddit threads that have taken a rough look, but as you know, while salary information is easy to find, contract length is extremely hit or miss so knowing whose contract is up can be a guessing detective type game.

With so much competition for expansion teams, I just can't believe that the league would be OK with a plan to field a non-competitive team.  It's natural for teams to struggle, but a team playing 5 or 6 guys that were in the USL last year would just look like a team that isn't trying to be competitive.

I think you misunderstood me.  I was not suggesting Minnesota was going to use their USL team to help fill out the starting lineup.  I was more talking about filling out roster slots 20-28ish.  The players that almost never play and/or are loaed out to USL teams most of the year.

After roster slot 18 or so, I don't think the talent difference between an MLS player who does not make a game day roster* and a good USl level player are all that much different.

*except for Mix ;)

==========

FiftyFive. One has learned that a completed deal to make the USL the sole second-division league is 99% complete. The deal wouldn’t involve the NASL becoming a third-division, leaving the league dead in the water. The USSF’s extended deadline would allow any transferring clubs extra time to get their ducks in a row to avoid litigation with non-moving teams. - See more at: http://fiftyfive.one/2016/12/sources-nasl-last-legs-usl-deal-99-complete/#sthash.V9ebhlQb.dpuf

With Ottawa officially moving to the USL, it had an effect on Montreal.  Montreal has closed down their USL reserve team and entered a financial relationship with Ottawa to serve as their reserve team.
