Oh I guess I don't understand the United ticket policy then this year.  I thought more than half of the United games were going to be at Bobby Dodd stadium this year while awaiting the new stadium to finish.

Were you able to buy a ticket package that only included the new stadium games?
LOL - I'm an idiot.  I didn't even pick up on that because my buddy hasn't sent me those details.  I was thinking - why is Andy asking me about GT football.  Again, I'm an idiot.

I'll find out and let you know.  At one time they were still up in the air about whether they would have to start there.  What's nice for me is I can walk to either from work pretty easily.

Hoping Mkhitaryan is able to be back by Boxing Day - would be a big boost.  He was really playing well and starting to play off of Pogba and Ibra.

Mav - you are right, despite not getting too much criticism Rooney still stuck out as being poor among the front 4-5.  I get needing to play him during the busy season but I'd rather see him on to help close out matches rather than him out their to be a match winner.
I am not sure what to think about Rooney.  His touch has been so bad and the appearance of angry at the ref rooney isnt pretty.  Feels like he should be someone to come on for Zlatan late in games with a lead to help see it out.  He works hard and zlatan will need some rest to stay fresh after new years.  But his touch and passing leaves a lot to be desired when you need to hold the ball.  He is better in the air then Fellaini though.  FA Cup games when drawn vs lower division teams maybe?  I don't have faith that he would be a scorer when needed for a match winner like Zlatan is.

Mkhi needs to get back.  The interchanges with him, Ibra, Pogba, Herrera was getting masterful.  I still think their best XI at the moment is a 4-1-4-1 with Carrick behind Pogba and Mata (or Herrera) and Martial and Mkhi wide.

I think Herrera has been fantastic and is unappreciated - something Carrick has faced at times.  I'd leave Pogba and Herrera central and let 3M (Mata, Martial and Miky) rotate on the outside.  You could then leave Schneiderlin as Carrick's backup (still surprised to be saying that) and get Fellaini off the pitch permanently.

Agree on Herrera and Carrick.  Both hugely underrated by United fans.  And I am good with all of that.  Herrera is not as quick on the ball as Mata but is stronger, tackles and tackles harder, and plays def.  He has been playing well in there and has the potential to be as quick and creative as Mata.

Not sure why Schneiderlin is being left out.  He will prob leave in January.  BUT when Carrick needs a rest you can pull Herrera back and Mata goes next to Pogba.

If Schneid is gone, thoughts on the potential of Blind as the heir to Carrick? That's the role he played when he first made the move over.

As Keane said "an injured Schweini > a fit Fellaini".

yeah, I think the initial idea was to go on the road for 3 months and then have all games at home but with some delays in the building schedule they had to change this plan.

I think I read the first new stadium games won't be until the late July early August time frame.

it is worth remembering that while Serie A salaries are lower than the other big leagues, they look worse than they really are in these type of studies because Italy is one of the few countries that releases salary information after taxes have been taken out.
ESPN confirmed today that the study made mistakes when doing the comparison for the reasons I mentioned above

=====================

http://www.espnfc.com/italian-serie-a/story/3019800/study-incorrectly-compared-wages-between-serie-a-and-mls-players

A study that attempted to show that Serie A players earned less than MLS players was incorrect.

The study, as cited by ESPN FC and other outlets last week, claimed that more players in MLS earned over €100,000 ($105,769) per week than in Serie A.

However, the study attempted to compare the gross (pre-tax) salary figures released by the MLS players' union with the net (after tax) salary figures reported in a survey from Italian newspapers Gazzetta dello Sport and Panorama.

After converting the Serie A figures to gross using Italy's top tax rate of 43 percent, there are at least 34 players in the league earning more than €100,000 per week gross.

The official figures from the MLS union show there are only seven players in MLS earned more than $5.5 million in 2016, or €100,000 per week gross, and two of them -- Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard -- recently retired.

makes you feel for some of those guys.  That is likely the end for some in the sport at any sort of higher level.

The 2016 MLS Waiver Draft has passed without a pick being made from the 43 players available.

The Waiver Draft consisted of players who had been waived by their clubs but didn't meet the minimum years of service requirement for the Re-Entry Draft or Free Agency

Under-contract players who were selected in the Waiver Draft would've been automatically added to the drafting club’s roster. Clubs that claimed out-of-contract players would've had to issue a genuine offer to the selected player.

The players not selected are now free to sign with the team of their choice

MLS Statement on Expnasion...looks like they want Miami as the 24th club (LAFC is the 23rd)

The other 4 will come from these 10:

The league acknowledged ownership groups from 10 markets have publicly expressed interest in securing an MLS expansion team: Charlotte, Cincinnati, Detroit, Nashville, Raleigh/Durham, Sacramento, St. Louis, San Antonio, San Diego and Tampa/St. Petersburg.
My guess is you get one from the Cincy/Detroit/Nashville group, one from Charlotte-RDU-San Antonio-Tampa, one from Sacro-San Diego, and a final random (most likely St Louis)

wouldnt surprise me to see STL as one and the TB Rowdies as the other.  I still think SD should get one.

This may break the all time transfer fee record.
Not so far off. Fee believed to be 60m pounds. His wages are supposedly 400k pounds per week which would make him one of the three most expensive players in the world

Nuts. But boy will I miss him.  :(

You used to work at The Varsity? ;)
no - don't know how long you have been in Atlanta, or if its still open - I worked at a law firm that owned the building - looks like a hermetically sealed black glass box - that was directly behind the Cheetah.  The law firm eventually sold the building, but it was amazing how many lawyers would fit in the firm's 3rd floor library around 6:00 each night, which happened to coincide with shift changes...technically I think our address was W. Peachtree - with the Cheetah being on Spring St.

lets break down the Miami situation:

=================================

1) Before Becks signed in 2007, you could barely give away an MLS team for free

2) Becks signs and the owners throw in a perk into his contract, which at the time looked like a fair deal for all involved.  They gave Becks the option to become an owner at a price tag of $25m after he retired.  The hopes being that once he retired and wanted a team the league would grow to the point where teams would be worth more than $25m expansion fee and that Becks would get a good deal on it.

3) That option was set to expire in December of 2015 which gave Becks plenty of time.

4) As the years have passed by, the league grew significantly in popularity and in financial strength.

5) Now we see in this latest release that the expansion fees for the next two teams are going to be $150m and likely will be higher for the 2 teams after this.

6) What once looked like a fair deal for Becks is now an incredible deal, getting a team for $25m while others will gave to spend 6 times as much.

7) So this makes me wonder.... why the owners are being so lenient with him and Miami?  With so much money on the line and Becks first expiration date having passed, I am surprised the owners are not taking a more hard line case realizing that they are leaving up to $125m on the table.

I know many of the owners likely feel Becks was an important reason the league grew as well as it has the last 10 years but these rich guys love their money.

I can't figure this one out....

Of all the groups listed:

Detroit seems to have the most money (Gilbert and Gores are loaded)

Cincy has the biggest local grass roots support.   They are already drawing more than some MLS teams with a 3rd division team.

Sacramento appears to have the best stadium plan in place which includes government backing (all the way up to the mayor Kevin Johnson).

I have no idea how this is all going to shake out.   I can't even believe that the league has come so far so fast that they get to pick and choose from various groups who want to give them $150m................

I think I'm ready to get more serious about soccer watching, however I don't have a team.

If someone could tell me who @The Gator likes the most, then who the team which that team considers it to be their rival I will go with that one.  Ideally will come in with extremely ill-informed points that both irritates and occupies his time.

Your attention to this matter is appreciated.

Liverpool.

Natural rivals are Manchester United and Everton. Man U is the better choice for shtick.

Youll need to learn their best player, Maroune Fellaini. :fro:

My guess they really really want a team in Miami (another super team) and don't have anyone stepping up to the tune of 250 million, so the "difference" between the standard fee and Becks is earmarked for the stadium.  That being said, I don't think they are close to a stadium.

:lmao:

Can someone activate the call tree whenever gator comes in here and flips his ####?

Gator's favorite team is Manchester City and he hates their famous rivals, the Chicago Fire

I picture your reaction to the news the same as your avatar ....

oh my, I know the league gets a ton of government support but this is not sustainable imo.

Buenos Aires (AFP) - Carlos Tevez looks set to pocket 40 million euros ($41.6m) a season -- 20 times what he currently earns at Boca Juniors -- with a transfer to Chinese football, Argentine media said on Thursday.

The striker is negotiating a move to Shanghai Shenhua and would be just the latest big name to be lured to Chinese football for eye-watering sums of money should he make the move early next year.

"At Boca they know that Tevez will go and is sealing a contract with Shanghai Shenhua for two years for $84 million," sports daily Ole said.

the way I understood the Chinese thing... either a single guy or several important politicians are behind the push. when I read about this, the article (sorry- from a long time ago, no links) suggested that it's entirely possible and likely that if/when there's a shift in gov't and those guys are replaced, the bottom (finances) will fall out on that league.

while that may be true- you have to figure this is an amazing way to spark interest in the sport in the country with the most people and giant economy. Imagine if the US got behind MLS like this?

These bids seem like they should go into some different pots

Pretty definite with public funding

  • St Louis
Pretty definite at some point with public funding though I think they'd rather go other places short term (ie 29/30 round when it comes)

  • San Antonio
Holding Pattern combos

  • San Diego - Sacro
  • RDU-Nashville-Charlotte (none of which seem concrete enough to be the 25/26 round)
Money galore, but is the market real

  • Detroit
  • Cincy
We've been there before, but don't really want to go back, but would if everything else falters in the short term

  • Tampa
If I had to bet I'd say the 25th/6th are St. Louis and Detroit with 27th/28th being a Cali city and then whatever looks best in a year's time.  I can't see them turning down St. Louis if the money is there and I can't see them turning down Detroit with Tellem pulling the strings.  It's also pretty obvious they prefer a bunch of these places over Sacro and Tampa, but would do so if everything else fizzles out.  More than anything, I think they put this timeline in place to put off deciding on Sacro and to a Tampa in a bigger queue.

I recall some idiot savant mentioning last year that the sudden excessive Chinese  investiture in signing renowned players to such  excessive contracts was disturbing, & would have a significant impact on the future of world soccer, but he was told it was just " business as usual"...

CMON, GUYS...GERVINHO, FOR CHRIST'S SAKE!

and obviously this is a different China than the one that defaulted on payments to Anelka and Drogba... right?
My historical knowledge of the situation is admittedly spotty, non-existent, actually, but the head cheese over there has made footy a priority for the country. The money they are splashing around is chicken feed in their big picture and I think they could affect European futbol bigly if they want. I'm hesitant to make any specific predictions -- whoever made a buck betting on what the Chinese would do? -- but there's nothing that says a new player with a billion person market can't get into the game.

At first I thought you should go with Everton as United fans rank only below Liverpool fans in terms of #### but then I realized you are just doing this to bug Gator so to hell with it, go United. Also, please remind him about Gerrard slipping and Suarez leaving as often as humanly possible

The real issue in China is that if the next guy in charge of the Government decides against supporting the league, it could collapse over night.  They have no where near the revenue generation needed to support these kind of expenditures.
