looks like Iran is the surprise team in Asian Qualifying.  They look to be in fantastic position to qualify directly while the normal big wigs of Japan, SK and Australia are in a spot where they are fighting to not have to go to the Asian playoff (winner of which plays 4th place from the hex which could be US).

Great organization. Can't wait for them to expand a bit, so I can get involved and get my kids volunteering.

I work just a few blocks away - just one train stop.  Will be heading down there to check it out soon and will try to get some pics.

Soccer continues to poison my brain...

Working on a new mutual fund company at work yesterday called Ashmore.  Every time I read the name, I thought of Rashford.  And then I'd start wondering how much he costs on FIFA 17.   :loco:

Based on the schedule I would expect it to be closer to Salt Lake City or Santa Clara.  Makes no sense to go from SLC to Atl back to Santa Clara then back to DC.  Too many cross country flights. Could see SD, Vegas, Portland, Seattle, Phoenix, maybe Denver?

I thought this was really dumb until I read this comment on reddit and now it makes much more sense to me.

Allowing your fans to vote for "Footy McFooty Face" is just a clever marketing scheme. There's absolutely no way the club will be called that, but it's clever and funny enough that news outlets across your region will pick it up and get a laugh out of it.

Just look at what this has done, a UK website has written an article that's going to get a lot of clicks. This is brilliant from the San Diego perspective, not sure if they meant to do it but it's spread the cause.

 
Yeah, I don't see being derivative as getting the team that much coverage.  But it's going to be a thing anytime you have a web vote now, so just go with it.  I think it will probably be Mission San Diego, which is fine.

Tottenham say they knew that manager Mauricio Pochettino would meet Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu this week.

The pair are reported to have eaten together at a restaurant in the Catalan capital, where Pochettino has a home, as Bartomeu assesses who should succeed Luis Enrique as coach at the end of the season.

Standard Sport understands Spurs were aware the meeting would happen, as they say Pochettino, 45, and Bartomeu, 54, are friends. 

 
UEFA is planning a fairly big change to the way they approach international play.

In the hopes of eliminating all friendlies, they are implementing a complicated system of Nations Leagues with promotion and relegation.  Here is the basic format which will start in 2018

  • The 55 participating teams are split into four leagues, A–B–C–D, according to their strength
  • League A will include the top-ranked teams, League D the lowest-ranked sides
  • Leagues A and B will consist of four groups of three teams
  • League C will comprise one group of three teams and three groups of four sides
  • League D will be formed by four groups of four teams
  • In the first edition of the competition, the participating sides will be classified according to the UEFA national team coefficient rankings (ranking as per 15 November 2017, i.e. conclusion of 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers)
  • In each league, four group winners are promoted (or play in the Final Four, see below) and four teams are relegated for the next competition to be played in 2020
  • The overall UEFA Nations League rankings will determine the composition of the draw pots for the subsequent European Qualifiers
  • In addition, the UEFA Nations League will provide teams with another chance to qualify for the UEFA EURO final tournament, with four sides qualifying through play-off matches which take place in March 2020

Holland lost the 2010 WC final to Spain on an extra time Iniesta goal in South Africa, and were eliminated on penalties by Argentina in the semi-final in 2014.  Under Danny Blind, Holland failed to qualify for the Euro 2016, the first Euro they missed since 1984. They've now fired Blind after losing to Bulgaria in UEFA WC qualifying, putting the Dutch in a very difficult position to qualify for Russia '18. Of course all the old names are cropping up as replacements - van Gaal, Hiddink, deBoer, Koeman.

Since I've been following euro football, the big Dutch clubs have fallen from grace, going from perennial challengers in the European competitions to group stage minnows.

It used to be young Dutch players were always among the most exciting youth prospects around Europe, always in hot demand. With Memphis moving to France, I don't think I can name a single exciting young Dutch prospect. Wijnaldum is good, but closer to 30 than 20, as is Bas Dost.

FIFA has dealt a four-match ban to Lionel Messi after ruling that the Argentina forward verbally abused a match official in a World Cup qualifying game against Chile.

Messi was dealt the ban and a fine by FIFA's disciplinary panel. He will miss four of the Albiceleste's remaining World Cup qualifiers, including the match against Bolivia on Tuesday.

The length seems extreme to me considering Suarez only got 9 games for biting a player in the gdb world cup :rant:

I think this international break, right before the 6-week period where all clubs are about to go on a stretch run in their leagues and in the CL, is one of the most insane things in the sport.

Best part is Smalling hurt Jones then hurt himself.  Jones is made of glass so it was only a matter of time before he got hurt.  I would take him off the list as backup for your point.

 
The Mamadou Sakho-to-Southampton rumors will not die. A Sakho-Yoshida (who scored in the last 24 hours against Thailand -- I don't know if that makes it today, yesterday or tomorrow) CB pairing wouldn't stop many scores but it might be fun to watch Saints get into more 4-3 shootouts.

Sakho is a very good CB.  I don't quite know what he did to Klopp, but since he's started for CP, they've had 3 clean sheets.  I hope that continues so that LIV can at least make some money on him. I'd rather that he stayed around, but I think that ship has sailed.

 
I love Thierry Henry publically lobbying for Arsene's job.  Not at all unbecoming.  Also, I'm just trying to imagine the look of Gallic contempt he can employ when Theo Walcott fluffs a chance. 

 
Atlanta United today announced that forward Josef Martinez is likely to miss approximately 4-6 weeks with a left quad injury. Martinez suffered the injury last week during a call-up with the Venezuelan National Team for 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualification.

 
Brazil is the first team to qualify for the WC (outside of the hosts).

Iran looks very close as well.

Qatar lost both games this round (yes!) and have now fallen out of any chance of an automatic birth and are inches away from full elimination (please oh please)

Sucks - he had started the season on fire - hopefully they let him recovery completely and it's not something that lingers all season.
