Prop 2 fails 47%-53%. And yet, Prop 1, which is tied into the soccer stadium, passes by 20 points.

Unless a plan B magically appears and the $60 mil is made up some other way, MLS to St. Louis is dead.

I'm going to be sick. This city just ####### hates itself and doesn't want to grow.
The only thing you can hope for is that sometimes in these cases, the owners find a way to privatize the money.  $60m is not a huge sum and they obviously wanted the path of least resistance to work but we have seen other times in when stadium votes fail, the owners do find a way.

But many times not either.  I guess we will see what the wording is from the St Louis group soon and can probably judge if it is completely dead or not.

I've gotta think there's a Plan B. I agree that $60 mil shouldn't be an insurmountable hurdle for a guy like Paul Edgerley, former Bain Capital managing director and part-owner of the Boston Celtics and AS Roma.

I'm not going to pretend to know any of the details about this deal, but as a general rule, public funding for stadiums is straight up bull ####.

You just know these wealthy #######s sit around in a group laughing their asses off every time they trick some city into giving them a bunch of $$ for a stadium they could fund themselves.

Good for St. Louis for saying No.

"Setback" does not equal "fatal".

There has to be a Plan B. Scale back the stadium, find another investor, bajillionare ownership group chips in more money. $60 mil shouldn't be a death knell.
eventually the St Louis group themselves need to make a statement.  Until then it is all speculation.

Man I wish every situation turned out like Orlando where the owners were so bullish on the team, that they actually gave money back to the city so that they could maintain full control of all revenues in the new stadium, but that obviously creates significant risk and not every billionaire is willing to do that.

This is something that has to stop and it would be gratifying to see MLS leading the way in doing the right thing -- make it on your own. The vocal minority of sports fans around the country shouldn't be dictating stadium expenditures like this.

Shakespeare is now 6-0. I'm at a loss for a good quote, but that is one hell of a dead cat bounce. Perhaps a sonnet is appropriate at this time.

Shall I compare thee to the Special One?

Thou art less whiny and more temperate

Rough fixtures has spoiled last May's fun

And relegation appeared thou's fate.

Sometimes thy Vardy's goals run dry

And Mahrez's play is but a shade

But what Ranieri lacked you apply

And memories of Tinkermans' sacking fade

With fair N'Didi and Drinkwater

And Morgan and Huth's return to fame

You Foxes are no cannon fodder

And the King Power shouts your name

So long as men can breathe and eyes can see

Will Ramsay use you for parodies

Looks like there is no Plan B.

Less than 12 hours after St. Louis voters rejected a ballot initiative that would have helped pay for a $140 million Major League Soccer stadium downtown, Jim Kavanaugh said the hopeful local ownership group is likely to disband and abandon its plan to bring a franchise here.

With St Louis out and Becks still flailing in Miami, the hopes for the other cities has taken a leap.

There is a chance now that 5 out of the 11 remaining bidders will get in.   And you have to think 1 or 2 more will end up dropping due to finances like St Louis did.

If San Diego can pull off the massive Soccer City plan, (and they are now on the ballot for the end of the year), I have to think they must be a very close candidate.

I feel a bit bad for Sacramento.  They have a ready made fan base with a private funded stadium deal already locked in place and they still seem to be slightly on the outside looking in.

I read on twitter that he is the only coach in EPL history to win his first 5 league games in charge.

From Strauss' update, Charlotte seems pie in the skyish at this point as well and Detroit seems to have a ton of moving parts.

yeah.  The Detroit plan is very risky.  I think when all the dust settles it may easily drop to 8 cities or so battling for the remaining spots.

I have some knowledge that the broadcasters are interested in a central time zone team to be added.  With St Louis out, that should help the San Antonio and the dark horse Nashville bids.

Pirlo to Chelsea, as assistant coach, rumor is starting to float around the webs.

===========

Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, the former Chelsea star and assistant boss said of Pirlo: "I know for a fact he has been around Stamford Bridge on a number of occasions this year.

"He's the one that Antonio Conte would like. He managed him at Juventus until he was 34.

"He is the one he will want to come in [to replace Holland]."

Chelsea would reportedly prefer Conte to bring in a homegrown coach to take over from Holland, who is leaving to become England assistant.

But Wilkins said: "I do believe if he pulls off this Premier League win that he should be able to bring in who he wishes."

Honestly, besides for maybe SD, all the bids seem risky in one form or another.  The good markets all seem to have moving parks on the stadium side and the less prime markets are well, less prime.  At this point, it seems like like they are waiting for SD's vote anyway, so everyone has a bunch of time.

What do you feel is risky in the Sacramento bid?  Is it more related to the small market itself or are there some issues I am unaware of in the ownership group?

ah, I am not familiar with them.  Shady characters?
York's are shady and can't run an NFL team.  Vivek is rich and is willing to spend, but has run the Kings into the ground with a shiny-look at him GM in Vlade Divac.  Neither inspire sport management competence though Vivek may want to buy Ronaldo, Messi, and Pulisic as his DPs.

An ESPN survey was done of more than 6000 Americans, 12 years old and up and asked them who their favorite athlete was.

Two active soccer players were in the top 50 (Messi and the ugly bust guy), but 0 active baseball players made the top 50*.

*Three retired baseball players made the list, Jeter, Rose and Ruth.

Vivek owns the Kings.  He fancies himself an analytical guru because he once coached a youth basketball team that won a bunch because he just pressed the **** out of everyone.  I only vaguely follow the NBA, but he's been fun.

The Yorks own the 49rs.  They replaced Jim Harbaugh with Jim Tomsula.  Good times.

Any chance Nashville gets a bid?  I'm holding off on firm Atlanta allegiance until I find out.
11 cities are left, any where between 4 and 5 teams will be handed out and Nashville is one of the 11.  But even if they get in I assume they won't start for at least 3-4 years so no reason not to at least follow Atlanta (since they seem to have put a great foundation to build off of both on and off the field).

I have learned through much pain that trying to equate an owners success in one sport with another sport is not a straight comparison.

The Krafts could simultaneously be the best NFL owners and the worst MLS owners even though they try and run the two franchises fairly similarly.

You FIFA guys missed your calling:

US Soccer, MLS and Concacaf have finally made a decision on how to handle the Champions League berths the next couple of seasons before they sync back up in 2020

================

The 2018 CCL qualifiers from the USA will come from the 4 clubs that qualified in 2016.

The 2019 CCL qualifiers from the USA will be the 2017 and 2018 MLS Cup champions and the 2017 and 2018 Open Cup champions. In short, the league and cup winners will go.

The 2020 CCL qualifiers from the USA will all come from play in the 2019 season.

Note that due to the reconfig, there is no 2017 CCL for US based teams.
