I saw that yesterday and had the exact same thought.
I didn't see the story, but have been watching the gap between Everton and 8th for several weeks (16 pts ATM) and it says the same thing.

Top seven teams are all +20 goal difference.  No one else is better than (-5).

FIFA rules allow for this I believe. They state a range for length and width with the only caveat  being it can not be square.

ETA, I find it funny that an added 5m x 1m means the pitch will be MUCH larger.
FA rules dictate that all pitches be the same dimension - but older stadiums are given waivers if they cannot fit the dimensions within the stadium

Spurs new stadium will have the same dimensions as Wembley.

ETA -   its 500 sqft bigger - all of it in the middle of the field....

ETA - With Premier League clubs set to benefit from increased revenue due to their record television contracts in 2016/17, there is a strong chance that almost all Premier League clubs will be in the top 30 clubs next year.
bump with link and revenues.

United's Revenue is 689M

I love the relegation system, but still find myself heartbroken for the teams that go down every year.

Gl Hull.

So now, that side of things are set. Just have CL spot still up for grabs.

*Two of the worst teams in MLS, NE and Philly both won 4-0 last night.  Philly even did so on the road.

*Toronto looks to be the real deal so far.  They are on 6 game win streak and doing so with a hobbled Giovinco.  The 6 games have come in just 22 days as well, really testing the teams depth (not an MLS strength by any means)

*I thought Chicago was going to be better this year and they are proving so.  Nice to see them take Seattle to the wood shed in front of their largest in stadium crowd in a long time.

The championship playoff final - the most lucrative game in football - keeps getting bigger and bigger.

The value of promotion to the Premier League this season for clubs that did not get parachute payments will be at least £170million and could reach a minimum £290million if they avoid relegation next year.

The figures, which come from the Deloitte Sports Business Group, are based on the extra revenue the clubs will get from the Premier League's broadcast rights next season and guaranteed parachute payments for two seasons if relegated in 2018.
Of the two promoted teams and four in the playoff, Newcastle and Fulham received parachute payments this year.

The unexpected burst of goals from Arsenal and Liverpool have created a bit of doubt for City now.  Their place looked secure but a 1-0 loss to West Brom would really add to the excitement.

"I always makes me happy when I'm talked about," he told   ESPN Brasil exclusively. "It's good that a great club, like Barcelona, have interest in you because it's recognition of the hard work you're doing."

"Barcelona are one of the best teams in the world. Until now nothing has come directly to me, because if there's anything it goes through my agent. What I have to do is focus on playing because it's my agent that resolves these things."
Welcome to Barça, Coutinho.

I think it was either @Sammy3469or @El Floppo who alluded to this earlier but it does look like we may be coming to the end of Pirlo's career.

From what I can tell he is fully healthy and was left off the 18 man roster for tonight's big game against Dallas.  In fact from what I can tell he did not even make the trip to Dallas.

I don't know if they are planning to have him "retire" (ie buy him out of his contract) or if they are just giving an extended rest but I think this makes 3 games in a row he had not played with no indication that he is injured.

He is making a ton of money (just shy of $6 million) so this is likely to come to end fairly soon I think if they can find a financial solution that helps every one.

Must've been Sammy.

Only thing I've noticed is that the team shape is weaker with him in. They end up using another mf like Tommy Mac to provide cover for him. He pretty clearly can't get up and down the field and doesn't typically have the time or space to find his trademark piercing passes. Games I've watched, he rarely even gets in the ball.

one of my bigger mistakes in predicting how a player would do.

I pictured him being exactly like Valderamma back in the day in terms of controlling the entire game while barely moving but I guess the league has changed since that time period.

That tiny field didn't help his game.

So I drank a lot this weekend, and wound up singing a lot of Chelsea songs as a result... good times.  Anyway, my wife just sent me a text with a bunch of angry emoji  because, apparently, she got a call from my son's nursery school because he was signing a "naughty song about celery" :bag:

I am going to plead ignorance on this one :oldunsure:

I kind of used that as my binky last year as to why he was not impressing but in reality he has been no better in the other 50% of the games he plays away from Yankee Stadium.
Even with all that we pan his defensive ability the results were generally fine when he was fine when he was out there.  FWIW, supposedly they sent him to SLC for Weds game (they have 3 away games in 7 days and with Herrera at the U20 WC, need to plan out when he will play), so they decided to keep him out of the humidity (which supposedly he hates).  The NYCFC sites also infer that his wife has been expecting and it hasn't been the smoothest pregnancy.

Having said all that, my guess is he's still gone this summer, but who knows.  I don't think they expected Ring to be as good as he has been and he likes to be right in front of the back 4 and Herrera has impressed when he gets on the field (Ring picks up a lot of cards, so he's going to miss some games on card accumulation as well).

BTW, Dallas's gut of Hedges/Zimmerman/Acosta is really good.  Granted they are helped a lot since the two wingbacks stayed home on Harrison and Wallace which isolated Villa with Moralez having to come back to get the ball, but that was the first time I've seen Villa neutered like that in awhile.  That was the first game they really missed Matarrita as Sweat's is of no use getting forward and loses guys when the play gets switched when he's on defense (led to the goal and 3 or 4 other good-great chances).  That was also Johnson's best game this year in goal.

EDIT: basically they are playing for ties at Dallas and Orlando and will try to win at SLC.

Well.  And that is that for United.  Europa Champ or bust.  And with their defense in shambols right now, not sure they can do it.

Another lackluster game, highlighted by the poor play of Wayne Rooney.  Sad how the once mighty has fallen.  Even his goal wasn't impressive and on 2nd look could be called an own goal.

I don't understand Jose's lack of use of Martial.  Looked great yesterday, esp after moving to left wing.  Esp when he is so much better then Roo, Fro, Lingard.  Yet they continually get the starting call over him.

@B Maverick

Trabzonspor have opened talks with Manchester United for Marouane Fellaini, the president of the Turkish club says.

United triggered a one-year option in the midfielder's contract in January in order to secure the 29-year-old to the club until the end of the 2017-18 season, and sources told ESPN FC in April that manager Jose Mourinho would like to extend his deal at Old Trafford even further.

But Trabzonspor chief Muharrem Usta believes his club could lure the Belgian away this summer, while they are also chasing CSKA Moscow midfielder Bibras Natkho and Villarreal forward Roberto Soldado.

Sacramento fixed the biggest problem with their MLS bid today.  I hope it was not too late for them to fix such an egregious error

====================================

In a move that could boost Sacramento’s bid for a Major League soccer expansion slot, Republic FC has been acquired by the deep-pocketed investor group leading the expansion bid, the sides announced this morning.

The agreement means Republic FC will be acquired by Sac Soccer & Entertainment Holdings, the group led by Kevin Nagle that filed the bid in January. It also means the Republic FC brand will be part of the MLS bid.

So I'm going to my first MLS game tomorrow.

Sitting in the Supporter's section for Seattle at SKC.  Friend is saving me front row seats in the 'Cauldron' (GA, first come seats).  The same section that pissed off Tim Howard a few weeks back.

Will report back...

That should be fun.  Mid week games in the spring are typically not well attended but that won't be a problem tomorrow night.

Oddsmakers have it 86/14 for Liverpool to take last CL spot.

Have to admit I'm feeling a lot better about things with Lallana and Sturridge back and looking useful.

Still...Milner buries that PK and it would be in the bag already.
