With Matic and Carrick there is no need to keep Fellaini - not that he was worth keeping previously but now it just seems stupid.  Maybe I'm just trying to convince myself he'll be gone.
So far reports are Jose values him to much and he is too important to go and today's is Fro will reevaluate in Jan due to the arrival of Matic...

With 9 players listed over 6'2 including 3 listed at the same height as Fellaini I fail to see why he is considered valuable?  His backers say things like his heading ability and his physicality.  Not sure what they are watching but he is hugely overrated with his head.  And his physicality amounts to throwing elbows and fouling people in dangerous parts of the field.  Even the goal he scored on the weekend was poor.  Free header at the 6 and he hits the only defender between him and the goal, the deflection put it into the side netting past the keeper.

looks like we are entering the yearly "will the NASL survive" period again.

One team out west told the players and supporters there was a strong likelihood their team would fold after the season.  Because of US Soccer various regional rules for Division 2 requirements, losing this team could cause the NASL to lose their Division 2 status.

I have been saying this for 2 years now and I know the politics involved but from the sports point of view, the NASL should just merge with the USL.

Ha! Looks like it did. Weird.
and the tools have the temerity to call you sensitive in that thread :)  .  One of them must have reported the thread like a baby.  Too funny the level of hypocrisy.

So much for the new open policy of telling people why threads are removed if no one told you about it.  At least you did not get suspended :)

The biggest problem for me is that Fellaini doesn't fit how United should be playing considering all the other pieces in the side.  We should NOT be playing long ball, we should be emphasizing quick passes/movement and high pressure.  He has valuable skills that would be better suited on a lower table club.  Also, at this point his reputation proceeds him - he doesn't get the benefit of the doubt (and shouldn't) and is a red card waiting to happen in almost every game he's in.  Relegate him to league cup games if you want but he shouldn't see any league or CL games considering the other options available.

Fixed (added the bolded).  I agree with you on all this.

He comes on and its instantly kick it long to the big fella.  And aside from an occasional chest trap (which he then gives away on his next touch 7/10 times) he doesn't win these, flick them to anyone or do anything of value with them.  He offers no pace in running and no speed of thought or quickness in passing.

He did well at Everton since they used him better (not a DM) and he fit their more traditional Moyes Style. He needs to be back into one of those sides.

How was Kern River?

I have a can of Just Outstanding that will get destroyed soon
Good times. 114 degrees in freaking Bakersfield though. Ugh. I don't know how you live in that place. Dionysus was worth the heat though. killer beers all around from them.

Agreed.

I thought it was good-natured satire of the other thread. I also think it was a more interesting subject. Why do some people believe soccer is still some fledgling sport in this country? That to me is worth more discussion than another thread about flopping and offsides hold the sport back. Not that ether are really that interesting at all.

Right - good catch.  I updated my post. I don't see how you have Miky, Pogba, Mata, Herrera, Lukaku, Martial, and Rashford and then stick that bozo in there.  I'm indifferent on Lindgard - he is what he is but at least he attempts to play a similar style with passing, movement and pressing - he doesn't have the technical ability but has the physical traits.  I really like the attacking options we have - defense is still a big concern IMO.  Bailiy was pretty solid last year - just needs to be more consistent.  I'm not sold on Lindelof yet and feel like he'll struggle.  If Mou can get the backline straightened out it should be a fun season.

Agreed, no reason to plant a tree when you can run out the dynamics of that group.  And Perreira fits in that group too.  He should absolutely get a shot

To me Lindgard is a good squad player.  Youth system guy, still youngish but needs to develop his vision, coordinate his runs better and improve his finishing.  To me hes an Ashley Young, Welbeck type.  Should never be first choice above those you mentioned but can play FA Cup, League Cup games and be depth in case of injury.  I'd keep him.

I think Lindelof will come good sooner then later and Bailley is a stud.  Valencia has become quite a solid RB too.  I am not worried and dont see them worse then last year and that was pretty good.  De Gea helps cover flaws...

Will be interesting to see how they lineup:

                     Lukaku
Martial                           Mkhi
                Pogba Herrera
                       Matic
Blind   Bailley Lindelof  Valencia
                  De Gea

Rashford - Can go in for Martial, Mkhi, Lukaku
Mata in for Mkhi, Herrera
Herrera can move to DM for Matic
Carrick for Matic
Perreira for Herrera, Mkhi
Romero for De Gea
Lingard....

important news released in Detroit today

=================

"While both proposals remain options, I've directed my team to dedicate their time and resources toward attempting to reach a contract with Rock Ventures," Evans said in a statement

=================

Evans is the Wayne County commissioner responsible for the jail site.

Rock Ventures is the Dan Gilbert/ Tom Gores company that wants the jailsite to build an MLS stadium (amongst other things ).  Their proposal will build the jail on another site.

This statement by Evans is the strongest indication to date that they are taking the Rock Venture proposal seriously.  If they come to an agreement I think MLS is a lock to make Detroit an expansion city and cover a big hole in the MLS DMA map.
Where does this leave the Detroit City FC people?

I fear it is going to be very ugly and the very worst part of this bid IMO.

Detroit City has done an amazing job.  They are pulling attendances in the 5-6k range fairly often and that is at the NPSL level.

I originally wanted Gilbert to simply buy them and use their name in the expansion bid and continue to run the NPSL side until they are ready for MLS.  The cost of the team could not be further in the noise compared to the MLS expansion fee and stadium they want to build.

But I think we are just going to end up with an awful situation where the Detroit City hardcore fans are never going to support the MLS team.   In a city Detroit's size you would hope this would not be an issue but every MLS team in the early going thrives on the strength of the supporter groups spreading the word.  It would be awful to lose out on the synergy of fans who know what they are doing.

I think I commented earlier that I saw our local NPSL team - The Milwaukee Torrent - play Detroit City last month.  They had a great traveling group of fans. Singing the whole time, jawing with players and fans, having a great time. They put our supporters group to shame, and let us know about it constantly throughout.  From wikipedia, it looks like Detroit City are through to the semifinals of the NPSL playoff tournament.

Yeah, it seems like a grassroots success story that will end when the big money owners move in on their territory.  I hope Gilbert and Gores do some community outreach to the existing supporters group but it'll never be the same.

it almost feels too late for that.

The outreach should have come even before they put out the public bid.   Not to repeat myself but Gilbert should have just purchased the team outright and ran it.  The fans would have followed almost entirely when the team transitioned to MLS if they kept their name and colors, just as the Sounders, Impact, Timbers and Lions fans all did when the move to MLS came.

Gilbert must want the new team's logo to use Comic Sans

Someone should buy them, move them, and rename them the Dons, imo.

Silva owns Miami FC.  Think of how much more could be accomplished if he joined Becks to get a possible marquee franchise running rather than pumping money into other NASL teams that may be terminally ill.
yikes!

@NipunChopra7 hearing Silva changed his mind about pumping $$$ to NASL teams and will now team up with Beckham. Announcement on Thursday.

Have to wonder if that's a death knell for NASL,

Ironically, local NASL franchise Jacksonville Armada just recently found an owner after being owned by league for Spring season.

the tweet looks unconfirmed.

It is was to happen, the NASL would probably lose their Div 2 certification as he would almost certainly shut down/ merge Miami with Becks.

The "yikes" comment was more how the tweet match my exact thoughts of what I wanted to happen.

It seems like this would be a bigger story if true so I am going to guess it is a rumor that will fizzle.

I just flipped on the NFL channel and they're covering ravens practice.

They have a little Ford patch on their jersey. They biting off the soccer model?

They are not the only ones, did you see the MLB trade the other day the Yankees made? It looked like an MLS trade :)

"The Yanks are also receiving $1.5 million in international bonus pool money."

Oh God, Liverpool could be putting something pretty good together. I think supporters' optimism is totally warranted.

Better news for Liverpool is that Virgil van Dijk has got a pow-wow with Southampton in the diary as he attempts to extricate himself from the hellish prison that is a nice Premier League club in a pleasant coastal city.

As one of our older posters, I can remember back to when receiving my weekly Sports Illustrated in the mail was a highlight as a kid.   Soccer was rarely featured in the magazine but over the years the sport got a few covers sporadically.

Now a days the print magazine means almost nothing accept to some dentist offices so I have not paid attention in a long long time.

But I did see the cover of the latest issue and it caught my eye

That's definitely telling. Neymar has to have decided on the move awhile ago for that cover to be ready. I only hope he's snapped out of it since then. What a universally terrible move for him.

On another note... if you're on twitter give Richard Deitsch a follow fo a week. I think you'll dig some of his stuff. Good coverage of media/ratings and some SI history.

For ratings stuff I also follow @paulsen_smw and @AustinKarp

socks over knees should be an instant disqualifier for a cover photo.
