I had a master list of candidates (about 30-35) and the eventual XI.  I never really tried to narrow the master list into a bench.  Tadic was on the master list.
2016-17 Serbian footballer of the year, man!

Du-San Ta-Dic, wo-o, wo-o

Du-San Ta-Dic, wo-o, wo-o

Second verse, same as the first! C'mon, everybody!

Obviously, Croatia was the biggest supplier of the team, but I was a bit surprised to find that Serbia was a bit bare.  More in line with Montenegro and Slovenia than with Croatia and Bosnia.

Speaking of terrace chants, LOL at the racism controversy over the Man U fans' ode to Lukaku's big ****.

Incidentally, I learned how to make musical note emojis this morning, I will heretofore "sing" lots of stupid crap in the footy threads.

I wonder if ♫ How long, how long, Shane Long ♫ is a backhanded compliment of the Schlonger's schlong.

Please share.

I don't want to have to find this post to Copy-Paste every time I want to write ♫ Na Na Na!  Giroud! ♫

That kinda hits home. I laugh out loud all the time watching futbol, everything is just funny and delightful. The NFL does not, and never will, understand the whimsical joy of sports.
They made a big mistake trying to quiet the Chad Johnson, Terrell Owens, etc.

   I don't know if Batshuayi will ever be good enough to be the main striker for Chelsea, but he seems like a fun guy - I don't mind rooting for him to be successful.

He has been involved in a little twitter banter with EA over his FIFA rankings

Unhappy MB to EASports - Please explain

EASports responds - Keep scoring goals and we'll talk...

Batshuayi scores a hat trick this week - and fires off a tweet to EASports - Can we talk now fam...???  (I'm ignoring the Troopz reference for now... you know what I am saying blud?)

EASports responds with new player card - making him the highest rated player in the game

Oops. This one seems racist too.

Love is in the air....

================================

Forlán: "Cavani deserves respect, he's been scoring for years & taking penalties. Neymar wouldn't have done it to Messi. He was like a boy annoying him. A problem, those things happen on all teams. What doesn't make sense is Alves didn't give the ball to Cavani but to Neymar as if he was his #####."

==================

Dani Alves responds to Diego Forlan: "And just so you know, the last PSG free kick goal was scored by me... so shut the #### up and stop using my name for controversy."

I think among some fans, part of the appeal of futbol is that it isn't something steeped in our culture the way baseball and football are.  Which is one reason we have eurosnobs (guilty) and supporters groups trying to astroturf European traditions in the stands.  Even as a kid, I remember being delighted at the way soccer teams that I casually heard about were named.  "Crystal Palace?  Nottingham Forest, like in Robin Hood?"

I think there's another reason why soccer (and hockey) are exciting in a way that I don't find football consistently exciting.  And it somewhat counter-intuitively has to do with scoring.  The conventional complaint in America is that soccer is boring because it is low scoring.  But in soccer, a goal can come at any time.  It's pretty much always a surprise unless it's a PK.  In football, a lot of scores seem inevitable.  They come at the end of long, methodical drives.  So they punch it in at the goal line, run a fade, or make a kick.  It's scoring, but it isn't exciting in the way that a long score or a pick six is.  Maybe not to the extent of basketball, but scoring in football doesn't feel special.

He was a beast for me in FIFA 17.  :nerd:

Costa to Atlético is official. He'll transfer in January and be eligible for CL play assuming Atlético make it out of group.

Good pickup as also looks like they need some attacking help.  Costa up top allows for quite a few combinations up top with Griezmann, Correa, Carrasco, and Gaitán.  Midfield of Koke, Gabi, and Saúl if 3 up front, or pulling Corea, Carrasco, or Gaitán back into the midfield if they want to go 4 across the midfield. I don't see Atlético ever going to a back 3 even if they have 3 quality CBs in Godín, Giménez, and Savic.

The NASL suit is not going well.  It is starting to come out that some of the NASL owners do not support the suit and were not even consulted before the suit was issued.

I assume those are the teams that still want to be a part of the landscape once the bridges are burned

To be fair, the last card is his player card.  Any pro that wants one can request theirself on a card with really high stats.  This blue card is his card.

I do think Bat####inyoueye is pretty fun to follow for the banter.

This looks like a great signing by Nashville as this guy comes highly recommended from a strong MLS club.  It also seems to indicate Nashville thinks they have a real shot at the expansion bid.

I read that its a loan-to-buy, and he can play right away.

what was the problem at cheslea again? not enough guaranteed starting time?

thought he was great for them- even though he was also great at playing the villain role.
He was great, but never seemed to like London or Chelsea or the PL. Almost as soon as he joined, there were rumors he was unhappy and wanted to go back to AtM and Spain.  Conte didn't like it and they reportedly did not get along. He was a great villain and a great Chelsea player. I personally loved watching him play.

Yes to all this. Forest needs to get promoted just for the potentially awesome joke material.

puksas award nominees are up...

I voted. IMO, two choices... but there a couple others that are pretty swanky.

gk bike? come on... nothing can touch that- even giroud's nutty back heel. others I liked... barca b-teamer slicing and dicing bwb b teamers, bike on the full volley off a corner, first time more than midfield volley off the gk's poor clearance. surprised mkterian's even nuttier backheel/scorpion didn't make it

I see that an Arsenal player is nominated for an award to be decided by public vote.

Congratulations on winning the Puskas, Olvier.

Took the fam to DC United tonight to see RFK one last time and expose them to the game.  Perfect weather, decent crowd (22k?).

Crappy, scrappy 1st half.  0-0

DCU played better in the 2nd, but it was still scoreless at around 55 min mark.  Wife and kids go for bathroom break and drinks and a player who had zero goals in 731 minutes previously banged in a hat trick before they got back in the 70th or so.

Luckily he scored a 4th late on that they actually got to see.

the combined distanced on his first three goals was like 7 yards :)

The 4th was really nice.

I noticed the crowd was much bigger than normal, I think they listed it over 25k.  Was this the last game ever at RFK or was there another reason for the crowd?

Kids Night and next to last RFK match.  Suspect the finale might be even better attended.
I heard they had a fire in the upper decks yesterday but got it under control.  That poor old stadium. :)

They won't be moving into the new stadium I think until next summer so they either need to find a temporary home like Atlanta did, or they will be playing away for like 12 straight games.

Will RFK still be standing next spring?

A few MLS tidbits

* Almiron will be out at least 3 weeks with a hamstring injury

* Diego Valeri has scored in 9 straight games.  Previous record was 7.  He is also the first MLS midfielder in history to score 20 goals in a season

* NYCFC recorded their smallest crowd ever with the rescheduled game in Conn.  Announced attendance was just above 10k

* Only 1 team in MLS has secured more points at home than NE this year and yet NE is looking up at 16 teams in the standings due to their awesome 0-3-12 (WTL) away form.

* Speaking of away form, only 1 team in MLS has more wins than losses on the road this year.
