the key for me will continue to be the transfer fees.
This wonderful evolution is going to come crashing down some day if we can't figure out how to get nominal transfer fees for these kids who move on to Europe, to continue to feed the development system.
The amount of players who get developed and then leave for free is way too high right now to sustain the system.

I am unsure what this is referring to.
But in any case I was talking about the US child labor laws which continue to confuse the situation for all involved when it comes to transfer fees.
I use Sling since it has a few different channels like Bein, FSC, NBCSN, and TNT. All the ESPN stuff. Also Redzone for Fantasy football. I think I pay $55 with the Cloud DVR added

eta: I have ESPN plus as well. Only thing I can't get are FC Cincinnati games because of that stupid FloSports deal and my antenna doesn't want to pick up the local channel they're on.

SEM has nothing to do with the situation, imo. Heck, if it wasn't for SEM, we would not even have a single academy in the country, much less every team having one with millions and millions every year being spent in development by MLS.

for home grown players, each team keeps 100% of the transfer fee.
The rules state you can only use a small amount of the transfer fee to be applied to the salary cap, but the rest can be plowed back into development, facilities or even a DP player, how ever the team wants to use the money.
The problem is that most home grown players are not professional yet, and can walk at any time for free, which is how players like Swag, Sargent, Ledezma, Mendez and many others all left for free.

it is a complete mess.
1) Agents are telling the kids not to sign pro contracts as they will have more ability to move to Germany of whose teams are more than happy to grab a young Yank for free
2) With out a pro contract in the US, you can't sell a player
3) The fix is "easy" but not cheap. Teams have to be willing now to over pay kids who may not be anywhere near ready for MLS play but once they sign, they eat up valuable space on the roster
4) The Alphonso Davies transfer to Bayern seems to have given many MLS teams the impetus to sign many more young academy players. Only time will tell if it works out financially.
5) The child labor laws seem to come into more of an effect for the solidarity payments, which are just as important as the transfer fees in the long term view of development. I think this is an area they could fix, but Fifa so far won't help as they keep ruling against the youth clubs in the US.
#5 has become almost farcical. There is a story of a Euro teams director (I forget which team/player) not knowing whom to send the solidarity payment to for a player they signed from MLS so they sent the fee to the MLS team that the player was on. The MLS team sent the money right back instead of passing it down. I remember the Euro director being interviewed and he was flabbergasted. He said in all his years he had never seen any money returned in soccer for any reason

#1 - #3 all seem like: if MLS was paying them their market value they'd be a lot more likely to sign, stay and develop here. If they can't do that, they can't fix it.
#5 is actually what I was thinking of. Didn't realize it was youth clubs, not MLS clubs, getting hosed.

I am not sure if you have been following the long term case of Crossfire and Yedlin but it is an interesting one. FIFA still has not ruled on it as they delayed the ruling again due to some conflict of interest BS>

I don't think market value works. Kids will not stay in an MLS academy for the same pay that they could play in a German academy. The MLS teams have to pay much more than market value for the younger players, which is why it is not a simple thing to do financially.
If this was an easy financial risk to take, MLS would create some set of new rules to allow a ton of home grown players to be signed with no effects on the rosters but the financial risks are big when you have to over invest financially in players 14-17 years old. One Alphonso Davies certainly makes the risk worth taking but that is a once in 10 year type player.
I am sure a ton of bean counting is going on. All I know is things are getting better. More young players are signing with MLS and more young players are getting first team action. We probably won't know the true fall out for many many more years though.

Cool. But a bit strange- he went down and then looked to the ref for the call, which he got. So have to assume the other teams protestations got him to change his mind. Also...how many different cameras do they have on a u14 game?

IMO... if he wasn't diving there, and is being the "cool do what's right" guy, he's immediately busting his ### to get back up and go to goal... not laying on his belly looking at the ref. nice gesture after the fact, which I'm not trying to minimize...too much.I assumed he looked at the ref because he heard a whistle.

A lot of people point to Crew Stadium as the first soccer specific stadium in the US but in reality Blackbaud got built and used first just before Crew Stadium opened in 1999.

The USL League One kicks off its inaugural season this weekend, after being announced about 2 years ago. This league was initially identified as "USL Division III" and I think is considered essentially one level in the hierarchy below the USL Championship, which itself is probably 2-3 notches below MLS. One of the 10 teams in the league is Forward Madison in Wisconsin, who have some nifty kits and a really active social media department. They just announced a friendly in May against Herta BSC, currently 10th in the Bundesliga. This in addition to existing friendlies against a Liga MX team (Querétaro) and a game against the Minnesota MLS team. The Forward have already lost an exhibition to the Creighton men's soccer team 4-1, so it should be interesting to see how they fare against Herta, one of the oldest, most established clubs in Germany.

I am excited for him. Still need a director of football, after all SAF had David Gill working that side of things. They left together and Gill leaving hurt as much as SAF. 3 year deal, lets now back him in the summer. Need right sided attackers and depth at all defender spots.

Then yes, def go after him. United needs a right sided attacker. Someone that can interchange with but also can keep the width. Mata and Lingard spend too much time in the center of the park and the majority of attacks go down the left. Open up the right....

If Mata wants to leave, I think you have to let him. Big fan but age and time may mean goodbye. Let the youth come up and play that role.
Sell Darmien, Rojo, Jones, Sanchez.
Smalling has been better but wouldn't mind buying a better partner for Lindelof and having Smalling and Bailey as 3/4. I think Bailley has the most potential to be their best CB but he hasn't shown it.
Buy 2 more outside backs to backup Shaw and Dalot.
Young can be kept as a jack of all trades guy you need in a pinch, but he shouldn't be first choice anything.
If you can improve holding MF, then go for it. But give McTominay a shot, he has shown he could be the answer there.
Sancho going to be way too overpriced, especially to go to an English club. I'd say United should pass on him. Sometimes we need to learn from mistakes of our past. We needed a play making midfield a number of years back, so what do we do, go after Dortmund playamaka Kagawa. Bust. Then a few years later we need an attacking midfielder to compliment our strikers, so what do we do? Of course go back to Dortmund to get Miky. Bust number 2. Sancho is really good, but I think he fits into the Dortmund system moreso than he is a great player in the making. Lots of guys come over from Dortmund and their games just do not translate to the English game. The guys that are best, go to Bayern. Simple as that.
