If I had more time I'd do an epic Hipple of the entire thread during my absence, but for now I'll just point you to the same type of injury to Wayne Rooney a few years ago.  Gashed his leg wide open.
So is banning metal studs worth pursuing?

Also, while it wouldn’t have helped in this example , requiring players to wear a shin guard slightly larger  than the credit card sized ones many seem to wear at the pro levels?

Your round of 16 I'm the u17 wc (Mex beat the Solomon Islands 8-0 to advance)

Angola v S Korea

Nigeria v Netherland

Japan v Mex (us tied Japan, who took the group with a win v Senegal...this result will be interesting- Mex is a pretty tough and unlucky matchup for a group winner)

Spain v Senegal

 Brazil v Chile

 France v Australia

Ecuador v Italy

Argentina v Paraguay

ETA... I think Andy pointed out that the US had their worst ever showing, with only 1 goal and 1 point. It's a banner time to be a US fan
Your round of 8

S Korea v Mex

Spain v France

Netherlands v Paraguay/Argentina (today)

Brazil v Ecuador/Italy (today)

@GaryLineker

Robert Lewandowski has scored in every Champions League game and every Bundesliga game this season.

21 goals in 17 games so far.  just sick.......

Epic run. Probably still won't even sniff ballon d'or
I have talked about this before, but I think he is cursed with the "he only scores goals" stigma which keeps him just out of the ultra elite status.

I wish any of the teams I follow would have a player with this same curse :kicksrock:

This run he's on is all-time worthy...and it only adds to an already incredible legacy.

My comment was more about FIFA wanting to give it to the usual suspects, even if Lew deserves something for the...you know...effort.

He’s never made the first team FIFPro World XI.

Kind of amazing for a guy who’s scored .76 goals/game over the last 9 seasons.

Adama Traore has committed himself to play for Mali as an international.

This should make for some fun for the announcers and shirt makers as there are already two other Adama Traore's who are international players for Mali :)

Par came back from 0-2 to win 3-2 and advance to play the dutch

Italy squeeked by Ecuador on a late, close to 40 yard bending screamer free kick to play Brazil.

The racist ultras in Italy have done the impossible.  They have made Mario Balotelli look both sympathetic and level headed.

What a mess :(

That's a weird scene. I thought I read that even his own coach denies hearing anything other than the usual whistles and yelling...instead of just supporting his player.

The MLSPA had a brief telephone press conference last night and they stated what their highest priorities were for the upcoming CBA.

=======

*Higher wages. In 2019, a senior level, non-DP had an average salary of almost $350,000;

*Simplification of compensation, which means elimination of Designated Players, Targeted Allocation Money and General Allocation Money;

*Increase in charter flights for games. Teams are allowed a maximum of four per season under the current CBA;

*Relaxed qualifications for free agency. The current CBA requires players to be at least 28 years old or have at least eight years in the league and not be under contract;

*Shared revenue from media rights deals. New deals will start in 2023. The current deal was worth $90 million

Holy crap.  CBS has been the long last hold out when it comes to broadcasting soccer among the major networks.

That ended 12 minutes ago as they won the English language US rights to the UEFA Champions League.  I thought for sure ESPN was going to grab these for ESPN+.

CBS intends to broadcast games on the mother channel, CBSSN and CBS All Access OTT(this is their streaming service).

Univison won the Spanish rights for the US.

50% increase per year over the current deal!  That's big.  That's a sign that soccer is really starting to take hold, especially since the UCL is generally a midweek morning/early afternoon schedule.

RB Leipzig have formally made an offer for RB Salzburg's Erling Haaland.

This is the kid that's tearing up the Austrian BL and the Champion's League.

Even if RB doesn't move him to the "parent" team, he's likely gonna get sold for an assload of money this summer(if not this winter).  It'll be interesting to see how Marsch handles losing his superstar.

SOCCER SCOOP: UEFA is eyeing New York as the host market for the 2024 Champions League Final. If it happens, it'll be the first time the event is held outside of Europe.

I'm guessing FIFA is thinking this would help generate interest for 2026 in the US?

first La Liga now this.  NFL is a bad influence already.  Don't tell the NFL they could have the SB at Spurs stadium.

I don't think FIFA has any say or even cares.  They know that 2026 needs no help.  25 years ago when soccer was literally nothing in the US, we still set an attendance record for the WC.  Now more than three decades later by the time 2026 comes , promotion is not really needed.

The only thing FIFA is trying to figure out is just how moronic they can make the ticket prices.

Jacksonville has the first right to move their team to London.  If that ever happens, I think we are assured of a Super Bowl in London in our life time..

I would love to see Phoenix's dollar beer night make it to MLS :)

@GrantWahl

MLS expansion update: Don Garber says Charlotte "has done a lot of work to move their bid to the front of the line" to become MLS's 30th team. Competing with Las Vegas and Phoenix right now. Announcement could come in the next couple months

From bbc, some phrases from around the world. We used "salad" (pronounced like Salah, with emphasising on 2nd syllable and a D) in college, but I never knew where it came from. We had a bunch of Jamaicans, so it finally makes sense.

1. Lepkevadász – Butterfly hunter (Hungary)

The cross comes into the box. This should be an easy one for the goalkeeper… but he’s got nowhere near it! He was flapping his hands all over the place – looks like we have a butterfly hunter between the posts!

2. Kukanyaga nyoka – To step on a snake (Kenya)

The ball’s loose. It falls invitingly for the striker. He’s surely going to score here… but no! He's stepped on a snake – he's missed his kick completely!

3. Armario – Wardrobe (Spain)

It’s pinball in the penalty area now. Luckily this lot have got a bruising centre-back – a proper wardrobe – and he shoves an opponent out of the way before clearing the ball to safety.

Pigeon’s wing and tree illustrations by Dan Leydon.

4. Stofzuiger – Vacuum cleaner (Netherlands)

Neat work from the holding midfielder – he hoovers up the loose ball and moves it on to a team-mate. Every side could do with a vacuum cleaner like him in their ranks to keep things tidy in midfield.

5. Shireitō – Control tower (Japan)

Here’s the control tower – the central midfielder who seems to have an aerial view of proceedings and knows exactly where the ball needs to go. He takes a touch and sprays a pass out to the left wing.

6. Smörpassning – Butter pass (Sweden)

Oh, what a smooth pass that was! The winger didn’t even need to break stride! That was a butter pass if ever I’ve seen one.

7. Deff ko watt – To give someone a haircut (Senegal)

The winger is quickly closed down by an opponent, but he takes him out of the game! Fantastic skill. The defender charged in and he flicked the ball right over his head – he gave him a haircut!

8. Ddong-ball – Poop ball (South Korea)

Great cross into the box, but that’s a total miskick from the striker! Aimed right and the ball went left – a real poop ball.

9. Salad – Nutmeg (Jamaica)

One of the midfielders has kept the ball in play and oh, what a clever piece of skill! An opponent charged in, but he managed to slip the ball between his legs and collect it on the other side. Lovely little salad.

10. Aile de pigeon – Pigeon’s wing (France)

The midfielder plays an aerial pass to a team-mate. It’s a little bit behind him, but that’s great improvisation! He produces a pigeon’s wing to help the ball on – lifting his foot out to one side and using his heel to volley the ball to a colleague. Superb technique!

11. Derevo – Tree (Russia)

The forward attempts to control the ball, but oh dear! It hits him on the shin and bounces away. This guy’s got no technique whatsoever – he’s an absolute tree.

12. Bananenflanke – Banana cross (Germany)

Luckily one of the full-backs was following up and he wraps his foot around the ball, curling a banana cross towards the back post…

13. Buffelstoot – Buffalo push (Belgium)

The centre-forward has timed his run to perfection! He leaps into the air and meets the ball with a thumping header – a right buffalo push!

14. Mazhariya – Vase (Saudi Arabia)

The goalkeeper’s rooted to the spot! He’s standing there like a vase!

15. Onde dorme a coruja – Where the owl sleeps (Brazil)

WHAT A GOAL! Beautiful cross, emphatic header, keeper motionless, and the ball sails into the top corner – right where the owl sleeps

We all used "banana kick" instead of banana cross when I was a kid in youth leagues.  Ale Moreno calls the top corner "where the spiders lay their eggs."

LOL at "poop ball" and "tree."  It's like an entire language of terms invented to describe Gyasi Zardes' game.

scored again today against Dortmund.

Seeing what Messi, Ronaldo, Suarez and now Lewondowski are doing on the wrong side of 30, we may need to start adjusting our "prime" years window.

The gap between 4th and 5th in the EPL is already 8 points and Man City have a game in hand sitting in 4th.  The gap could grow easily to 9 points after only 12 games played.  That seems huge for this spot in the table.

Pulled from a Toronto article today.  When reading this snippet, remember that Forbes does not count physical assets like stadiums and training facilities into their valuations....

=========

That’s what’s happened with this league. When MLSE invested $10 million in an expansion team years ago, I told one of the leaders at MLSE they were wasting their money, that they would be out of business within five years.

They laughed at me then — and are still laughing. Laughing all the way to the bank.

MLSE paid $10 million for the expansion franchise in 2006. I figured they would be out of business, like previous Toronto teams, previous leagues, in quick fashion. That was the history of soccer in Toronto.

According to Forbes magazine, the franchise is now worth $395 million U.S. — the fifth-highest in MLS. The league’s most expensive franchise is Atlanta United at $500 million — which is greater than some NHL teams.

He has to be one of the hottest talents from the mid tier leagues looking to make a jump.  I can only picture Jesse Marsch begging the front office that if they have to sell him, get a huge fee for him.
Seems likely RB Leipzig has the inside track, and I’m not sure whether they pay FMV, but I suppose the player has something to say about where he goes.

RBL got Adams from RBNY for a ridiculously low fee, especially given how he walked into the lineup so it would not shock me if they do it again, since these teams are all in the same "family".

But a low fee really screws RBA IMO, probably even more than RBNY since Harland's value is significantly higher than Adams was..

Your round of 8

S Korea v Mex

Spain v France

Netherlands v Paraguay/Argentina (today)

Brazil v Ecuador/Italy (today)
Semis...

Mex (1-0) vs Netherland (4-1)

Other quarters are today.

Mex keep figuring out how to make their youth advance. With the USs seeming advancement of player pool quality through the academies, it's even more disappointing how badly they're doing when it matters. The players are getting better (at least LCD) and the teams are doing worse.

And the top 4 are flying (although City has hit a bump or two of late).  Its too early to declare spots wrapped up, esp since the return fixtures can cause anything to happen but it would be surprising if the top 4 now are not the top 4 at the end.  Can Sheffield keep it up?  Will Liverpool lose a game?

3 points separate 5th and 15th....
