I know most of you won't care because Liverpool, but while Brewster has soaked up a lot of the attention in the LFC youth ranks, I think Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott may be the better players.  Jones looks like he's got a solid chance to be an on-the-ball 8 in the 4-3-3 while Elliott is probably a left wing in Klopp's system (he may be a more naturally a 10).

Oooh... and just in... very happy to see Liverpool are starting a heavily rotated side vs Monterray:

------------Alisson
Milner Gomez Henderson Robertson
--------Ox Lallana Keita
-------Salah Origi Shaqiri

Presumably Salah was given the start because of his popularity in the region.

Milner, Henderson and Lallana in the back six should make for an open game.

FOCUSING ON EVERYTHING ELSE

Is that today? there seems to be another game today as well that is drawing all do the attention

yeah, Everton v Leicester has the makings of a classic
Everton gets the equalizer at the death and then loses in PKs.  More classico then that boring 0-0 in Spain.

And as a result, Leicester gets a semi final date with Aston Villa while its derby day at Old Trafford in the other semi. Oh and its a home and home series so why not play city for the $, i mean right to go to the finals.

Monterrey played very well vs a makeshift Liverpool side and probably deserved to win, but Mane, TA-A and Firmino came on as subs and TA-A fed Firmino for the winner in injury time after some fantastic play by Salah to get the ball deep and hold it.

Expect another cobble-together side (including some youth players) for the final, and for Flamengo to put Liverpool away instead of getting a moral victory.

Sounds terrible

I suspect Klopp will treat this like a final and the only rotation will be that which is necessary due to injury.

I feel like you're trying to circumnavigate the cursing filter here...or maybe not.

I'm sure they'd like to win, but I think they're just trying to get back to England without losing anyone to injury.  I bet he rotates the side big time so that none of the starters play the bulk of both games.  Or as few as possible.

So Mane and Firmino back in while Salah sits.  VvD maybe returns.  Robbo sits and Milner swaps sides with TA-A returning.  Wouldn't be surprised if Curtis Jones or Harvey Elliott got minutes.

TA-A

Arteta to Arsenal done.  Except he won't take over until after this weekends games... reportedly.

It’s a final.  Full strength side today.

Very nice signing by Miami to get Diego Alonso as head coach.  He already has multiple titles in Liga MX and I believe is the only coach to have won the CCL with two different clubs.

If Liverpool are going to banana peel it, this is where it happens.  The next four league matches are vs 5,6,7,8.

After 1/23 they don't play a top-8 team again for 10 weeks (@City [3], vs Chelsea[4], vs Arsenal [10] in April/May).

They showed a neat stat at some point over the festive season games: the last 3 teams to be top of the table at xmas and not win the league are all Liverpool. Just thought I'd share.

It was a lot more fun making jokes about Liverpool's chronic underachieving but it's undeniable that they're awfully good right now. The way they just flicked away a very decent Leicester team was scary. The Guardian had Mane and Virgil in their top 5 footballers of 2019 and while that might be too high, those two guys are playing lights out. I kinda hate that.

Let's say something good about Wolves. Yeah, they run funny, with their arms all weird and their heads down, and they go in the crapper too often against the lower half, but they play cohesive defense and pass really well and you know if you keep moving after you make a pass that you'll get it back in position to do something with it. I try never to miss them when they're playing somebody good.

Saints have apparently ingested the correct type and amount of drugs over the holidays.

The games against Atlético will be fun if Atleti is healthy at the back.  Pool looks only vulnerable (if you could even say that) to counter attacks, and looks deadly in all other aspects.  Atleti is still a decent counter attacking team and can still hold down a quality offense (see the 1 goal loss to Barça Messi and the 0-0 draw with Real).  Liverpool have to be big favorites, but it wasn't a great draw for them obviously.

Gotta say, Liverpool seem pretty organized against counters. Can't defend all of them, but I've been really impressed how quickly they get numbers back in organized blocks to defend the break.

17-2-1; 48/22 (+26) and two clean sheets in the first 20 (real) games.

8-0-0; 17/1 (+16) and seven clean sheets in the last eight matches.

Programming Alert: In case you weren’t aware like I wasn’t until a minute ago, ESPN+ is carrying the FA Cup games tomorrow. I plan on getting up early and watching the Newcastle MASH Unit try not to lose to Rochdale.

Was listening to a discussion about Liverpool's season this morning and what we might see going forward.  The lead in was an overheard conversation between a LP and Arsenal Fan.  Arsenal fan going on about the Invincibles and their greatness and the Liverpool fan not really caring about matching that.  Next came the thought that winning the EPL and CL could be done and how they might go about it.  Sounded like suggesting they throw away the FA Cup and concentrate on the CL, since the EPL is pretty much theirs.

Then of course the topic of best team ever came up. That discussion has come up a lot lately with City and Liverpools record breaking seasons going on the last couple.  Which brings in the Invincibles and the United Treble.

With them having to lose 5 of 19 in the league and City or LC having to be perfect to not win the league title, seems silly to not go for the treble.  Esp with how well they are playing right now.

My buddy who is a supporter, is all about the EPL title.  Doesn't really care about anything else. Is that the majority of fans thoughts? I am curious what other Liverpool fans think.

I think Liverpool are a special case.  If this were Man City(or ManU or Chelsea) in that position I could see trying an all out assault for the historic treble, but this is Liverpool.  They've never won the EPL.  That HAS to be their main focus and I can't imagine any Pool fan thinking differently right now.

I realize the EPL title is far and away the most important thing.  13 points up with a game in hand (vs West Ham?).  That's 5 games they have to lose at least. And have only lost 1 in a 1.5 years....

Do fans want them to sacrifice the FA Cup or CL?  Even as a ManU fan, would be hard to argue against them as the best team ever if they get the treble.  Their EPL run is historic.

True.  I can't see them sitting their starters for EPL games though.  That just invites trouble.  So, do they play their starters every game and damn the consequences?  Or do they focus on EPL and CL and let their rotation try and win them the FA?  I'd bet on the latter and then their starters taking over that competition if they make the semis, which is entirely possible with that team right now.

That was some of the discussion this morning too.  Everton this weekend in the FA Cup.  Do they go with the youth and bow out in the derby? Or may sneak a win?  Without the FA Cup they then get rest during midweek games on cup weeks.

I can only speak for myself, but it's all about the league title. It's been 30 years, but it's more than that. It's how that era ended, with Hillsborough, the Thatcher years, financial difficulties, followed by years of trying to rebuild the city, all the issues surrounding Hicks and Gillett, owl face Hodgson, being close to going into administration, the continued Hillsborough inquests, lack of justice... I don't expect anyone here to understand or even know the history or why it transpired, but as far as I know, most older fans only care about the league.

I'm not really interested in talking about trebles, or doubles, especially with the injury situation what it is. I think we have 13 senior players fit at the moment, so rotation is out of the question, unless we start bringing kids in. I expect us to be forced to rotate in kids for the FA cup tie, and expect Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, Hoever, Chiravella, Neco Williams, maybe Nate Phillips and van der Berg to all be part of the squad on Sunday. Getting Minamino in to add depth will definitely help, but I don't expect him to be purring this early, only having trained 3-4 times.

We need 13 wins in the remaining 18 to guarantee the title, and that's no easy feat:

January:
Tottenham (a)
Manchester United (h)
Wolverhampton (a)
West Ham (a)

February:
Southampton (h)
Norwich City (a)
West Ham (h)
Watford (a)

March:
Bournemouth (h)
Everton (a)
Crystal Palace (h)

April:
Manchester City (a)
Aston Villa (h)
Brighton (a)
Burnley (h)

May:
Arsenal (a)
Chelsea (h)
Newcastle (a)

I don't think they have a choice but to go with a youthful team, considering the amount of injuries, and the heavy December schedule. I expect us to beat the Ev with a heavy youth team though, maybe 50/50 senior squad and youth team.

We need 13 wins (39pts) in the remaining 18 to guarantee the title, and that's no easy feat:

January:
Tottenham (a)
Manchester United (h)
Wolverhampton (a)
West Ham (a)

February:
Southampton (h)
Norwich City (a)
West Ham (h)
Watford (a)

March:
Bournemouth (h)
Everton (a)
Crystal Palace (h)

April:
Manchester City (a)
Aston Villa (h)
Brighton (a)
Burnley (h)

May:
Arsenal (a)
Chelsea (h)
Newcastle (a)
I am hoping for:

January: 8 pts
February: 12 pts
March: 7 pts
April: 7 pts
May: 5 pts

That's 39 pts, and would be enough, but I can see a lot less than that. City are good enough to go on a 17 game winning streak.

@charvik

Thanks for the response.  I am guessing the majority of older fans feel that way.  I have a few LP fans and the EPL title is everything.  Didn't realize the injuries were mounting either.

Yeah, the narrative from the talking heads is that only City in the PL are hit by injuries...

Yeah, it's so annoying. United should be well younger I would think.
Had this discussion with someone.  They all had a couple years experience so they are no longer considered youth.  What they should be saying is inexperienced vs experienced not young.

When the season started Rashford and Martial were 21 & 23.  AWB 21, McT 22, Andres 23, James 21, Shaw 23....  Add Greenwood at 17, Tuanzbee 21, Lindelof 24.... That's young nut experienced.
