Incredible movement on the shot too.  The keeper stepped in one direction and it ended up in the corner of the other.
Normally you would expect to see the keeper made a horrible play on a goal of that distance but with that movement I'm not sure there's a whole lot he could have done except not move until it got closer.  Crazy.

Looks like he was blocked a little and/or not expecting it when the shot is hit for microsecond...then a step in the wrong direction before trying to get there. He wasn't even that far off his line.

Just a stunning strike.

Miguel Almiron just can't stop scoring!!!

Also Ibra doing Ibra things. First Milan Start in over 8 yrs scores on 38yrs and 100days

Finally yesterday Union broke their transfer record

MLS

Official: Philadelphia buy Jamiro Monteiro from Metz - New Record Arrival

The Philadelphia Union have signed midfielder Jamiro Monteiro on a permanent deal from FC Metz, the club confirmed on Friday.

According to a report by the Philadelphia Inquirer—written by well-informed journalist Jonathan Tannenwald—the Union will pay in the region of $2 million, plus bonuses, for the striker.

Market Value

$2.17m

It is a record deal for the Philadelphia-based Major League Soccer club. The Union's previous record signing is David Accam, who arrived from the Chicago Fire in a deal that cost the club $300,000 General Allocation Money and $900,000 in Targeted Allocation Money.

The 26-year-old Monteiro had a good season with the Union last season, scoring four goals and seven assists in 26 games. The 26-year-old native of Rotterdam is also a Cape Verde national team player (five caps).

After joining the Union in January 2019 on loan from French side FC Metz, Monteiro managed to increase his market value from $2 million to $2.17 million. Monteiro led the team in pass completion (87.6%), assists and tackles per game (2.8).

The 26-year-old loan to the Union expired at the end of December. The midfielder is expected to sign a Designated Player contract in Philadelphia.

I was convinced Jamiro Monteiro was gone.

A lot of you were convinced Jamiro Monteiro was gone.

Well, he isn’t gone.

Lol about almiron.

But good for him for getting some stats- solid player.
He's been an engine all year, just couldn't score. And sometimes he'd be so unlucky you just couldn't help but feel for him. I'm not sure anything makes Newcastle fans happier than watching him find the back of the net, he's like their little brother.

Guys been great since heading over...no doubt (other than his continued easy flops which may be a little better this season). And as an MLS dude playing for a us laden team, makes me happy to see his successes.

His flops were cartoonish. He seems to have decided to knock it off for a while now, though. But yeah, I think he got 2-3 yellows early on and he deserved them.

Leave or to Barça to sack the manager while at the top of the table because they weren't winning with enough style.
Long overdue.  The team plays uninspired and is bailed out by Messi a ridulous amount.  Now Suarez is out 4 months.  A change is needed

Not one of the top of table teams in La Liga look great this year IMO

FWIW, Liverpool, City and Bayern have supplanted the Spanish teams in 538's ratings.

Liverpool, City, Bayern; then Real, PSG, Barca; then Leipzig, Atletico, Chelsea, Juve -- three distinct tiers today.

Feels right.  Seems like Liverpool should be a step above all else right now.  CL knockouts are about to start though, that is when we really start to find out about these teams.

Just scored again to put Newcastle up 3-0 over Rochdale in the FA Cup replay. You can't stop Miguel Almiron - you can only hope to contain him.
I know Newcastle want Piatek want to Swap players. My Favorite Italian club needs a playmaking MF to feed King Ibra and Leao the ball. My favorite English Club needs a striker. I think it's a fair swap....

Should be fun in LA next season with Vela on LAFC and Chicharito on the Galaxy.  MLS teams have been trying to sign him for like three years now.  The Galaxy must have really opened the wallets up.

ESPN in Mexico says it should be official on Wednesday.

I can't really argue with those rankings.  Maybe putting 'pool in a class by themselves is warranted.

hopefully most of you remember hakan sukur? turkey's all-time leading league and country scorer- played in england as well. I remember when that alleged coup happened in turkey a few years back, he was implicated somehow. story from the bbc about him now... crazy stuff (including ozil's best man).

Hakan Sukur is Turkey's greatest ever goalscorer and once one of Europe's most prolific strikers. A legend.

So, how did he end up driving taxis and selling books for a living in the US, in exile from his home country?

According to an interview with German newspaper, Welt am Sonntag, the 48-year-old former striker's life has taken an unusual and troubling turn since retiring from football in 2008.

He claims that a rift with the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has exposed him to death threats, false accusations and lack of access to funds.

'I have nothing left, Erdogan took everything: my right to liberty, freedom of expression and right to work," he told the paper.

Sukur scored 51 goals in 112 appearances for Turkey between 1992 and 2007. He was part of the Turkish side that finished third at the 2002 World Cup.

The former Blackburn player spent the majority of his career at Galatasaray and is the all-time leading goalscorer in the Super Lig - the Turkish top flight.

Sukur scored what is still the fastest ever World Cup goal, just 11 seconds after kick-off against South Korea in 2002

After retiring from football, he went into politics. In 2011, Sukur won a seat in Turkey's Parliament as a member of Erdogan's Justice and Development Party .

But he was also tied to Fethullah Gulen, a Turkish Islamic scholar and rival of Erdogan, whom the Turkish President blamed for a bloody attempted coup in 2016.

Sukur, by then living in the US, reportedly denounced the attempted coup, but was nonetheless, in 2017, described by Turkish-run state media as a "fugitive member of the Fetullah Terrorist Organisation (FETO)".

That report describes him living in a $3m house, running a cafe at Palo Alto, "the richest area of San Francisco Bay Area".

Sukur tells a less fun-sounding story.

"I moved to the United States, initially running a cafe in California, but strange people kept coming into the bar," he told Welt am Sonntag. "Now I drive for Uber and I sell books."

He has said that his houses, businesses and bank accounts in Turkey had all been seized by Erdogan's government.

He also denies any crimes.

"Nobody seems able to explain what my role in this coup was supposed to be," he added. "I never did anything illegal, I am not a traitor or a terrorist."

This is not the first time he's spoken on the subject. In 2018 he told the New York Times: "It's my country; I love my people, even though their ideas about me are distorted by controlled media."

The story throws up more questions about Erdogan's government. In 2018, Mesut Ozil attracted criticism after posing for a picture with the Turkish President, including from the German Football Federation (DFB), which said "football and the DFB defend values which are not sufficiently respected by Mr Erdogan".

Erdogan was subsequently best man at Ozil's wedding.

One year since Lalas and Garber came to town and I got super drunk and woke up in an Austin FC shirt that I didn’t own when the day began. Still not sure where or how I got it.

We are interviewing Lalas on our podcast today. He really will talk to anyone.

The Turkish government are absolutely horrible people. Turkey won't even admit or acknowledge the Arminian Genocide and when Erdogan was here a year or so ago his security force beat the living crap out of protestors against Erdogan. The only reason US doesn't do a regime coup is Erdogan despite how awful he is (He's way worse then Assad yet the US makes Erdogan look like an Angel by comparison) is because E plays ball with the US and Assad doesn't anymore. Further on this Ernst Kanter the Turkish Center is viewed a fugitive in Turkey for simple speaking out against the Government. Dude can't even go to an away trip to Canada in Toronto with his teams because he could be deported back to Turkey and put in Prison for life or executed. Dude whenever he changes cities has a whole security team and has to inform the FBI HQ in that city where he is and his wear abouts. The Turkish government is known for illegal attempt to deport who they deal fugitives in safe Countries and nothing is off the table from kidnapping family members to the person themselves.

This story is crazy but leave it to the Turkish government to make up BS on people who they deem is a threat to their government and Erdogan. One of the reasons I know so much about the Armenian Genocide is thanks to family on my dad's side. His Aunt is Armenian and I've learned so much from her side of the family from my two cousins who are half Armenian and Half Italian.

Sounds like you'd fit in with my one cousin. He went to London since our Other cousin was on a business trip with him (Took him for his birthday gift early gift) and they ended up in Barcelona. My one Cousin's nephew was there too as he was studying abroad in Barcelona. Long story short they went to a club in Barca and my one cousin passed out on a bench outside the club. He was missing his phone the next morning doesn't remember how he got to the bench or how he got separated from my other cousin and his nephew.

We also lost a guy during the celebration. Found him taking a nap in the alley. “Mike Alert” is now the official term for when someone goes missing.

Giroud to Inter appears official. I like it.

Mexi-Gallardo suspended two games and fined for celebrating with his team's fans singing anti-gay crap. Tweeted the equivalent of "whatever" as response, then deleted it. Happy to see the fed take action, and #### that guy.

Should get a life time ban after that tweet

So it appears that United is now Inter's feeder club

Sanchez....Lukaku....Ashley Young
I remember back when United was Real Madrid's feeder club (Becks, Van Nistelrooy, Ronaldo)... how times have changed.

Sometime players are where they should be.  I am happy Lukaku is doing well.  Just didn't seem to fit the style United was playing.  Sanchez oh what could have been...

And I am happy Young is leaving.  He hasnt been good enough for awhile.  And Williams is showing he can handle it better.

Maybe they will take one more player from United.... (Lingard)

Premier League non-TV matches will be part of NBCs new Peacock streaming service starting next season
Well, I paid for just Premier League Gold so I guess I'll end up getting this because the price point looks basically the same. Maybe less if I get the commercial version assuming they don't cram commercials into the actual match.

Soccer question from a newb....

we're likely in Barcelona in mid-June and thought we'd take in a soccer game. Looks like the season ends in May there though. Correct? But does FC Barcelona play non-Liga games or is there some other great soccer going on there in June? Of course my 10 yo soccer playing son loves Messi so we were hoping to watch him play live.

suggestions welcome.

Barca's last home league game is May 17th.

The last game in the Spanish calendar is the Copa del Rey final in late May.  This is the Spanish equivalent of the FA Cup.

Typically in June is when the teams take a small break before starting preseason travel.   There are usually international games at that time as well so if Messi plays in the Copa America, he probably won't even be in Spain in June.  Argentina is co hosting the Copa this summer so there is a good chance Messi does play if healthy.

crap. that's what I thought. :(

Thanks for the reply.

Sunday! Sunday! Sunday!

One of the biggest rivalries in sports goes at it again. United heads to Anfield for the showdown with Liverpool.  Will Liverpool run riot? Will United pull the upset as they did with City & Tottenham? Or will we get another drab draw?

You are out of luck The Euro's which is the European tournament similar to the World Cup except it only has European teams will be playing. Clubs usually take June off before training camps start in July which is usually when the Summer Transfer window starts. Messi will be most likely in South America for the Copa South America's Tourney equilvant but less popular world wide to the Euro's however they have guest Countries play in this from time to time. You can most likely depending on day and such get you son a tour of Camp Nou Barca's stadium though which is just as good as a game. The US host the International Championship in Late July/Early August that usually has some very solid clubs. Ac Milan is usually in it as the president of the tourney is a big Milan fan but usually one of Barca or Real are in this unless there is a prior obligation and it also depends on when a domestic league starts. I mean everything always comes down to money so if Barca does play near you either in your city or close by that is probably your best chance to catch Messi but fair warning in these matches most clubs don't play the typical starting 11 and if they do play they only play a half. It's essentially their preseason similar to the NFL at that point.
