In the first of probably a 100 financial moves that will effect soccer in America, Banc of California has paid LAFC $20m to break their stadium naming rights deal.  LAFC now needs to find a new sponsor in a market where no one is likely to be spending large marketing dollars.

Woohoo!  Premier League televised schedule on return (all times EST)...

  • Saturday - 7am, 9am, 11am, 1pm, 3pm
  • Sunday -  7am, 9am, 11am, 1pm, 3pm
  • Tuesday - 1pm, 3pm
  • Wednesday - 1pm, 3pm
Sounds like they're shooting for a 6/19 restart.

I keep hearing that it will be pushed to 6/26, but hoping for 6/19. I need sports that matter again.

I have next to no enthusiasm for this at all.... I think Liverpool ruined the season more than corona did.

Looks like quite a few games will be played at neutral grounds, including all of Liverpool's home games.
Have you seen anything about what grounds they are planning to use? I am curious about how they will be shipping these footballers about.

Found this in the article above:

Home and away matches look most likely for the vast majority of games, BBC Sport understands - with a few high-profile games at neutral venues at the request of the police. A number of clubs have expressed their opposition to the concept of using neutral grounds, including Brighton, West Ham and Crystal Palace.
So, it sounds like those 3 grounds won't be used.

I would think they want to stay away from the larger cities, due to higher concentration of potential infected.

At this point, still just planning.  They are obviously concerned over supporters gathering outside big matches, derbies, etc..  Plus everyone knows those lousy Pool fans gonna be running amok thumping their chests, scum

:)

Not sure why they are to be honest. The UK has handled social distancing miles better than the US, with the exception of the Tory MPs. Just sounds like more footballing supporter bias to me, which is still very prevalent in British society.

Similar concerns in Germany have not materialized, but who  knows how the English supporters will react?  It may well be bias against football supporters. Personally, I can see these yahoos showing up outside the venues whether home or at a neutral site.  Before the shut-down, when there was talk of playing champions league games in empty stadiums, I know many British fans were claiming they would still travel to the away games and do their normal away game stuff outside the venue.  Hard do say if they really would have, but that was the common online sentiment.

That and their first title in 30 years may be why they are avoiding Anfield.  Yes its probably a letdown at this point, but it wouldnt surprise me if they did get out to celebrate.

I'm sure there will be some blerts going around, like always. I saw idiots driving to the beach on Memorial Day, because apparently we are safe now. Not to mention churches are going to open because, you know, Jesus prevents the virus. Or looting a Target because a 49" flat screen keeps the Corona away.

ETA: I listen to a LOT of local radio, and they all say the same thing. Flags in the windows, pyro in the backyard, but nobody is going out in the streets.

ETA2: Latest UK restrictions are groups up to 6 if members of different households, keep 2 meter distance. Lots of backyard TVs being set up for mates.

Note: Long post lost in "Bad Gateway" error - neat. Not going to re-write it all.

Tomorrow marks 35 years since Heysel, something that tends to be forgotten and pushed under the carpet. There is plenty of blame to go around, but that has played out in the courts.

I was 14, mad at my father for not taking me to see the reds in a final I really wanted to go to. The match was televised, and all played out in front of us, live, in color, and utterly confusing. 39 fellow football fans perished on those terraces, or after succumbing to injuries sustained. I have since read a lot, court reports, eyewitness accounts, articles, columns, watched way too much coverage from all over Europe. It was a preventable tragedy in itself, and a tragedy that repeated itself on April 15th 1989.

In Heysel, thirty nine people — 32 from Italy, four from Belgium, two from France, one from Northern Ireland, the youngest 11 years old — died.

Six hundred more were injured.

May 29, 1985 will be a date never forgotten in the city of Liverpool and among Liverpool fans. Nor should it be. The 39 people who died at Heysel will always be remembered:

Rocco Acerra (29)
Bruno Balli (50)
Alfons Bos (35)
Giancarlo Bruschera (21)
Andrea Casula (11)
Giovanni Casula (44)

Rest In Peace.

@LauraScott__: While it will remain under review, PL fixtures moving to neutral venues, at the request of forces, are:
-  Man City v Liverpool; Man City v Newcastle; Man Utd v Sheffield Utd
- Newcastle v Liverpool
- Everton v Liverpool + the game in which Liverpool could secure the league title

I get the Liverpool choices, to an extent, as I noted above.  But the others?

Other then the battle for 5th and a potential CL spot (or even 4th if Chelsea faulters), not sure why neutral grounds for United v Sheffield?
Also not sure why City vs Newcastle would need one too?

Typically they wouldn't schedule City and United at home on the same day, but maybe that's why?

It's a north v south of England thing, been going on for 50+ years.

Yup, good point. We could probably add 200 pages to this thread going into all the nuances and details, but not sure I have it in me. Lots of tribalism, lots of Thatcher-isms, lots of Tory v Labour etc etc etc...
no need, we know it all ends with a let down... in so many ways

Isn't this all due to local police concerned about home supporters gathering outside the stadium?  I don't think it has anything to do with how competitive the games are.  Manchester police don't want to deal with United or City home games it seems.

That's part of it. Mayor Joe Bitter BlueNose didn't help either.

Supposedly.  But why only those teams?  And City doesn't have any fans....

This kid that got his debut for Bayern today, Batista-Maier, is 19 and can still play for either Brazil or Germany on the national stage.  If he develops to that level.

That’s a hell of a choice. I’ve seen players with the choice between smaller countries and a power, but between those two ... wow.

Just saw statements from Merseyside and Greater Manchester police that they had zero concerns with playing all games on home grounds.

Only happens to Spurs:

"Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy has informed José Mourinho he will need to sell players to fund a move for free agent Willian."

:bag:
